I don't know if we have a sub-set of the community that has taken pictures of planes at airshows and the like. I would be interested in seeing your pictures if you have. I unfortunately have not had the chance, yet.

I am going to Oshkosh this summer for the airshow there to take pictures, which I will post when I get them, till then lets see yours!

Heyy! I havent been to any airshows but i live ded close to an airport so every now and again i go down there and take some shots I tend to prefer shooting in black and white because it shows off the reflections in thefuselagebetter. :)

I've shot thousands. My son love air shows. He is the main reason I even own the 100-400.

Here's a few. I should have used a slower shutter on the P-51.

And now to throw a technical question at all of you. As I mentioned, I want to go to Oshkosh this summer to the airshow there. I don't know what conditions will be as in distance etc. I currently don't own anything longer than 150mm, so I am looking to use it as an excuse for glass. the 100-400L is a little pricey, but I might be able to stretch to it, other wise Sigma has 150-500, 100-300 f/4, 120-400. The 1-300 doesn't have IS/OS. So, I have a set of questions:

1)what focal lengths do you find yourselves using? maxxed out to 400, or closer in?

2) do you sit at wide open, or tend to stop down a little?

3) Is IS a big factor in your shooting?

Thanks guys

I do not shoot at airshows but I have heard that 400mm is often too close. I think the Canon 70-200 IS f/4 would be a nice choice. If not, the 100-400 is a nice choice too. IS is HUGE for airshows, especially Mode 2 (panning mode). I wouldn't consider a non-IS lens.

I use the 100-400. It feels like it was designed with air shows in mind with push pull zoom. 70-200 is too short in my opinion especially for jets.

I use the whole zoom range and I usually shoot in Tv mode at 1/500. Prop planes, If I remember, I try to switch to about 1/125 or 1/250 with the IS in mode 2. Jets I turn IS off.

Nope it sure ain't to long! At least not to the shows I've been. I used my 70-200 f4L non IS. And the only thing I have to say is that 200mm is way to short a lot of the times, have to crop a lot. Here shows are often above the entire runway, so there's a line of people for like 1,5 mile? For that matter the show is based on mostly the center part, but also in the length of the runway. When I check other peoples stuff there...really it's like a photography toystore at those days [:P] The most common lens is the 100-400. Yes sometimes 400mm is a little too long, but therefor the versatility of the 100-400 is at hand. I don't see a real big difference in keeper rate if your max zoomed out is 100mm in stead of 70. Then again, this is in Europe with pretty strict regulations, so where you live they could hoover over your head, I don't know :P

I would recommend the 100-400 for a crop body. Even for a full-frame.

About IS...well I always did without. Shutterspeed is mostly not an issue when shooting high in the sky. Also a little iso like 800 max isn't really that bad on an airplane as well. I'll post some of my shots later, and will check on settings as well.

Larry...your picture of the T-28C is really kicking some serious butt! I love it!

Oh...and Whatsreal, you can also rent a lens for a day. It's cheaper than buying a lens you might not use much after the show. That's what I do this year [Y]

I'll be back with some pictures hopefully later this week [:D]don't get too excited, they're not worth it compared to some shots here [:P]

yeah but as I said its an excellent *excuse* to get some more glass! That is part of the reason for wanting a zoom, it would prove useful to have. I love to go to the botanic garden and being able to chase birds and insects a little would be fun. (though maybe I should stick to my macro for those insects.

hehe I stand corrected! I never thought about the push-pull being beneficiary for airshows, many (including me) don't like it.

Itheone, again, very nice job.

calmars,

These forums are 800 pixels wide so if you re-upload those shots at that width then they will fit perfectly.

Everyone,

These shots are amazing! Are a lot of them shot in burst to get the right position are are single shots enough? What about cropping? Is it enough to fill in when you don't quite fill the frame the way it might be desired? (especially if you were to get the 70-200 because that lens is super useful in more day to day circumstances than 100-400 on a crop body especially. That may just be an amateur's opinion.) Also has anyone been to Oshkosh or a similar show where there are a bizillion people crowding out the airport? What kind of distance to subjects are we talking about here in the US?

Thanks,

Samuel

Hihi nice excuse yes, but if a 100-400 is really useful in the average day of life..I doubt it. Then you're probably better of spending just a little more and buying a 70-200 F2.8IS USM or the F4 version. But for insects, birds and flowers you might want to check out the 300mm F4L. Maybe even with an 1.4x teleconverter.

