Here's a question that I thought would
make for a good discussion where I've never seen much written about
it. How do you use the depth-of-field preview button on Canon's
DSLR's? I've owned a Rebel XT, 20D, 30D, 40D, and now the 5D2 where I've known
about the little button but I just don't understand how to use it
correctly. Is it worth using and will it really give you an accurate
view of the depth of field?

Here's the Story. Around Christmas this year I will have about 5K to spend on equipment. I shoot a lot of sports, I mean a lot. I had an older 300 f2.8 non IS that I purchased and focus was not great so I sent it back but noticed that a single focal length lens is limited compared to my 70-200mm zoom. Another difficulty is that a lot of sports are at night and I frequently (read always) shoot at f2.8 and 3200 iso for a 1/400 shutter speed which is frequently underexposed by up to 2 fstops depending on the field or gym. I currently have the aforementioned 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM lens so 80% of my needs are met. I have a 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM lens and a 50mm f1.4 lens; I have a 40D, 1D, 1D Mark 2n. So my problem is this, It would be photography dogma to upgrade the Lens with an Uber Telephoto as mentioned above and with the $500 rebate the 200mm is only $4800 dollars until January but High ISO is my bane. I would love to have another 2fstops of light with the same noise performance and with 16mpix on a 1.3 sensor and easily 12,800 iso on the Mark IV I'm thinking upgrading the camera body may be more beneficial than getting a Faster telephoto (though I would like to have both).

What should I get. 1) 1D mark IV 2) 300mm f2.8 with 2x extender (already have 1.4x) 3) 200mm f2.0

5D MarkII

As I wrote in my profile until now I only used Nikon DSLRs in the past. Therefore I don´t have any experience with Canon SLRs. I bought a 5DMarkII which is still in the box. I only will open it on christmas. But I study the manual (downloaded from the internet - see below), and I have a few questions, which I almost don´t dare to pose to you the experienced users.

1.) The camera only can take images when the AF has achieved focus although you press the shutter button straight down.and/or If you aim a subject and press the shutter button directly straight down without waitung until the camera has achieved focus the camera will not take a picture. And when you shoot continuously and the camera loses the subject, it stops even when C.FnIII-1 is set to (0) -search on. Is that right?

2.) As I like to take snapshots I like always to be prepared for. Therefore I should like to set the settings as follows most of the time: Drive Mode - continuous shooting / AF AI focus (I don´t talk about metering and ISO speed) Are there reasons why I shouldn´t do that. Can this setting be set as one the C1/C2/C3 ? That would be very conviened because I could switch to One shot or another C(2-3) setting immediately

3. The 5DMark II features 3 different levels of RAW files. RAW files can be processed lossless. But my question is: If I use RAW 2 the file is not larger than Jpeg S in terms of the printing size. Why use this compression as well as RAW 1. If bought a FF Camera and using the compressed Raw files I cut if down to APS-C. Is that right, or do I make a mistake?

I think about capturing JPEG and RAW of the same picture. The advantage of a RAW is obvious. Nevertheless I will capture JPEGs because most or the majority of the images must not be changed. But for those which have to be processed, I will use the RAW file, convert to JPEG and then throw the RAW file to the trash. What do you think about that?

4. This has nothing to do with the camera itself: What is your experience in terms of sRGB vs RGB. Until today I only used sRGB. Most of my pictures are displayed on my monitor which doesn´t cover RGB. I did test photos and printed them (Epson Stylus R2400 - I don´t know if this model is sold in the US; the color management of this printer supports RGB) Compared with the sRGB Photos of the same subject, the RGB photos were significantly more colorful, i.e. the color saturation was better. Your experiences?

So it´s enough for now. Thank you in advance for you answers.

PS: You should be glad to live in the US because the information about Digital photography is much better than in Germany.

Canon EOS 450D Lenses

Hello,

I am new to the photography field, and very much interested in this field, As a beginner, Recently I brought Canon EOS 450D + 18-55 IS lens ,and I liked it very much.

Now I am thinking of upgrading the lens to a professional one. (and would like to keep my 450D)

Could you please share your experience ..

I am interested in

1. General photography

2. Landscapes/Nature/flowers

3. Family photos

After reviewing many websites and forums, I stuck with 2 lenses( Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM and Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM Lens)

From experienced reviews , I think 24-70 is more professional one but I am concerned about few things

1. 24-70

1a. Does it suits my EOS 450D?

