Speaking of, the retail price on that lens has gone up $250 since I purchased it. Wow.

You know, I can't see them making a Mark II of this lens. There's nothing glaringly wrong with the lens that's worth changing. So I doubt that's the reason. Maybe they simply don't have it in stock and don't see a supply of it coming in for the foreseeable future. Or maybe it's just a glitch. I bet Helen Oster would be able to tell us....

This lens has been delisted from Adorama for at least 3 weeks.

I don't know why. What's more is that unlike other items in which there is a backorder situation, this item's page and its description is simply gone. Other retailers have it in stock.

I think it is remotely possible that an update could come out. The IS could be improved slightly, as well as some of the softness at the 200mm end. It is also possible that more significant redesign could be in the works, since there are 4 UD elements but no fluorite elements that could improve the CA performance. I have a suspicion that the overall sharpness/contrast performance could be boosted. The 70-200/2.8L IS has an exceptionally large number of elements. While the performance of the current lens is quite good, there is always room for improvement. But it's all pure speculation.

It's far too old to have the new sub-wavelength coatings like the 24/1.4II and newer glass. Most everything with the new coatings seems to be getting amazing reviews compared to their predecessors.

It's interesting that she referenced the same article that spurned the question. I didn't find any real answers as to a replacement, but it looks as if it has certainly been discontinued.

That's why I attempted to go straight to the source. CanonRumors listed an email from Helen as the source of the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS discontinuation. She even referenced the site in her first reply, so I have no doubt she told someone else that it had been discontinued, and that person forwarded the info to CanonRumors. From what she's saying nowshe misread the initial information, andsimplycannot confirm or deny the discontinuation.

So... now I'm torn if I should wait and see as I'm looking to purchase at least the 70-200 2.8 IS soon, and possible the 24-70 fairly soon after!?

We'll I recently bought both of these lenses and they are ridiculously sharp. Except for lens flare on 24-70 I don't really need any improvements in these lenses. I expect the new versions will be substantially more expensive, so I'll be fine if they replace them. Actually I'll probably feel pretty good about it ($$).

I'm just worried the 2.8 IS will drop in price if I can still get it... or the new one will come out for a few hundred more and be 10x better, etc.

The price seems to be doing nothing but climbing! When the rebates first came out it was $1,700 or $1,500 minus the $200 rebate. Soon after that (like a week!) it went up to $1,800 or $1,600 minus the $200 rebate. Now it's $1,900 or $1,700 minus the $200 (extended) rebate. On top of that, Adorama had a refurbished copy list for $1,700 on their website. It has since been sold. Anyway, at least for now, this lens shows no sign of becoming a bargain anytime soon!

I doubt that its price will drop in the future. I think it will stay at the same price and then go out of stock completely before the new version arrives with a higher price.

If you can wait, you definitely should, but if the wait causes you to miss any important photographic opportunity, you should get the lens. 70-200 f/2.8L IS is a great lens and having a replacement does not make it an inferior lens.[:)]

But the 70-200 is on my list and the 24-70 is the next up.. if I wait, I might get both them at the same time .. if they release an IS version of the 24-70!?

I'll be going on a quick vacation next week, so I can at least wait a few weeks LOL!

If Canon makes a mark II, I am getting it as soon as I can. Don't get me wrong, I love the one I have right now. But I am a complete sucker for shiny new objects. I'd easily pay $2000 for the new one, provided I could sell my existing one--and it's not even a month old!

Go ahead. You know the new lens, assuming there is one,will cost more and just because it's out there doesn't make the current one any less outstanding. You'll be able to get most of the money out of it, if need be.

I'm still raising funds for a 70-200 2.8 IS and I'm sure if a new one comes out before the end of the year, I might still not have enough funds to do so but if they do release one, that will be my new target unless the reviews says otherwise. I just hope that if the 70-200 2.8 IS II comes out, the old version would drop its price.

