Has anyone tried this combo? How is the image quality? If you have any pictures, would you mind posting them so I can check it out?
I have been thinking about purchasing the extender, but needed to check andsee if it would be worth the purchase with my current lenses. I don't have anything longer than the 100mm macroand didn't know if just purchasing the extender can get me by until I get one of the 70-200L zooms. Thanks.

The Canon 1.4x will not work with the 100mm macro. If your looking to increase your effective magnification you may want to look into tubes, unless your trying to keep a distance from your subject--in which case a Kenko pro or Tamron 1.4x TC will do. FWIW, Both Tamron and Kenko pro 1.4x TC's perform just as well as the Canon 1.4xII--only if you need weather sealing (which requires a 1-series body and weather sealed lens) would I recommend the Canon version over the other two.

Thank you. I wasn't sure if it worked or not, so I thought I would ask. I assume the Tamron or Kenko gives roughly the same IQ that you would get with the Canon version???

You can use the Canon 1.4x with the Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens if
you put a section of extension tube between the 1.4x and the camera
lens. I do it all the time with various sections of the Kenko
extension tube 3 piece kit. IQ is still very good, provided all the
other fundamentals are executed well. Just bear in mind that extra
magnification will further reduce an already shallow DOF. To the
second question, there is no glass in an extension tube so there is no
difference in IQ between tube brands. I am very pleased with Kenko

The 1.4x extender does not reduce DOF if the framing is the same, only when you go beyond 1x magnification, and even then, DOF is the same as it would be if you got that magnification some other way (eg, with a 65mm 5x macro or with extension tubes).
I'm not disputing what Don says, just clarifying.
I also use the 1x macro this way.

Thanks Jon, my statement was based on the premise that the reason you'd want to use the1.4x was more magnification which results in tighter framing. But technically you are correct, the same frame at the same aperature results in the same DOF regardless of focal length of the lense that you got there.
