Easy - shop at a reputable store. B&H, Adorama, MPEX, etc etc. If the price is too good to be true, it probably is.

I agree, like no. 2 but the others need some more light. Maybe some curves could help ;) Though the sunset suggestion is a good idea also :)
The Lumiquest FXtra does NOT fit the 580EXII comfortably, it's a bit of a reach. I have one and never use it. It's also somewhat flimsy and the gel holder on my separated from the storage part...

I agree about the center crop.... I actually like the stuff flying by up top, the green is kinda muddy (go figure). I personally think the the airport "scenery" is less distracting than the crop, but...

I'm guessing the black metal sheet is a piece of CineFoil? Which you can use for barn doors, a snoot or a gobo (or if you want to slice up your fingers, origami :P)
It's a bit of cash to spend but the Singh-Ray Vari-ND Filter's the way to go :) Of course then you can only use it on certain lenses that have specific filter sizes...
