i own a Canon XTi and recently when i use my 50mm 1.8 about 80% of the shots instead of shooting an "error 99" message pops up. fortuantely its only with this lens. a few months ago, i dropped it and the plastic on the bottom came off, i was able to re-attach it and it worked fine for awhile. any ideas on what it is? if it isn't worth fixing, i may go ahead and spring for a 50mm 1.4 this owuld be bittersweet, my 50mm 1.8 was my first dslr lens and i've taken some great shots with it, but from what i've heard about the 1.4 i wont miss it much if and when i replace it

I've never had that happen before, but you might take it to a photo-shop and get an estimate then decide whether to upgrade or not.

You could always keep the 50 1.8 as a little non-working memento to your first lens.

When my 50 1.8 lens broke (into to two), I ended up buying a new 50 f1.8 since the probable cost to repair it would be half the price of a new one. so if i were in your situation i'd just do an upgrade to the 1.4

The 50mm 1.8 is proberly the most replaceble lens because of it's price but with that also comes along the build quality. It's optic quality is far from bad, of course, but I would upgrade for the 1.4 or if you're looking for a really great upgrade and a long lasting lens go for the 1.2?

And as noted before, repairing it will problerly cost more then a new one.

Yep, sounds like a good excuse for an upgrade...hmmm...I might have to "drop" mine too.

Jorundr-Jorgensen as much as i would love to upgrade to a 1.2 i'm still wondering if i can afford the 1.4 being the poor college student that i am. but thanks for for all the quick responses, it appears i will be upgrading when i can, i'm excited!

Yeah, I understand that, that on costs a little fortune. Perhaps in the future? Anyway, I own the 1.4 and I'm sure you'll be satisfied with it, the USM is heavenly and it has full-time manual override in one-shot af mode.

I probably wouldn't even keep thebusted 50mm f1.8 II (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-50mm-f-1.8-II-Lens-Review.aspx]<span style="color: #3366cc;), it doesn't even weigh enough to make a good paper weight. [:P]
