View Full Version : Assignment 13: Vertical Compositions -- Congratulations elmo_2006
Dan Fleming

Congratulations Jonathan Huyer on the last assignment! He has quickly gotten a subject in for the next assignment so here is the thread for Assignment 13: Vertical Compositions. Jon's description is below.
"For the next assignment, how about vertical compositions (i.e., portrait rather than landscape)? The photo should be one that is a 'natural' fit for a vertical orientation. The main reason I have chosen this assignment is because I have approximately zero such shots in my collection... I almost always shoot in the horizontal! I'm looking forward to getting inspired by your submissions once again."

It just seems to make sense to shoot waterfalls in portrait. I can't decide which I like best.

Mattsartin, this is a very nice shot, I like it very much!
I like the nature lighting(window?), rich color and contrast, but the best part of this shot is the well controlled DOF and the vibrating strings(are they?)[Y]
have you tried different shutter speed and how did they look like if so?

Wow this is a hard assignment, great submissions so far!...To be honest I have quite a few shots in vertical composition. However they all seem naturally that way, the obvious portraits etc. And so I had a hard time selecting one. Perhaps I'll change my mind later on..

Lighting was fluorescent lights above, not vibrating strings though, just how it turned out lol. That's the only shutter speed I recall trying, I usually shoot in Av and adjust ISO to control the DOF, thanks for the compliments though :)
<div style="clear: both;"]</div>
I thought you need speed to catch the vibrating strings, if not so, why not lower your ISO a bit cause I see a little noisy in the background. ISO doesn't effect the DOF right?
Here is my contributions. I tried to capture the vertical assignment last week-end, but ended with a vertical-diagonal picture. Hope you like it.

The strings weren't vibrating at all the guitar was just lying on the table (a ping pong table at that lol), I used a higher ISO because of the lowlight, the lens was already wide open and I didn't have a flash to use, ISO wouldn't affect the DOF on its own. Only if you raised the ISO to have a narrower f-stop.
<div style="clear: both;"]</div>
since the guitar and strings didn't move at all, why didn't you use slower shutter speed so you can lower you ISO to reduce noise? in your case, you can use 1/25/f2.8/ISO200 instead of 1/100/f2.8/ISO800, the DOF will be the same. maybe you had to hand hold your camera?
Fast Glass
10-11-2010, 03:25 AM
ISO does not affect DOF, it is purely a function of the camera's sensetivityto light.
I still don't were this misconception came from, you raise ISOof thecamera not the lens. I never saw the lens close it's aperture when I raise the ISO.[^o)]

I was hand holding, I realize the camera would change ISO, just attempting to explain that ISO would only need to be increased if wanting to use a narrower f-stop in a low light situation. If I had a tripod handy i would

Kayaker, I really like the colors on those sailboat shots you have.
And Steve, good luck! That 1st shot looks great, but also very weird. Was the alley that tilted? Or is it a lens feature?
Here goes another from the week-end. Hope you like it. C & C is always welcome.

If only I had a tilt shift, or was better at CS4, I haven't learnt how to correct the converging verticals yet. But it sort of works in a narrow alley. I had an image in my mind of what a bleak, wet lonely alley shot in prtrait should look like, but I got wet and cold pretty quick so this one had to do.
Thanks for the comments.

I can also see why you shot that alley this way. I was just wondering why it looked like that. Have you tried lenscorrection? I

Thanks Bob - she's actually on the inside this time. I posted a similar photo a few weeks ago and she was on the outside and the screen made less of an impact.

Hi everyone -
I'm hugely impressed with the quality and quantity of photos submitted thus far for this assignment. The original deadline for posting has now passed, but since we didn't issue a formal last call until now, perhaps we can let it slide for another day or two. If anyone was intending to make a submission but hasn't gotten around to it yet, please do so ASAP. I am relatively new to this, but I think it's my job to choose the finalists, am I correct? That is going to be a very tough challenge... please don't be offended if I don't choose your favourite shot, because they are all superb. Meanwhile, I am going tolearn fromthe techniques I've seen here, and try vertical shooting a lot more for myself!
Thanks,
Jonathan

Yes it is. It used to be with 1 other judge, but nowadays the winner of the previous assignment makes the new one and judges over it.
We tried to put it down to 5/6 finalists, so the list wasn't getting too big. Also the first shot that someone posts counts. So if they submitted 5, that's fine, but the first one counted as the only one. It's more fair to the others that only send in 1 [;)]
I'm not sure if these rules still apply. Contact Dan for the "official" guidelines [:D]

I thought they could post multiple picsbut they had to specify which they wanted to submit?

Hi. Please letus know if we need to designate which ofour pictures is the official "entry". At least for me, I didn't know of that rule (yep, pleadin' ignorance[:P]) so the "first" was actually chronological, not by preference.
Thanks,
Brant

Okay since I get to play the role of judge, jury, and executioner for this assignment, I will say that all entries count. So don't worry about specifying your favourite. However, I won't pick more than one photo from any one individual for the shortlist. Maybe for the next assignment, the new judge can spell out in advance how it is going to work. Since I didn't know any better, I left it wide open.
If it's safe to do so, I'd like to now officially close the assignment to further entries. Please give me another day or so to mull through the myriad of amazing offerings, and put the shortlist together.
Thanks again,
Jonathan

That's a good call Jonathan. I think the rules should be posted in the initial first thread of the assignment. I hope that will also be the case next assignment [A] If not I'm going to post every single picture that I have next time [6] Nah kidding, I think I will limit myself to about 1000 photos then [;)]
Right....good luck putting your favorites together! [Y]

I selected a half-dozen finalists and passed them along to Dan (he kindly offered to set up the poll). There were many great submissions, but in order to make the list, I tried to select photos that were great primarily because they were in the vertical format. Photos that would also have been great in horizontal format were scored lower. I know that sounds a little unfair but that was the original intent of this assignment... to use the vertical format to create a compelling image, that would not have worked any other way. Good luck everyone, and thanks very much for your participation. I'm already looking forward to the next assignment (which I don't have to judge --- yay!).
