I really liked the other post your best threads and thought it would be interesting to see everyone's perspective on zoo photos. Hopefully there will be some takers. Here is my contribution, a two headed giraffe.

Taken with XSi, 85mm lens, 1/320 secat f2.5, iso 200.

Got this one while visiting Vietnam at Saigon Zoo (right before being robbed by a Xichlo driver - lovely)

This one is of my sister playing with one of her mates at the zoo she works at as a zoologist. His name is Snappy Tom and he's a 4.5m Australian Saltwater Crocodile.

I love the croc! That is an awesome shot.

I need to keep this one going. My 3 year oldis loving the pictures.

While not technically sound or perfectly in focus, I really like this picture. Water is a natural barrier for the monkey and this guy was hanging about 50 feet from the nearest tree trying to fish.

Taken with XSi, f7.1, 1/400 sec, iso 320, 70-300mmISat 300mm.

Here are a couple of my shots from the zoo:

Taken with the Canon Xsi and the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS Lens:

Taken with the Canon Xsi and the 'nifty 50' (Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens). I was amazed that I was able to capture this shot in the ominous blue light (taken with natural light):

Wow, lots of great pics! That pic of the Croc is amazing seeing the size of that thing and knowing your sis is the one feeding it. The only thing I'd do different is to crop off the handto the right for better composition of just the two of them (... or you couldjust let the croc do it :)

Here's the only other whale pic worth postingas its a little sharper than the one above. It was quite dark and getting high enough shutter speeds toreduce the blur of jumping whales was near impossible. fwiw, the white whale was taken with a 70-200 f2.8 L and the Orca's were taken with the 17-55 f2.8 IS EF-S both on a 30D.

That out-stretched elephantis areally great capturebut i'm finding a lot of humor in it now that I've done a double take on it... its seems wrong in so many ways.

Which isworse, the dad not taking the cigarette out of his mouth or him holding his kid out over a precarious 12'(?) drop (a la Michael Jackson rip)?

No offense to smokers or Jackson fans but I can't help but chuckle [:D]

I'm a big fan of these"post your best picture" threads, as they give us an opportunity to photograph and share the images. That way we can learn from one another. We should have more of these similar threads and more photographers participate it them.

My fovorites so far are: the elephant, crocodile, muskrats and the orcas.

btaylor: that elephant picture is the one I like the most...since you've been to VN I'm sure you've seen the way parents hold their children on motorbike? At least the guy's standing still in the image. I was originally from Saigon, Vietnam and very familiar with the zoo there. Sorry to know that you got mugged while being there.

<div style="CLEAR: both"]</div>

Absolutely! It always made me laugh seeing a motorbike with 4 or 5 people on them and only the father having a helmet on. Self preservation must be the key.

Sorry to know that you got mugged while being there.

Wasn't the end of the world. Luckily there was only a few thousand dong in there (very little). Certainly didn't ruin the trip. Halong Bay is one of the most magnificent places I've ever seen.

Cheers.

Although not my favorite shot of that day its the one I was most surprised to see when I was reviewing.

Despite using 70-200 2.8L all day this was actually caught using my 50 1.4 at 1/1600 ona 400D. The piece of horse meat looks even more detailed at 100%

Lemur taken with 400D, 75-300. 1/400, f6.3, ISO400. When I think back, it was this trip to Dublin Zoo that decided I needed to upgrade to L glass. Too many shots were soft and lacking contrast.

I had another trip to the zoo this weekend and the kids gave me a couple of seconds to snapshots of jellyfish. These were taken with 85mm @ 2.2, iso 800, 1/30 sec. PP noise and contrast with a little saturation adjustment. They are in a tank with the only lightsource in the room being a blacklight.

Its all lens (70-200 2.8L). Both at F2.8, first at 200mm, second at 155mm. The lens just makes it so easy to get nice pics!!!

This place has mesh as well but the difference is you get to go right up to it. Telephoto lens against the mesh with wide aperture = mesh disappear

This peacock did not trust me. Captured at the Lipetsk Zoo in Russia (he is not use to seeing anything but point and shoot cameras I guess).(Canon 1000d, 28-135mm)

Again, got this while at the Lipetsk Zoo....the Russian says, "Be careful, this animal is dangerous!" It is the cage for red squirrels :)

My favorite shot at the Syracuse Zoo in upstate NY. He was building a home near the elephant display...but since he is not part of the Zoo, he enjoys his freedom to come and go. (Canon 1000d, 70-200mm F4)

I got my new 70-200 2.8 IS for my 50D just in time for a family trip to the Buffalo Zoo. I got a lot of great pictures. I chose four for this forum. The ram above is probably my favorite of the day. He currently stares at me from my computer desktop. I love that lens! I would appricate any critique and advise. I am looking to submit some photos for the zoo contest this fall. I just got back into shooting last fall and moved from film to digital. I forgot the rush of getting a great shot!

Thanks.

That is the most personality I've seen in a giraffe picture, ever!

Thanks Colin. This is actually one of the first pictures I ever blown up. I shot it with my 5DmkII and It is so sharp even at 20x30. I matted it and it's going to be a b-day gift for my girlfriend. She loves giraffes and really loves this shot.

THANKS!

The local zoo here has a platform that is about 15 feet or so off the ground where you can actually feed and pet the giraffes. This one was just coming at me and got pretty close. I cranked the f/stop to 11 to try to keep as much of his head in focus as possible. Some times I look at the image and wished I had blurred the background a little and then sometimes I think it's alright. It probably could have used a touch of fill flash but...