1c. As this is heavy, does it damage my 450D ?

2. 17-55

2a. Does it suits my EOS 450D?

2b. Heard that this is dust catching one

Could you please share your experience and suggest good professional lens for my EOS 450D

Thanks in advance

I'm planning to go FF (coming from a 50D) and hesitating between 1D mk III and 5D Mk II.

As I plan to make some sport shots, the 5D II seems too slow (is it ... really ?) but the 1D III seems to have these AF problems. It makes too much "seems" for this prices tag. So :

Regardless of the price (it'a mid term buy), weight, etc.

1. Are AF problems really bugging 1D III. Is it solved by new firmware ?

2. I've also read that 5D II could have more fps on latest firmware. Is that true ?

What are your experiences with these cams ?

I majored in Fine Art Photography and mostly shot with 8x10 view cameras. Now, not only is Canon improving their TS-E lenses' functionality, but digital image quality and pixel count in DSLR-sized sensors are rapidly heading for a realm higher than most photojournalists, event, or portrait photographers even care about. This is fine art territory!

The second feature a starving artists needs, after big, beautiful image quality, is low cost. I don't think these two features have to be at odds with each other. How cheaply could a body be sold with a top quality, 30+MP sensor and all the functionality of a wood field camera minus the movements (essentially a box)?

I'm used to tripods, so it doesn't need high ISO settings. I take care of my equipment, so it doesn't need to be rugged. I'm used to carrying a big camera, several film holders, spot meter, etc., so it doesn't need to be lightweight or compact. View camera "burst rate" would be measured in sheets per MINUTE, so it doesn't need to be fast. View cameras don't have any in-camera metering. TS-E lenses cannot use autofocus. Fine art workflows don't require JPEG engines, wireless file transfers, etc. View cameras cannot shoot video--I'm a still photographer after all! View cameras don't have microphones or record EXIF data--we just write notes. Etc., etc. . .

If I could ask for a couple of special things, they would be a 24x30mm sensor (matches traditional proportions, and allows for greater tilt/shift movements without falloff)--perhaps rotatable 90 degrees like a view camera's ground glass; and a 4x5" zoomable liveview LCD for composition (upside-down and backwards, of course!). I'll give up the pentaprism (I know this is an SLR forum) and I don't care if I have to hunker under a dark cloth to see the LCD.

If cutting out all these unnecessary features significantly cuts the cost of a body with a top-level sensor, I would gladly accept the sacrifices and drop some money on the TS-E lenses. Am I alone in this? What percentage of a body's cost is the sensor? Which is more profitable for Canon--bodies or lenses?

Canon 40D blurry images

I received my 40D back from Canon service center hoping they can fix the soft or blurry images I've been experiencing. They did a firmware upgrade and some "tweaking" but the images don't look any better. Anyone else having problems with this camera? I'm using the EF 70-200 f2.8 L IS USM lens. One thing I did notice, the images, if I focus at 70mm, look noticibly worse than if I focus at 200mm then zoom down to 70mm, while still holding the button half-way down, then snap the picture. Do I need to always focus at 200mm then recompose my picture like this everytime? I've tried using the tripod w/o the IS enabled. It's not a camera shake issue. I can see exactly what I focused on but it doesn't look sharp.

So I'm debating trading my 40D for a T1i. I know the 40D is faster for sports (which I don't shoot very often), and I know the T1i has higher MP's and the better screen. What else should I take into consideration?

How about noise levels in high ISO performance?

Another thing I'm factoring in is large printing, since I just came across an opportunity to make some money off large prints, the better quality the large prints are, the better.

One last thing, if I was to make this trade, which camera (body to body) is worth more used?

(See if I'm making sense!)

I have been dreaming about a FF 1D mark IV camera ever since it was
in the rumors, but it turned out to be a "minor" update to the 1D III,
similar to the 50D to 40D upgrade. Nevertheless, now I begin to think if
a possible 1Dv camera will finally bring us the longtime awaited
revolution. So let's discuss if such a camera can be designed.

See, now Canon has two 1-series bodies in their Lineup. Some
people say it's redundant to do so since Canon can very possibly
combine these two cameras into one while maintain the utility of two.
To build upon that, I wonder if the following is doable from an
engineering point of view.

