Tadas N., I really like your picture of the coot. Great color

Bill W., great shot of the hawk.

Thanks for the advice, I wish I could have gotten eye level with the birds I was taking pictures of but they are privately owned and the closest I could get a clear shot is standing over them from a boardwalk in their pond. I hope in the future I can get the chance to get better shots since their owner is customer of where I work and he's very happy that I enjoy taking pictures of all his birds.

Here's another shot of the same black swan, which seemed to enjoy my presence compared to the other geese, ducks, and swans.

Here's a shot I recently took of some Purple Martins around their bird house.

Any thoughts or advice are appreciated since I am just learning photography with a SLR camera.

Wow! This thread gets better every time I pull it up. There are some fantastic shots on here. Not nearly up to the quality of the previous post, but I am learning with a telephoto prime. Hope no one minds all the pictures.

Thanks Bill and Tadas for the nice comments. I think all the regular participants in this thread are posting images that demonstrate improvement over time. I am seriously considering putting together some type of "workshop" for song bird photography in Kentucky or perhaps the Ospreys in South Carolina. I have never done such a thing but I think it would be fun and really cool to meet some of the group in person.

This is a gull taken from a pontoon boat at Santee Cooper lake in South Carolina, took this with my trusty old 40D + 70-200mm 2.8L at 125mm iso 800 f/6.3 1/4000

I spent some time at an Osprey's nest with 3 youngins hoping to capture some interesting interactions between the birds. I got nothing interesting, and the mother was clearly aware of my presence nearby. At one point she rose up, turned, and, well, I can only describe the view as a mother Osprey mooning a photographer! Oh well. Osprey 1, Photographer 0.

7D and EF 70-300L at 300mm, better beamer.

The juvenile Red-tails are still hanging out behind the house.

This shot is from this morning, 7/5, hand holding the 7D w/the 500mm and 1.4x.