I used the 24-105 L @ 35mm.

This photo was taken TODAY in fact... doesn't it look like he was sitting and posing just for the photo... like I brought him into my studio... put up a backdrop, told him to pose and how to pose and snapped it? haha!!

This was taken with my Canon 7D and an EF 300mm f/4 L IS I was renting.... NICE lens! Believe it or not, it was shot through fence (well I should HOPE so if you know what I mean!) but because he was so far away the fence completely blurred out.... photo still nice and crisp. Shot in medium-RAW and light edits in Photoshop and Lightroom 2.

Hi,

I agree with 42molybdenum there are some great shots in this thread.

I don't like Zoo's much, prefer the animals to be in the wild, saying this, I do thinkZoo's give the photographer greatoppertunities to capture animalsthat don't live in their country.I accidently ventured past a Elephant hospitalat AyuttayahThailand two weeks ago, cruised in to take a peek seeing I was there, it's a bit like a Zoo.

I would love to see it myself. I have tried two different browsers (IE and Chrome) and there seems to be an inordinately large number of broken links in this thread. I can't see several pictures, and many are concentrated in posts by individuals. Is it a problem on my end, or are there several pictures here that no one can see now?

Thanks, Bob! OMG! They can't lock Santa up! This was open so kids could bring their letters to Santa and there were many Santa's roaming around &amp; kids had to guess which one was the real one. My grandkids couldn' t make it but I was there with Santa letter in hand![A] I wasn't going to missmy chance to ask for a 5DII &amp; 85mm f/1.2L II &amp; the new 70-300mm! Great capture of the grizzly Denise. I like it. I don't think I have ever seen a black rhino in captivity. I was sure there was one somewhere, but I haven't seen it.

+1 [Y] Great pics, Denise!

I don't think I have ever seen a black rhino in captivity. I was sure there was one somewhere, but I haven't seen it.

There are a couple of hundred worldwide. I recall seeing them at the San Diego Wild Animal Park, although I didn't take any pictures of them (we lived fairly close to there for a few years). The only photo of a black rhino that I have was taken in a somewhat larger enclosure than you'd find in a zoo - theNgorongoroCrater in Tanzania:

Nate, Wow, Great shots. But I do have a couple of questions, On thier web page, Safari Park mentions viewing the lions through glass; so did you take these shots through glass? or are there other obstructed areas you can view the lions from? If you did take these through glass, Double wow.

Great work as usual,

Bob

Hi guys, thanks for the nice comment

Bob, these weren't shot through glass, the lion exhibit at SD Zoo Safari Park has a few viewing areas.

Rich, being a member of the San Diego Zoo, I get unlimited access to the zoo and the park, the first few times I was there I did what most people would do, which was going to every exhibit and trying to take as many photos as I could. I ended up with lots of images with busy background, bad head angle, no eye contact, people head in the way, ect, you get the idea. After that I decided to pick one exhibit and spent as much time as I could there (The Lion Camp Exhibit for this year). The longer you spend at an exhibit the more you know about the behavior of the animals, the lighting direction and condition, where to shoot without busy background and what type of equipment you need to get the image.

Thanks Nate, I'll keep that in mind!

What type of "post processing" do you do, because all of your photos seem to have a wonderful, dreamy look to them?

Did you use a Circ. Pol filter?

How's this for pulling a thread out of the archives!

Actually, I even took these photos last year but I've been spending an awful lot of time going through old photos. Now that I have learned a tad more about post-processing, I was able to pull the first shot out of the deep dark shadows and the second shot out of the over-exposed sunshine. At least it looks better than I could have done last year!

Since I still had a rented lens for the afternoon, thought I'd see what else I could shoot. This thread caught my eye, so a trip to the Zoo seemed in order. Hadn't been to this zoo since .. about 1978. Found out that most of it is closed in winter. But still had fun in my compressed 2hr zoo trip (late night slept in, forgot to charged battery)

I was plagued by double chain link and finger printed glass . I'd love to know tips on shooting around through those obstacles.

Anyway here's a couple that I liked from Day two of testing Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM

@Kombi first, use a smaller f/# to help blur the chain link! Depending on how good you are with PS or other software you can shoot multiple (more than 4) exposures of your target as you drift to the side. If your object is far away and mostly stationary you can use these images to help piece together the subject through the blurred chain. There may be commercial programs that do this straight away. In MATLAB I do something similar called correlating areas of multiple images. Anything that doesn't correlate gets filtered.

Thanks Chad, next time I'll drop it down, and take a few shots till sufficiently blurred. As for post processing, I'm limited to picasa and software that came with my canon for now.

@Kombi Wow, talk about pushing the IS on that lens: 1/30 @300mm on a 1.6 crop sensor. I'm amazed it came out as sharp as it did! There must not have been very much light even though it looks like daytime - nasty overcast? On my T2i I'm hard-pressed to find the noise in my shots at ISO 400 - it's really no worse than 200 imo. But I've got to give it to you, I can see no evidence of the chain links.

Yes sky was very overcast at time of picture (like the sky behind the mountain goat) , the mountain lion was also under a bit of a shelter in the shade I used a bit of 'fill light' in picasa to see the image.

Sorry Huge Post. After going over these I realize I should have been shooting the tigers with a much higher shutter speed. I think I just got so excited that they came over to the front since I had been waiting at the fence for 30 minutes, I just lost track of what I was doing. Hence amateur photographer.

Thanks for looking anyway.
