• Re: Depth-of-field preview button
I've seen the strobe effect before but I did not know how to activate that feature. Where would one use this strobe effect?
I find it incredibly useful when doing remote flash setups, particularly with multiple flashes. It allows me to visualize where light and shadows will fall, and fix issues before

  • Re: Canon EOS 1D Mark IV vs. 300mm f2.8 vs. 200mm f2.0
Please excuse me. I didn´t see that you listed up your cameras. But that doesn´t influence my statement: I would buy the 1DMarkIV. This is likely the biggest investments. A lenses can be afforded easier.
The two lenses listed in the subject of this discussion are in the same price category

  • Re: Finally got the moon and two energetic dogs

Nice work! Consider motion blur for the dog shots - I often have to remind myself to consider this. I like stop-action for sports, but I find that a mix of blur helps show the action of the event, and I suspect the same can apply here. I normally default to 1/60th, except for prop/rotor aircraft where I default to 1/125th. And, if you're in a spot

  • Re: Bare flash still looks a little harsh...How can I make it look better? [Light Modifiers]

One of the toughest concepts I've had to learn was HOW to use gels to match/complement ambient light. After a lot of trial and error, I've finally realized the magic: it's two parts. Part 1: Correct for color temperature, i.e. the red/blue shift. I use a gray card in Kelvin white balance, and tweak the Kelvin value until red and blue are

  • Re: 1D mk III Af problems : where are we now ?
I'm not aware of any camera with 100% focus hit rate.
Fair enough, but the shot wasn't asking a lot of the camera. I'll go back to P&S now.

  • Re: 1D mk III Af problems : where are we now ?
I believe you are mistaken. When you said FF (full frame) you have to be refering to the 1Ds Mark III not the 1D Mark III. There is a big difference. There was no autofocus issues related with the 1Ds Mark III it was the 1D Mark III and those issues were resolved over a year and a half ago.
I don't want

  • Re: Indoor public sport event with a flash pictures
They will go play soon and then I'll take pictures of them while they play. I have read on some forum that the ex580ii can reach up to 100 meter but I dont really beleive that.
The 580 flashes have a (metric) guide number of 58 meters. That assumes ISO 100 and f/1. With more ISO it'll reach farther (but

  • Re: 40D Shutter Release Button Not Working

My girlfriend just got her 40D back from Canon NJ. $180 (listed as just labor) plus tax and shipping, and they replaced the "dial assembly". Interesting that there's no parts charge. We also recently got our 16-35/2.8II back from Canon NJ - $90 (listed as just labor)+T/S, and they replaced the filter ring assembly. Maybe parts have a lifetime

  • Re: Charging eneloop batteries

Lots of great info at http://www.batteryuniversity.com. Amongst other things, they say that discharging to <1.0V clears memory issues, but the batteries should be exercised every 1-2 months, and definitely no less often than 4 months. I used to charge batteries after a gig, and again before a gig (if I had advance notice of the shoot). Nowadays,

  • Re: Is such an 1Dv camera possible? (See if I'm making sense!)
To make a FF camera that has a very high resolution (say 32mp) just like the resolution that the possible 1Ds IV will obtain. Make the camera capable of shooting at full resolution at a low frame rate (say 5fps) to maintain its utility equivalent to an 1Ds camera - this is not something new to do. Now, let's also