Do you guys think the owners of the original lens would start selling theirs for the Mk II of this lens? If sharpness at 2.8 improves then maybe they will. hehehe +$300 :P

not, it is still a great lens! I was lucky enough (smart enough?) to grab one
for $1500 when the rebates first came out this spring. I was going back and
forth between the f/4 IS and the f/2.8 IS and in the end went with the f/2.8 IS
and have not regretted it. I do a lot of indoor and my kids sports and the
wider aperture was the right choice for me. Although it is twice the weight,
being 6’/210<sub>lbs</sub> I manage it no problem. I did get the BG-E2N battery
grip – I should mention my body is a 50D – to help balance it out, and that
works well for me.
<p class="MsoNormal"]<span> I second Colin,
great zoo lens. I went with the family shortly after getting this lens and took
@350 shots and they were almost all keepers. I have a mountain goat looking
directly at me and it looks like I was three feet in front of him. Additionally,
the candid shots of my kids and their friend are outstanding. You cannot pose
kids being kids, and when you are on top of them, they tend to pose. However,
when you are two exhibits away they tend to act natural and not posed. If I had
waited for something better/cheaper, I would not have those images and hundreds
of others I have taken this summer. I cannot put a dollar amount on some of
those, but I am glad I got this lens.
<p class="MsoNormal"]<span> As far as the
price, Mark is correct. I check the Adorama refurbished Canon frequently and I have
seen the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS at least twice and maybe three times in the last
five weeks for $1700 and they are gone in twenty-four hours! I have nothing
against the refurbished, I have purchased some and other than a “refurbished”
sticker, placed side by side with a new unit they have been indistinguishable. It
is just that a couple of months ago they were selling the new unit for $200
less that the refurbished ones are going for – when they can get them. I would
suggest you get the lens now – if you can find one – take your pictures and
worry about a new release when it someday comes. If you treat your equipment as

your images too. In my local camera shop, they tell me they do not see “L”
glass for sale very often and as such when they do, they get a good price for

Good point. Also, Canon L lenses seem to hold their value pretty well, so you should be able to sell the lens at a resonable "loss." If you buy an used lens, you may even be able to sell it for more than you paid for it!

I tracked the 24-70mm f/2.8L prices on eBay for a while. The average selling price then was $1,047, versus a new lens at $1,270, $1,190 with rebate. Not all of the sales were strictly comparable, of course: some lenses were nearly new, some several years old; some included a filter, though often they were low-quality filters; some had the original box, others were missing the hood. The average price rose a bit while I was tracking it, from $980 to $1,047. I've bought several L lenses on eBay, and none new. (The only lenses I've bought new in the last 2 years were a cheap Sigma 28-300mm f/3.5-6.3 when I first got my 30D and a 50mm f/1.8 II.) Here is a comparison of the prices I paid (excluding shipping) and the current non-rebate new price. In most cases, I paid less than the average price on eBay.

70-200mm f/4L $545 (including tripod ring) vs $640 + 150 = $790 (a real bargain!)

70-200mm f/4L IS $919 vs $1100

70-200mm f/2.8L IS $1325 ("well-used" & missing soft pouch) vs $1900 (retail price has gone up a lot in the last year; the retail price when I bought mine was $1699)

100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS $995 vs $1500 (that price has gone up a lot, as well)

200mm f/2.8L $520 (including black ring) vs $749 + 150 = $899 (another major bargain)

17-55mm f/2.8 IS ("almost L") $780 vs $1030

If Canon does come out with a "Mark II" 70-200mm f/2.8L IS and it's more expensive, the value of used "Mark I" lenses may go up. If it comes out at the same price as the current lens, used values will likely drop.

Well, I'm got the OK from the g/f :) And if its' still available and the same price ($2k Cdn) when I get back (going on vacation tomorrow morning for a week).. I'm picking one up.

And if the new one comes out and it's so much better, I might think about a trade-in deal.. we'll see. But I tried one out quickly on a 50D body in the store, I have the 40D .. and it was so nice!!

Possibly picking up the 580 Flash at the same time, then to save for the 24-70 (v2 maybe?? ;)) .. and then finally save for 5DII or possibly what replaces it by the time I have enough extra cash.

So folks, let's say Canon makes a version II of our EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM, what do you think its price would be? I say if you can grab an original 70-200 f/2.8 IS, go for it[:)]

if Nikon priced their new glass with $2399, I think Canon would be releasing theirs around $2199. Or maybe I'm just imagining things :P

There may not be a price drop. Sometimes, when Canon has introduced a new version of a lens, the price went UP. Case in point is the TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II: the original was (and still is, for now) selling for $1200 ("http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/12092-USA/Canon_2543A004AA_Wide_Angle_Tilt_Shift.html#featur es), the new version is $2199 ("http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/12092-USA/Canon_2543A004AA_Wide_Angle_Tilt_Shift.html). A similar thing happened with the 24mm f/1.4L II, as I recall, and may have happened with the 16-35mm f/2.8L II.