Really you can have a good excuse to buy a lens, but you'll regret it if you can't really use the lens as much as you want to. I sold my 70-200 because I don't use it as much as I used to. I'm better of renting a telelens when I need it. Proves to be cheaper after all. At least for me.

Here's my contribution. All shot with a 50D and a 70-200 F4L

First off: The A10, first time I've ever seen this airplane in real life! Love it...it's a beautiful plane!

http://www.fruityview.nl/tdp/volkel1.jpg

Shot at 200mm iso200 1/1000 TVmode with +1exposure

The rest of my pictures are shot in AV with +1 exposure with center-point metering mode.

http://www.fruityview.nl/tdp/volkel2.jpg

200mm F5 1/4000 iso 250 /// 200mm and still needed cropping

http://www.fruityview.nl/tdp/volkel3.jpg

188mm iso 250 f5 1/1600 also needed some crop

And two pictures to show you how the majority of my pictures looks like at 200mm non-cropped. I was standing about 75m away from the runway with all pictures.

http://www.fruityview.nl/tdp/volkel4.jpg

F5 iso250 1/1000

http://www.fruityview.nl/tdp/volkel5.jpg

f5 1/2000 iso 250

I used AV-mode this much because the sky was really cloudy and 1 moment it could be cloudy and the other moment it could be clear. So I set my AVmode +1 exposure.

Haven't done any postprocessing on the last 3.

Not so much on the first 2 either, but yes they have been postprocessed.

Oh..there was a question about bursting... I didn't use my bursts a lot. Only when two or more planes are flying straight into eachother and you want to take that special moment where they seem so collide.

For the rest...they aren't that fast from such a distance [:P] you don't need to burst most of the time. I did take multiple shots sometimes, just for composition.

LOL.... I couldn't resist posting the high-G turn with the vapor rolling of the leading edge. The shock rings in the exhaust are cool too. These are the things that really remind me of the awesome power that these aircraft have. Praise God they're on our side.

Forgot to add in my post what great photos folks are posting here.

The B25 by freelanceshots and the A10 by Itheone are two of my favs. I have a similar A10 shot that I'm fond of. I've got quite a few excellent B25 shots but nothing that comes close to that one by freelanceshots. I love the atmosphere.

Hey Chuck, I noticed the photos are all 70-200 + 1.4 TC. Do you find this to be a good combo even on the extreme end of the range? As I noted above I am trying to figure out what to do for this summer's oshkosh trip. I imagine that the 70-200 2.8 IS will bottom out price wise soon, as some will be upgrading and others holding out for the new II. I might be able to afford it and a TC instead of a 100-400L.

Awesome photos by the way.

Do you find this to be a good combo even on the extreme end of the range?

Thanks Dan.

Just to clarify, I am using an old 70-200 f2.8L (non-IS) with the white "pro" 1.4 TC by Tamron.

I would say this combination is adequate for this kind of photography. It works really well on my 40D stopped down (f6.3- f8) but absolutely stinks on my FF 5D. I would love to own a 100-400 L. Obviously, If choosing between the two I'd still take the 70-200 and use the 1.4 TC for extra reach. The 70-200 by itself is irreplaceable. I hear the f4 version is as beloved. I've seen mixed reviews on using even the Canon 1.4TC with the 70-200. 2XTC is out of the question. The TC's seem to work much better on the primes of as long and longer focal lengths. I don't know if this is helpful, but it's what I have. Bryan shows ISO charts of the telephotos with TCs mounted. Here ("http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=242&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLIComp=0& APIComp=0&LensComp=0&CameraComp=0&SampleComp=0&FLI =5&API=0)70-200 f2.8L IS USM with 1.4 TC @ 280mm

I also use the Tamron 1.4 TC with my EF 100 f2.8 Macro. On the 40D I get 140 x 1.6 for a whopping 35mm equiv. 224mm1.4:1 Macro with no lost DOF. You can not use the Canon TC on the EF 100 f2.8. This combo also gives me a 140mm f4 prime to use on my 5D. Dang... I need to go take some pictures and try that out. Thanks for that idea Dan!! I love this forum!

Good Luck with your buying decisions. It's never easy.

Thanks for that link! I didn't realize Bryan had the TCs mounted on the lenses. The 70-200 works well with the 1.4 at equivalent focal lengths to the 100-400, not quite as well, but not bad. I was excited to see the 150-500 Sigma and 80-400 Sigma (I was hoping that the 120-400 and 100-300 f/4 Sigmas were on there, but they weren't). But as soon as I looked at the comparisons I was sorely dissapointed. I guess there is nothing to compete seriously with canon's 100-400L! Thanks again, I'll keep looking at it.