To make a FF camera that has a very
high resolution (say 32mp) just like the resolution that the possible
1Ds IV will obtain. Make the camera capable of shooting at full
resolution at a low frame rate (say 5fps) to maintain its utility
equivalent to an 1Ds camera - this is not something new to do. Now,
let's also use the same FF sensor without cropping, reduce the image
output to a lower resolution (say 16mp, just like to shoot lower rez
images on your camera by adjusting image size) and increase the frame
rate to 10FPS to simulate the performance of a "FF" 1D IV - I wonder how
hard this can be.

The current processors have proven to be fast
enough to handle the data at this resolution and speed above. The idea
of the movie mode of a FF DSLR (5D II) is to use the same FF sensor
(without cropping) to achieve 24FPS or more at a much lower resolution
compared to its native resolution. So can we use what we currently know
how to do to make a camera that is both a FF high rez camera at low
speed and a FF high speed camera at low rez? If so, i guess the merging
of the 1-series bodies will make sense.

Ben

PS: Daniel, help!... =)

40D Shutter Release Button Not Working

I experience a phenomenon where my 40D's shutter release button does not work properly. This post explains the reason why that is not possible. It essentially comes down to the fact that it would require the optical viewfinder to be removed.

This diagram by Joseph S. Wisniewski (reproduced here with explicit permission) illustrates the reason:

The main mirror directs most of the light up to the optical viewfinder. There is a small portion in the center that is partially transparent. It lets some light through to a small, secondary mirror directly behind the primary mirror. The secondary mirror reflects light to the autofocus system. As you can see from the diagram, it is physically impossible to make the secondary mirror any bigger.

On the other hand, if the optical viewfinder was replaced by an electronic viewfinder, then the entire mirror could be partially transparent and reflect light into the PD autofocus system, and the AF sensors could be anywhere on the frame. I hope that such a design will occur soon.

" the 5D mk ii focuses slower" what does this mean??

I've read somehwere that the 5D mkII focuses slower than other camera bodies by Canon.

I nee help deciding whether to buy a new camera body or buy a good lens and just keep my "old body"???

I currently use a Canon Xti with a 24-70 f2.8 L lens. I am an enthusiast though I only shoot photos occasionally. I am quite satisfied with my pictures right now.

I am currently thinking of upgrading my camera body to a 5d mkii. But taking into account that I just take photos occasionally would it not be "overkill" for me to upgrade to such a camera body?? This is my only choice coz I've decided a while ago that when I do decide to upgrade, it will be to a full frame body.

My alternative if I don't get the new body is to get me the 70-200 f2.8L IS lens.

What do you guys think?? considering that I am an enthuisiast who only shoots occasionally, do I go for the 5d mkii or do i just keep my XTi and get the 70-200 lens???

ISO noise rebel series vs d series

Just looking for some opinions on ISO noise difference between the rebel series and the d series (ie 40d-50d).

My question is: which camera is the best in image quality (please don't include the fact weather sealing, battery grip and these stuff). Can you rate them with a max score the 10 for me please?

I am an owner of a 50D at the moment, and my first model before the 50D, was the 400D.

50D is a good camera, but just this, 'good'. not excellent. the 15Mp and the high ISO don't do much about the quality. i am a wildlife photographer (not pro), but i want to take the best output from my camera, without much interfering by Photoshop and other things. I can't take good photos with ISO higher than 400, even in good light conditions. Above that, noise becomes quite apparent.

i 've seen images from a 5D2. i was impressed..So clear and no noise at all (my friend was using it with a Canon EF 500 f/4 IS, which is sure much better than my 100-400), but this body really delivers great images! when i compare it with my 50D. The only disadvantage this camera has is the fact that is full frame, which will make me to get very close to my subject, but..i can make more croping than with the 50D and still get better images i suppose..the fact it has 3,9 fps don't bothers me much.

Now, the 1D Mark 3 is very complicated case..i mean it has the stunning 10 fps which you can use in many cases, and a better AF system, but how much better image quality it produces compared with 50D, and with 5D2. It is overpriced for me i think,it is 2 years old model now and also i believe soon Canon will release the new model, which will be more Mp (quite important for me, because if this camera was at least 12Mp i would think more for it), and even better in high ISO performance. An important think for me this camera has is the 1,3x sensor, which is better than the full frame in the final focal length.

