The start of a big nest?
Interesting,and nice shots.

Arnt

Thanks Arnt! I really hope it doesn't turn into something big, but it probably will. Funny how he's building it in the wide open on the deck post????

Wow, Jayson!!! Now that is what I call a sharp macro shot, love those first two!! Did you use a tripod? Macro slider?

Thanks Denise! I actually just rested the hood of the lens on the side of the post and moved my flash where it was needed. I was watching the kids so no tripod and I don't own a macro rail. The ones that I didn't rest the hood were all blurry.

Here are a couple more...that thing beside him is a nail head. That's how small this guy is...

It is amazing how much stuff came out of that little insect (nest material that is).
Again, your shots are beyond belief how detailed they get. To be able focus stack without a tripod has to take some effort.

Thank you Pat for the compliments! I was happy she just stuck with what she had previously completed. I haven't seen her back or her men :). To focus stack on some of the stuff I have been, I usually have a good place to brace me or the camera. Most of the time, I rest the hood of the camera on the something solid that happens to be in the area and just move it back and forth. It actually works really well. This last shot I couldn't use my easy method in PP because she kept moving her legs and there was ghosting everywhere. I had to take 4 or 5 shots and individually blend them together after they were all aligned.

Finally got an opportunity to attempt focus stacking....this little guy was very calm, I placed him in a shallow box and was able to get several shots. This one was a stack of 4 images.

It's been a very weird few days for me and my photography.
Tried going out to take shots for the new assignment the last few days, missed good light twice, got chased by cows, left my camera at work last night, tonight I forgot to swing past the bed shop on the way home to pay off my new bed before it gets delivered tomorrow, home late because I went taking photos instead (got some great shots of sunset light in misty rain, nearly crashed the car trying to stop in time then ran back and missed the good shot), got about 2m away from a wild kangaroo on the side of the road (got some headshots with my FL 55mm), and then when I'm finally home and cooking dinner I go to the bathroom and see this guy on the floor, so I have to take some shots of course (almost forgot i was meant to be cooking dinner). And now it's just started with the lightning outside, so I may as well go outside and try get that too.

But in the meantime, I have no freaking idea what this is. He was really slow so was either half asleep or just born (no idea what is the gunge on his eyelids, from an egg or just moulted?).
Anyone know South Australian Lizards?

I agree with Joel, the headshot is my favourite. I think it's a Common Smooth Knob-tailed Gecko, Nephrurus levis levis (https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=Nephrurus+levis+levis&num=50&hl=en&safe=off&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=d_B1UN-tO-eP0AXi4oCIAQ&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1680&bih=842).

Dr Croubie
10-11-2012, 12:26 AM
Thanks, that looks like him. It's weird if this is the 'common' type, I've never seen one before (and certainly not being dopey inside, I did put him outside after all the photos though). According to here (http://reptile-database.reptarium.cz/species?genus=Nephrurus&species=levis), it's found all over Aus.

Normally what i see around here are what this guy (http://www.andydownunder.com/nature_profiles?id=1) calls a 'marbled gecko' (or any number of other 'skinks' on that page.
Also he's got one of the ones I had, calls it a 'Barking Gecko' (he said he found it near the Onkaparinga Gorge, which is not too far from my place), under a totally different latin name.
Maybe I'll email some pics to friends at the museum, they might know.

And yeah, the 4th is also my favourite, click on it and you can get a full 10MB original. Wasn't bad for an EF 100mm f/2.0 @ f8 or so, 7D, some combination of Kenko tubes, M at 1/160s, and 430EX in ETTL, camera-mounted and reflecting off the walls, shower screen, and toilet bowl. Processed in Landscape of all styles (made his colours best, with 0 saturation), bit of contrast and that's it.

Doc, what a ride. Wish someone had taken photos or video of some of that. You should have your own reality show, "Life of a photography enthusiast", or "Kangaroos and Lenses".

Very Hallmark-looking. I like the PP a lot. Thank you! I did three layers of the same texture over my flowers using three different blend modes at various opacities. The texture was originally pink and orange until I changed it in NIK Color Efex.

Lovely texture Denise, it DOES look like greeting card or stationary material, cool!

In this image of rusty bolts I added a texture but only to the out of focus areas:

Fun fact #1 - All the top coins happened to be minted in 1980, I didnt notice this until I straightened out the faces for the pictures, quite the coincidence.
Fun fact #2 - There is $3.99 here. 7 quarters, 16 dimes, 14 pennies, and 10 nickels.

A couple more macros to get this one going again.
Snowflakes were from this morning. I think next time I might try something different than construction paper. I think it detracts from the flake.

And from the now dead plants. These didn't last long with my green thumb. I took this with an extension tube on a 24-70 and stacked 6 shots to get the full depth of the flower.