That is really cool! You are still allowed to take pictures at US airports? or were you there in some official capacity? Really, really neat pictures. It is the only wide-body I haven't been on. I have been on Boeing's 747, 767, 777, and the Airbus 320 and 340 but not this one yet.

I'm unaware of any laws prohibiting pic taking at the US airports Dan, though security was high and there were a couple of State Troopers at the location I was shooting from for the ground shot....no issues.

The pic of the A380 landing was taken from a pier across the channel from the airport....on this occasion, about the best spot for distance, approach angleand a "non-official" photographer.

I too have had thepleasure of being on those Boeings and more, the Airbuses, as well asLockheeds, but my favorite is a DC3 a few years back andalso my first flying experience a long time ago. Trivial factoid....the hanger in the back leftof the 2nd photo is where I started my career over 30 years ago....no, I wasn't paid to fly airplanes.

Great shots Jim and Rich! Thanks for the comment Rich, it's also still one of my favorites. I've actually never seen an A-10 in flight. They don't come to the Netherlands that often unfortunately.

This year the Dutch Airshow was at Gilze-Rijen AB and I rented a 7D and 100-400 for this day. Unfortunately the weather really sucked(grey is keyword) and the 7D was not working with me. (worse photos ever, 9/10 where very soft the other 1 was acceptably soft [:P]The 100-400 proved much better on my 5D even with it's slower AF, next time better) I shot on AV-mode because the weather and lightingconditions were changing constantly. There was 1 show where the camera didn't even focus at all since it was a plain grey sky with a plain grey plane in front of it [:O]

Also the flares seemed to be a big problem for the AF, everytime they used flares my AF flipped and I got nothing more than some nice bokeh [:P]

Anyway there are a few I want to show.

Great shots everyone!

Jan, going to the previous page, do they regularly blow up your country side at airshows? [:)]

Well there's only one show nationwide and it's only 1 time a year, 2 days, but twice the same or almost the same program. There are 250.000 visitors when you sum up both days. And yes every year they blow stuff up. Of course these detonated explosions, but they are kind of big anyway. It's all part of a show called "Airpower Demo". It's a Dutch show where they stage the attack on enemy ground forces. So first there will be 2 "scout" F-16s flying across from both sides at maximum speed(of course they have to limit on these days [:P]) ...explosions... After that some apache choppers will cover ground...rounds of gunfire and explosions... Then Some troops and supplies get dropped by Cougars and Chinooks and "the enemy"gets arrested or whatever. After that a transportation plane, mostly Hercules, drops in to fly troops and equipment out. Choppers get out and at last the Apaches leave.

Anyway it's a pretty cool thing to watch with a lot of noise and big explosions, but I still prefer the solo-demos and teamdemonstrations.

It's also very very hard to get to the front to watch this all, because it's massively popular among children and really everyone else [:P]

http://www.fruityview.nl/tdp/airshow9.jpg

And I just wanted to show you guys this:

http://www.fruityview.nl/tdp/airshow8.jpg

There are a lot of people walking with amazing gear on these days. I mean a 100-400 isn't noticed anymore between all the big white lenses, but this one wasn't ignorable [:P]

Hi Jim,

Thanks for resurrecting this thread! I really liked your second photo, the contrast and resolution of the plane against that dark blue sky looks amazing. I had a Circular Polarizing filter with me but I didn't use it. I think I'll try it next year.

Did you have a chance to compare any shots with and without the filter? I struggled shooting into the bright sunlight most of the day.

Hi Jan,

Thanks for the comment as well. I liked your third (Jet-Wash) and the last two pictures best, surprisingly the gray skies in your last 2 shots works for me. I think the darker gray skies adds some mystery, as opposed to a light gray blown out sky. Did you play up the darker gray sky in post proceesing, because I like the effect.

I'm surprised that you had problems focusing with the 7D, besides the flare problems, perhaps there was a defect, or a setting miscue in the autofocus, because I have to say that my aouto focus hits on the 7D were about 95 out of 100 successful.