As for 7D, i really doubt about being much better than the 50D, it has an improved AF system ok, and the 8fps, but if it's not much better in image quality and ISO performance, i think me as an owner of the 50D, it does not worth to spend money for little improvement (i don't care about the video stuff it has).

So, because soon i will have the 400L f/5,6 USM of Canon (which is better than the 100-400), please help me which model is the best for my update, because i will spend money and i want to keep it for at least 3-4 years. Should i wait for the 1D Mark 4?

Aaarghhh - a dead pixel on a 5D MK II

Well, it had to happen. I found a dead pixel on my new (3 days old) 5D MK II. It's worse as shutter speeds get below 1/15th second, and visible as a green dot in RAW images and a white dot when converted to JPEG or TIFF.

I _really_ don't want to go through the process of exchanging the camera if I can avoid it (and it doesn't help that the camera is in an almost constant state of backorder at B&H).

In searching these forums, I saw mention of a procedure called "dead pixel remapping", but there was no mention of how to do it. I looked in my manual and found no mention of this procedure.

Can anybody tell me how to do this dead pixel remap on a 5D MK II? Will this essentially cure the problem?

How do other people here feel about returning the camera verses the alternative?

Thanks in advance.

T1i Noise Reduction doesn't really turn off.

I've noticed that when you open a raw image in DPP there is always a bit of NR applied, which goes up depending on the ISO. This is fine, you can turn it off and move on your merry way. The problem is that the same image opened in ACR would seem to be applying the NR at the same levels too, but in ACR you can't turn it off. On another forum I asked about this and someone said that it was actually just ACR applying it's own level of noise reduction and nothing could be done...but comparing images side by side from DPP and ACR, it looks the same, and my conclusion is that ACR can actually detect the level of NR on the shot and act accordingly, albiet in the background, and it cannot be changed.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone has dealt with this, knows a possible work around. I love using ACR because of all the awesome editing features, but I want to be working from the cleanest image possible to start. I sure hope that Adobe figures this out, or that maybe I'm missing something with the camera settings (I'm not, all possible NR anything is disabled).

Which one 7D or 5D MKII

Currently I use a 450D with a host of lenses ranging from Canon EFS to L series with some Tamrons. Very happy with 450D but like to have the video option + gain some pixels for photos.

Following are a few images to try to explain. These are 100% crops. When I open a raw image in DPP, I see a very clear 2x2 pixels that are a few different shades of deep red, but saving images to either jpg or tif of course show affects of resampling, aliasing or whatever.

The first image is a 100% crop from an out of focus background. The second is from a completely under-exposed shot (completely black). I don't think either of these really capture the essence of the problem, but it is the best I could come up with. It is really annoying, the spot inevitably showing up right in someone's dark hair, etc. It happens to be in the upper intersection of 1/3 points, right where I'm always trying to place the subject.

A recent rumor suggests that Canon can't deviate from the current 1-series "standard" of 45 autofocus points (and therefore the lower series must have a focus point layout that aligns with some of the 1-series 45-point layout) because of the Speedlite AF-assist lamp pattern.

I'm thinking through this, and something doesn't seem right: as far as I know, the AF-assist lamp doesn't zoom. Therefore, the pattern would appear very tightly in the center of the frame with wide-angle lenses, and/or widely outside the frame with super-telephoto lenses. If that's the case, why would the design/layout of the AF-assist lamp matter to the focus point count? There'd be no guarantee that a line or junction would fall beneath any particular focus point now.

5D vs. 5D Mark II

Since I re-caught the photography bug (I took a hiatus during and shortly after college because I was too poor to pay for film processing!) I have dreamed of owning a 35mm digital SLR. I have gone from P&S to Rebel to XXD and eventually a 5D.

I currently shoot with a 50D which I think is terrific, but I seriously crave the shallow DoF, low light capability and increased dynamic range that full-frame offers. I love all types of photography but my passions are candid portraiture and landscapes.

*1st side note: I do not plan on selling my 50D to help finance this purchase. I will keep it as a backup and for both macro and telephoto work.

Now for the reality: I have only saved $500 for this eventual purchase thus far so even though I am serious about this, it's not happening in 2009. I am hoping it happens in 2010 though I usually get a couple of Adorama or B&H gift cards at Christmas and there's always a chance that I will get a bonus at work in January, which now gets split 3 ways (me, wife, college fund for kid).

