Anybody have any experience with this lens? The reviews seem pretty good. Would this be a good first macro lens?

For $40 more you could pick up a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro Auto Focus Lens - Refurbished ("http://www.adorama.com/CA10028AFNR.html?searchinfo=Canon+Refurbished) from Adorama which I feel would be the better move

I haven't used it myself, but I've seen lots of images from this lens. As far as contrast and resolution goes, I think it is just as good as the Canon 100mm f/2.8, which is saying a lot.

I haven't had experience with the Tamron. I have had experience with the EF100 f2.8. The Tamron telescopes when focusing. TheCanon does not. I'm with Mark E. on this one.Go for the refurb Canon. I am a big fan of Tamron lenses but I chose the Canon EF 100 f2.8 as my Macro. I actually use it with a Tamron 1.4Xteleconverter because a Canon 1.4X is not compatable. See penny examples here ("/forums/p/1856/13954.aspx#13954)

Go with the Canon, as has been stated. I have it myself and it is superb! Also makes a great portrait lens.