The current B&H price of the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS is $1900, $1700 with rebate. That's less than the guestimates other members have made for the "II" lens.

It may, or Canon may discontinue the rebate, so the selling price may go up by $200. Another thing to note is that, very often, when Canon announces a new lens or camera (usually in conjunction with some big show), it may not be available for months or, it may be like the new TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II lens--it comes in stock at B&H, Adorama, etc, but is gone within minutes.

One approach might be to get a used 70-200mm f/2.8L IS, as I did. It cost me $1325. The hood was scuffed (not unusual if one uses a bag), but it works fine. Then, if you decide to get the "Mark II" lens, later, you can probably sell the "original" for nearly what you paid for it.

They can't launch a 24-70/2.8L IS II because there is no 24-70/2.8L IS. We can be sure Canonrumors.com got this one wrong. :-) There might be a 24-70/2.8L IS soon, but I doubt it, because Nikon doesn't have one. A new 70-200/2.8 IS makes sense based on Nikon's new 70-200/2.8.

Wahhhh, I apparently waited too long.. and it's now sold out at all local shops.

I guess I'll have to wait until they announce new ones are get them back in stock.

Always afraid of buying stuff online from the US and getting an extra 20%+ tacked on when it's shipped due to duties, etc.

I found someone selling one online locally .. and it's Brand New in Box still, but half the warranty is gone.

Basically they bought a bunch of equipment early this year, going back to school, so selling it.

I'm picking it up tomorrow morning if all goes well. And for a good price $1900 Cdn, so I know it's a great lens.. and if the version II comes out and it gets rave reviews, I can always sell this one off and upgrade later on.. but from the reviews, pictures, etc I see.. I'll most likely stick with the version I for a long time.

Now to hope they release a 24-70 2.8L IS ;)

Finally after over a month of thinking about it (while having the $$)

I'm the proud owner of this wonderful Lens, now to test it out in the following weeks, off to pickup my 580 Flash today!

I hope that you'll enjoy the lens. It can do quite well, if you can tolerate the weight. I got it solely to use for indoor sports (horse shows) and it's often still not fast enough, so I use a faster prime (e.g., 85mm f/1.8, 100mm f/2--eventually, I'll get a 135mm f/2). For outdoors, I usually use the 70-200mm f/4L IS I had for quite a while before getting the f/2.8L IS. It's a lot lighter, faster focusing, sharper and has better IS. (Ken Rockwell, among others, found that he could shoot handheld at lower shutter speeds with the f/4L IS than with the f/2.8L IS. I can often get decent shots handheld at 1/15 while at 200mm. The best I can do with the f/2.8L IS is about 1/25-1/30.)

Of course, if I'd bought the f/2.8L IS lens first, I wouldn't have bought the f/4L IS.

Well, I'm pretty sure I'll love it no matter what!

But I really like the 2.8 over the 4 as I plan to use it indoors and low-light. Plus it's built like a tank and of course feels like it weighs the same [:D]

But for the price I paid, I can't really complain. It was $400 less than the cheapest I could of got it locally if it was even in stock.

At first I was tempted to go with something cheap like the f4 Non-IS but after playing with the 2.8 IS in the store, I was sold :)

Now to save for the next batch of splurges!

LOL...I don't have a wife, but whenever I'm thinking about making a big purchase, I just go ahead and do it--then tell my girlfriend about it later. She just rolls her eyes knowing that getting mad and arguing with me won't make any differencepost-purchase. :-)

It's all about continuous upgrading...buy something, sell it for nearly what you paid for it, use the proceeds to buy something that costs just a little more. I've gone from a 20D with kit lenses to a somewhat respectable respectable kit (40D, Tokina 12-24, Canon 24-105, Sigma 100-300 f/4, flash, tripod, etc) in about two years, $100 at a time :) The fiance rarely complains, and it gives me time to plan out what will help me most...

There is speculation that Canon may do that very thing...but nothing confirmed.

I've been told by my local shop guy that they're meeting with Canon Canada on the 25th... so I'm assuming we'll see press releases around that date on any new releases, etc.

They have to announce and release them soon IMO, the Olympics is fast approaching!