Nope all my photos are straight of camera since I can't really enjoy editing them [:P] The contrasty sky also works for me. Those 2 are about the only 2 photos the entire day where I didn't mind the grey sky [:#]

Yea well I'll never know cause it was a rental, but I my expectations where thrown down the drain that's for sure. Next year I'll probably rent a 100-400 or a 400mm+ prime on my 5D. And well I can't blame the camera for the flare-problem. I can imagine that happen, but it's annoying [:P] Anyway I'm up for some new photos!

jan, i like the shots you took with the gray sky, especially the couger and the jordanians, the dark and light really sets off the contrast and gives it an eerie aura that i really like.[;)]

mike, your 2nd shot of marine one is great[:P], i love the sniper team on the roof in the background, lets you know its really obama in the blackhawk.

richard..thanks for the praise [:D], that B-25 shot is one of my favorites from that days shooting, i shot a whole string of him flying by, and that one was the best shot by far, and no, i didnt take the polarizer off all morning i was there, so i didnt have a chance to compare, but, depending on which way i was facing in the sky relative to the suns position, the sky changed shades quite drastically, and that was without me rotating my filter, but i agree, the dark blue sky definatly lookes great behind the B-25.

That's quite classy of that guy with the big lens. He might as well hire a guy to hold it up for him haha.

Thanks jim! I was talking with RCMP officers about sniper teams and he told me they were all over the place and that he would give me $20 if I could find 5 of them... I searched for a while from inside the building where I took the Marine1 shots (9th floor overlooking the convention centre) and only found 2 after like an hours worth of shooting and viewing...

I love the flex in the rotorblades in the shots as well, it stands out more in the 1st one. It continues to amaze me how strong and amazing aeronautical stuff is... tear...

It's actually an 800mm on a 1Ds3. He was handholding it all the time...but I still think most of the times 800mm was a bit too long. Especially with the hazy sky ruining the more distant shots. I'm thinking of renting a 400 or 500mm prime next year. That focal distance should be great for 9/10 shots...

Btw I didn't even notice the Sniper team the first time I saw the picture...[A]

Hey Rod,

Those pics are awesome! I picked out my favorites above and I especially love the first one, with that High Speed Pass.., breaking the sound barrier and creating all of that vapor. The blue angels look great too, with very true blue and yellow colors and that beautiful blue sky. The only thing I would add, would be to leave a little more space in front of the planes when you crop or compose the shot.

Sheiky, thanks and glad u liked the picts...Ive been to 3 great air shows this year and keep missin this shot bad because of weather and just being so into the show i forgot to set up my cam for the shot lol...This was by far the best airshow ive ever been to and we went to virginia beach on wed and the whole week was just a lot of fun with all the jets flying arround the beach and a lot of navy ships crusin by (even got to see a aircraft carrier go by ).. My only complaint besides the traffic lol was i wanted to see the f-22 raptor demo so bad but when the f-22 started its demo it made 1 pass and just flew off, they later told us the jet hade 2 warrning lights come on in the cock pit so for safty they hade to fly back to there base..Oh well better to be safe i guess theres allways next year lol..Then did i night show on fri night at sunset that was amazing and on sat night on the beach did a f-18 superhornet full on afterburner fly by that was just cool ( i got picts of it but i had a lot of noise in the picts because it was dark out ) ill post 1 see what ya think... once again thanks and glad u enjoyed the picts Rod

Sounds like you saw quite some action. Very cool. I'm curious to the sunset-shots. I imagine they are hard to shoot, but I like the idea.

Wow Dan! That airshow looks very cool and a whole lot different than the one Rod went to. I absolutely love the big formation of props. I like all those props. They show so much action which is a lot harder to capture on a jetfighter. Very nice, thanks for showing.

Sorry Rod, I never saw these shots untill now. I really like the lighting on the F-18s. Those nightpictures are pretty cool! Love to do something like that sometime.

Anyway, let's kick some life into this thread again. Last weekend I visited the Dutch Air Force show in Leeuwarden. It was great, we had very nice weather(unlike pretty much every other year)

I had rented the 400mm f2.8L and it was simply awesome. Enough talking, here are 4 shots that I quickly selected. Hopefully more will follow later on.

Great shots Jan, I especially love the glowing engine and open bomb doors on that Belgian f-16. The colors, contrast and sharpness look great!

What a great combo between the 400mm f/2.8 and the 5DII.

Blue Angels performing at the Navy Pier. We were in Hancock Tower and didn't know they were performing. That's the (former) Sears Tower in the background. Right place, right time, wrong lens.

Thunderbirds at Joint Service Open House (Andrews AFB). I've been trying to get some decent air show shots for the last 15 years -- tough, if you don't go often. The 70-200 works if you're up front.

Yeah, and they're still doing the same thing year after year. Same show in 2000... Same show in 2011.