I'm looking for opinions, suggestions, personal experiences, whatever. The question is: Do I buy a 5D sooner or a 5D Mark II later? I now realize that the title of this thread is a little misleading because I am not really looking to hear why the Mark II is better or what makes them different. I would rather have the Mark II and if I had the money I wouldn't be typing right now What I am considering is buying the 5D Mark I (currently is going for $1,399.95 Refurbished at B&H) and using it until I could afford to sell it and upgrade to the Mark II. I figure in the time it would take me to save an additional $1,000 (the 5D Mark II is currently going for $2,399.95 Refurbished at Adorama) I could be taking tons of pictures with the Mark I. Say I keep the Mark I for a year or so and sell it for $1,000 then I "rented" it for $400 for the year which sounds pretty darn good to me. What do you think???

**2nd side note: I am open to buying either the Mark I or the Mark II used. I'm sure I could pick up the Mark I for $1,000 - $1,200 but I would be happy to pay a couple extra hundred dollars for a factory refurbished model. I haven't seen any good deals on used Mark II's (I guess no one wants to sell one!!!)

Maybe the mega-bank that I work for will reward me for all of the extra effort I put forth this year and I'll have more than enough to just spring for the Mark II right away! Your comments will not be written in vain though for I'm sure that others must have considered this too

[Please visit the site to access the poll]

Lint in the viewer

I've got a 5D mark II that is about six months old. For about a month now I've noticed what looks to be a huge piece of lint or other obstruction in the viewer. It's not showing up on the images, so it's NOT on the sensor.

I've removed the lens to eliminate that. I cleaned the outside of the viewer, (the part you look through), the piece with the focus targeting and the mirror. I even flipped the mirror halfway to get in between the two reflective surfaces... No Luck.

Has anybody ever had an issue like this? Like I said, it's not affecting the images, but it sure is annoying to see the obstruction in the viewer.

Annie Leibovitz is shooting Canon again

I saw her shooting Nikon in the Profoto thing a while ago but the recent Vogue cover she is definitely shooting Canon.
Also, ISO 12233 sample crops from the 1D III have been added to the Canon EF 200mm f/2 L IS USM Lens Review.
just take a look at these and ill explain the rest under

(the first two are on a Rebel T1i)

this is about a 160% crop

this is around 200%. you can really see those dots im really annoyed of

now, swtiching to a REBEL XS, this is a 160% crop

this is like what, 400% crop??? look at the amount of white dots... barely any

anyways... liek i said, the first two are from my T1i the last two are from my previously owned rebel XS.

i know those little white dots are not noise. the first two (T1i) are shot at ISO 800

the last two (XS) are shot at ISO 1600

they do get more apparent when i raise the ISO. even at 100 ISO, they are somewhat visible when cropped or zoomed in. introducing motion blur doesnt mask them either, so its not any external factors.

(this is ISO 100, a 400% crop. they are a little visible, hand held this at 0.8 secs, so some blur was imminent)

this is particularly annoying because when i try to sharpen a photo with those white pixels, they disrupt the image by becoming more visible, also it makes it look like it has a grain look, but the fugly looking grain. worse is, i use iso 1600 constantly, and many of my pictures are affected by this.

already emailing canon about this. this is so weird, i think it might just be the sensor.

anyone else has this problem? any insights? thank you!

EOS-1D Mark IV

It's on the Canon main website.....

EOS 5D Mark II firmware udate - Online petition

There's a Dutch photographer who made an online petition to Mr. Masaya Maeda of Canon Inc., in order to have a couple of really nice features implemented via firmware update in the EOS 5D Mark II, namely the ability to select a minimum shutter speed in Auto ISO and to select both lower and upper limits for Auto ISO.

Since Canon has announced that a firmware update to the EOS 5D Mark II is currently under development to enable the recording of high definition 1080p video at 24 and 25fps following feedback received from videographers, why not encourage the Company to satisfy also the wish of photographers?

The petition is online at http://www.petitiononline.com/Canon5D/petition.html

Actually, I'm a bit doubtful concerning the effectiveness of such petitions, but I remember I signed a similar one in the past months to have manual exposure control in video mode in the 5DII, which now we have. So why not try this, it takes just a few seconds.

Any thoughts and feedback are welcome, also to keep this post up in the list to have it noticed by as many of our Community as possible. I really would like to have such nice features with the next firmware... Thanks to all!
