I am a firm beleiver in Craigslist and Kijiji, but I'm just too worried about spending almost 3K on a camera and not having a warranty. That being said I'm a little reluctant to pick on up at future shop because the prices are still pretty steep.

I have tried to find a refurbished one online but no luck yet. If anyone has any suggestions that would be really helpful. Thanks so much!

Note: I am located in London, Ontario, Canada.

Adorama? Sure you'll have to pay shipping, but there is no duty on cameras and lenses. I recently saved over $700 ordering a basic T1i kit from Adorama, vs buying at a Canadian retailer. Adorama also ups the warranty to 1 year for refurbs from the usual 90 days.

Be sure to visit via a link from here to get Bryan his referral payment.

http://www.adorama.com/ICA5DM2R.html?searchinfo=canon+5d ("http://www.adorama.com/ICA5DM2R.html?searchinfo=canon+5d)-$2,399.95. Be sure to add currency conversion + a percent of two fee from your credit card company to perform the conversion to properly compare to a local price.

Hi...

I would double check the duty part as I got dinged for duty when I ordered a lens from BHPhoto. I still ended up saving a couple of hundred of dollars.

But as mentioned, you may be better off purchasing from the US with the CAD to US dollar! The disadvantage to this is the after sales support, more for convenience than anything when purchasing locally.

thanks for the insight! yes I have been looking down south. the service issue is big for me, as I would be really hesitant to deal with an american online store, rather than my local henery's or something like that. any idea when they will be coming down in price? the mk iii should theoretically be out in just over a year I think

Another issue buying stuff from south of the border is the issue of brokerage charges to import your purchase. Canada Post charges a $5.00 flat rate while couriers can charge up to hundreds of dollars depending on the cost of the item. Make sure you check their shipper before purchasing.

Yeah, that has been a problem in the past. UPS standard has horrible brokerage fees, but theexpedited rate includes brokerage (link) ("http://www.ups.com/content/ca/en/shipping/cost/zones/customs_clearance.html). For my T1i+3 lenses+second battery+soft lens cases + USB card reader + memory card, I paid $60 shipping.

As for the duty, I've checked somewhat, and it appears to be true. Many sites claim it and link to government pages.

Duty talk 1 ("http://photo.net/filters-bags-tripods-accessories-forum/00730V)
Duty talk 2 ("http://photography-on-the.net/forum/archive/index.php/t-69303.html)
Duty talk 3 ("http://www.photoprice.ca/article/tax-duty-brokerage-demystified)
Government site ("http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/trade-commerce/tariff-tarif/2008/01-99/tblmod-1-eng.html)- check table 90.

LOL, maybe a trip to NY for a week, should be worth the effort in cost savings!

Sorry, it does not help your cause.

Came across the following...

Judging by the prices posted, you may want to buy new!

Have you looked at or at least compared prices between vistek.ca, henrys.ca and cameracanada.ca? I realize that you prefer used/refurb, but I guess a plan 'B' would not hurt.

Don't forget 'The Camera Store' (anyone outside of Alberta can save themselves the PST, atleast until the HST arrives).

$2892.53 for a 5DmkII there - link ("http://www.thecamerastore.com/products/cameras/digital-cameras/digital-slr-cameras/canon-eos-5d-mark-ii-body), but out of stock
$3785.51 for the 5DmkII kit (24-105L) - link ("http://www.thecamerastore.com/products/cameras/digital-cameras/digital-slr-cameras/canon-eos-5d-mark-ii-24-105mm-f4l), which is in stock.

Aden camera (link ("http://www.adencamera.com/index.asp?Category=6&Manufacturer=125&showall=yes) ) in Toronto has the 5DmkII for $2699.99, or with the 24-105 for $3499.99

Blacks (link ("http://www.blackphoto.com/blacks/catalog.jsp?catalogId=cat40008&viewAll=true)) has the 5DmkIIfor $2999.99, w/ 24-105 for $3699.99

Camera Canada has it for $3279 as part of a 'build your own kit', and claim it's $2948.97 with a rebate that expired two weeks ago (isn't that automated?)

Vistek has the body for $3099, or by visiting via visaperks, you can get the body, BG-E6 and LP-E6 for $3479, or w/ the grip, battery and kit lens for $4329

While you can get the body $300 cheaper as refurb from Adorama, after shipping and currency conversion, you're better off just going with Aden... so, um, ignore my original post (though it may still apply to others looking for cheaper cameras, or lenses).

Thanks to David and the rest of the posters for taking the time to reply to my thread! Your information has been extremely helpful. I think I'm going to hold off till after x-mas and see if any deals pop up. I am continually amazed at the great support and friendly nature of this board! Thumbs up!
