Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing a new lens for photograghing horse racing.

I own a Canon 450D.

My budget is around £600 ($1000) but I can look to save extra if suggestions state that this would be advantageous.

I'm seriously considering the Canon 70-200 F4 L USM for the money but it wouldbe greatto here everyones suggestions.

Regards

Andrew

George Slusher, a valued forum member here, photographs a lot of equestrian events and has been published in horse magazines. Hopefully he'll post here when he gets the time. If I recall correctly, he mostly uses the 70-200 f/2.8 L IS (£1500), but it's sometimes not wide enough on a crop camera.

I think 70-200 F/4L would be fine for what you want to shoot. It's a very very good lens.. perfect for daylight outdoor shoots. It's very light (compared to its f/2.8 cousins).

Thanks for the advice gents.

I'm thinking the 70-200 F/4 LLens would be a good start. I can always trade up to the F2.8 at a later date.

Thanks for your comments.

By "horse racing," do you mean outdoor track racing? You aren't talking about indoor barrel racing or anything, are you?

OH, OH OH!!! the EF 200mm f/2 IS USM !!!

Mmmm... what a nice lens that is! (alternatively, the EF 135 f/2 USM is much smaller, lighter, and less expensive, and not much wider in focal length so it makes a great alternative and would fit into your $1000 budget, though just barely. The other is like a few times more expensive)

[:D] I would love to try the 200mm f/2 some day.

Oh it's a SEXY lens! On my website: www.freshphotohawaii.com if you look at the football game of Wisconsin vs Hawaii, you'll see those were taken with the 200 f/2 (I think a FEW were taken with a 400 2.8 because my friend wanted to try the 200 f/2 so we switched for like ten minutes)