Only for magnification:o....this little guy was only 6 inches long and smaller than a pencil in diameter....about the size of a large earthworm. I picked him up to pose him a few times and he didn't even try to bite me....as I said he was very docile....maybe just out from hibernation and kinda sluggish.

I am not afraid of snakes in general although a big one I would not attempt to handle so readily and I do recognize the local pit vipers. I think it may be a juvi King Snake because we have seen adults around in the past.

I am not afraid of snakes in general although a big one I would not attempt to handle so readily and I do recognize the local pit vipers. I think it may be a juvi King Snake because we have seen adults around in the past.

Oh yea, now give me the rest of the details - geez anyone would of course know..... just kidding - I haven't come across too many snakes in the wild prefer they go their way and I will go mine. Here in Florida a month or two ago there was a bounty on boa constrictors. Everyone was expecting these masses would go through the everglade and all but eradicate them. Something like 20 were brought in - snakes are experts in avoiding detection :).

There is something engaging about them - at least you get'm to smile.

My favourite part is the note is redeemable in lawful money. Is that still on recent paper money?

Yep...if you read about the history of paper money it started out as actual promissory notes that were redeemable as gold coinage which was considered "lawful money". Hence the "gold standard" was born where all promissroy notes had to be backed up with gold. We have long since abandoned this principle unfortunately. The paper was easier to carry and transfer but was not originally considered to be legal money. It was and still is made of paper with a high linen content which gives it incredible longevity.

Dave

Dave, sorry it took me so long to respond. I really just use the focus as close as you can to the subject, move your camera either forward or backward, and fire off a series of shots. Usually I have good luck getting most of the bug or flower in focus as I move. I sometimes use a stick, branch or fence to stabilize myself or my lens. I adjust one of the photos in LR then apply to the rest. Then I use photoshop to align the layers, then blend the layers with stacking. After you do it a couple times it is actually pretty easy.

Here are a couple shots of a bee I captured last week. I stacked 6 shots each. I see that I did miss a shot where the focus isn't crisp on both shots.

I thought I had found an unusual species of bee on my buddleja bush, until I saw it hovering. Bees can't do that. This one is a hoverfly that has evolved to mimic the honey bee.

A couple of weeks ago, my wife was out in the garden and came rushing back inside to tell me there were a couple of praying mantises in the yard. We put them in a terrarium so our daughter's kindergarten class could have a look. These shots are of the male, taken after we released them back into the yard.

Nice shots Neuro....I just received my MP-E 65 and MT EX 24 flash from Adorama (found a good deal on a used system) and I took this today hand held. Man, the depth of field is so thin with this lens I can see a focusing rail in my future. No other way to do stack focus. This is a single image.

Awesome images, Joel. The contractors are coming soon to build me a nice workbench in my garage. I plan on making part of it a dedicated macro studio so I can set up my rails and lighting to keep me busy this winter.

Here's one from a recent trip out with the butterfly club.

It is an amazing lens but a macro flash and focus rail are just about mandatory due to the super skinny dof, especially if you want to stack focus:)

Thanks, Joel!

After seeing Jayson's wonderful snowflake shots, I wanted to find a smooth, dark background free from the fibers found on gloves or mittens. Joel, I know that you often have lovely backgrounds that are 'free' - forest, field, etc, but I spare no expense for my hobby. Accordingly, the smooth, dark background for my snowflake shots cost over $30,000.

2123

In all fairness, I should point out that this particular background just might have a few other uses, such as transporting three kids in their car seats. :p

I just brushed off the glass, waited for attractive snowflakes to land on it, and shot the pictures (handheld) before they slid down off the glass.

Not much action here in a long time! I bought a used Tamron 90 VC recently and wanted to take some photos. I didn't expect much, but came across a few I liked.

The bee and flower together turned out great. A lot of DOF at f/16, and yet the background is far enough away to make the subject really stand out. Well thought out composition.

LOL - I was chasing an emerald bee around a crepe myrtle with an extension tube and my 70-200 2.8.....My wife giggled and shook her head
Chasing a butterfly to catch it with the wings open with a similar rig on our sidewalk.... My wife laughed out loud enough for the neighbors to take notice.

Bee in flight shots are always hard. This is from the same morning as the other one.

I'm not a bee nut or anything, but I take advantage of what is there :)

Thanks....actually your butterfly inspired me to go out with macro ... I had not used it for a while:)

What I like about macro is how versatile the subjects can be. I enjoy a nice scenic landscape type image, but there are not a lot of opportunities within a 1 1/2 hour drive. The ones there are I've gone to several times.

There's a great garden 20 minutes from my house that changes as the season progresses. I can go one week and the next week and get shots that are quite different. It's hard to do that with general subject photography.
