Hi all,

I'm a new addition to the forum (and thanks to Bryan for the invite!).

Has anyone heard of any rumors for a potential replacement for the 100-400 L? They keep popping up on and off on the net with these apparent changes: traditional zoom ring, a bit faster on the wide end (i.e., 4-5.6), latest IS, and most likely weather-sealed. But, no concrete info on it yet. Anyone heard anything?

Canon already came out with it, didn't you hear?

It's called the 70-200 f/4 L IS with 1.4X TC. Traditional zoom ring, latest IS, weather sealed, etc. Pity they lost 100mm on the long end, though.

;)

Seriously, that is what I'm using and if you can make do with just 300mm, it's great. The image quality is every bit as good.

Here's Bryan's comparison. ("http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=113&Camera=9&Sample=0&FLI=3&API=1& LensComp=404&CameraComp=9&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=5&A PIComp=0)

Hi Dan,

:-)

Yeah, I have the 70-200 f/4 L IS too. Awesome lens. I never stop being amazed by the quality of the shots I take with it... And its performance even with the 1.4x TC looks very impressive indeed. Maybe, I should get my act together and invest on the 1.4x TC. But, of course, imagine the 100-400 with the TC. :-)

Happy Shooting,

Tony

I agree Daniel. I did a direct comparison and thought the 70-200 f4 + 1.4 was sharper than the 100-400 at 280. Even cropped to the same image size as the 100-400 at 400mm was better. So, I went with the 70-200 + 1.4. I got the bonus of a great 70-200 lens! I'll know more after the track and field season this spring; the shots on the far side of the track are a better angle from the stands than on the close side. My old 70-300 was adequate but the 70-200 + 1.4 will be much better.

Canon rumors recently posted that it may be anounced in a few months (http://www.canonrumors.com/2008/12/ef-100-400-f4-56l-is-cr2/). No idea how reliable this informaion is. My 100-400L still works remakably well though.
