Is anyone disappointed Canon discontinued the 40D after such a short time on the market?
I think it's a sweet model and always thought I might get a second one as a back up.

I don't think it has been officially discontinued.

Yeah saw that. They are probably faster on the web updates than Canon. Canon will probably take it down real soon.
Adorama and J&R still have it in stock if you are looking for that back up.

Not so much now that it is discontinued already.

It was released at the end of August, 2007, so it was on the market 21 months. That's not all that short for today's cameras. Canon's PowerShot series are often on the market for about a year, except for the top-line cameras like the G series and super-zooms.
I'm looking for a 40D, including on eBay. I got my 30D a few months after the 40D came out and saved quite a bit. I may never get the 50D.

Well George, I think the only factor that has turned the 50D down is its price, other than that I don't see why the 50D is in any way not as good of a camera as the 40D.
I like the 40D. Typically, I upgrade to the next version, but the price difference vs the very slight increase in IQ wasn't worth it. Plus, the 40D has lower noise.

The only thing I miss on the 40D that 50D has is the hi-rez LCD. The microadjustment is also a cool function, but I haven't even used this function on my 5DII due to laziness.

I checked the Canon website today...the 40D is no longer in their lineup yet there are 4 Rebels still available?!?!? I understand that the XS is their entry level offering and the new T1i is their "advanced" consumer model but why keep the XSi and even more strange the XTi in production???
Does this mean that the 60D is coming soon? The 50D was announced on 08/26/2008 approximately 1 year after the 40D was announced on 08/20/2007.

When the 60D comes out, then the 40D will probably be "officially" discontinued.
I will be purchasing a 50D soon, will be my first xxD camera, did think of the 40D, but I may as well go for the newer model. Did consider waiting for the 60D, but MIGHT not be till January next year, maybe sooner, either way I'm happy to settle with the 50D.
Also, the extra 5MP is also an attraction. I know people will argue the difference between the 40 & 50, but hey, the 50 is a newer model, so may as well go for that one right considering I have been using an "antique" 350D the past few years.
I can see however, that the difference between the 40 and 50D is tiny to make itworthy an upgrade for 40D users.
