Hi S,

It could be your intention, but IMO I think the image is too soft. You do have nice lighting though. Best Regards

Sinh,

Thanks for the critique. I wanted the focus to be her face, but probably should have stopped down a little more...

Your depth-of-field with that lens, that close, would probably be less than 2 inches. And f1.4 will produce soft results. The only way to get the entire subject sharp at that aperture would be to shoot from further away. But I like the shallow depth of feld for the intimate nature of the image. And the softness works very well. Nicely done!

I generally don't want photos of people to pick up every detail (unless that's the object of the photo). Do we really want to see every pore, zit, and whisker?

Here is a handy tool for determining your depth-of-field:

I like the picture, even though I'd like it if the eye were sharper. =)

Everyone,

Thanks for all of your kind comments. Just a note on the personal side, this our miracle granddaughter. She's the daughter of our son who at the age of 16 was diagnosed with Leukemia and was not expected to live. After going through9 months ofchemotherapy and a bone marrow transplanthe was told that he almost certainly would not be able to have children. He and his wife also now have a son...

Thanks again for your comments and critique. They are much appreciated.

That's a great story - thanks for sharing both it and the picture.

I really like the shot - especially the framing. The lines of the hat and strap flow through the picture very nicely. Cute kid.

No, her mother had her dressed like that and I essentially chased her around the house trying to snap a few. This was just a lucky shot...

Great portrait. I like the shallow DOF, but agree that a small amount of sharpening might help. Even if only around the eyes.

With those big blue eyes, I'm sure the focus would've been on the face either way, I agree it's way too soft, I wanted to see some texture in her furry shirt and hat, otherwise the framing and lighting is perfect.
