Joel....looks to me to be a female black headed grosbeak.....my only doubt is your home isn't in their normal range.

I looked closely in my Peterson's and I considered that but could not convince myself although I think it is a grosbeak or finch
I am wondering if it's an immature male rose-breasted grosbeak....they migrate through here.
you're probably right.....when I looked at the RB grosbeaks, the first years had a chest w/faint red.....which should becoming visible this far into the season.
But then, it could be a 2nd brood hatchling which would mean no faint red and a more tawny chest this time of year.
Here we have my first "Codibugnolo"!
There were five or seven of them moving like crazy inside a big tree, all in penumbra so catching one of them was a work of patience and reflexes!
