View Full Version : Assignment 15: Motion Blur -- Congratulations Sean Setters

I think freelanceshots, our winner from Assignment 14, has said it best, so here are his words:

I was thinking of a contest where the submitted images would need to have some part of the image with motion blur and another part of the image in sharp focus. The way for people to do this is to use a slower shutter speed fast enough to capture the subject but blur other objects moving faster. Another example is using a tripod with really low shutter speeds but capture unmovable objects as still images. Another technique is to pan with an object and blur everything else not moving with the subject. Another example could be painting with light where you use a slow shutter and a flash on the second curtain and move a light source around to create text or shapes or even more.

Here is an example from my Flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/freelanceshots/3565104702/in/set-72157623614232129 ("http://www.flickr.com/photos/freelanceshots/3565104702/in/set-72157623614232129/)/

The Finalists

Sorry about this! Apparently lists of people were sent to me, and my email never delivered. Here are the finalists, poll is below

the child in the swing is really good because the background is so silky smooth and the child is in pretty good focus. Just overall very pleasing. Hopefully not heavily enhanced with the aid of the computer

Because its an original subject and artfully done

Sean Setters

Because it took effort above and beyond to get this shot and I like his color choice in WB to balance the color of the car and the background light plus the lighting setup in the car.

Alex Niedra

Because its just a cool, original image with unique shapes made by the waves. White balance was an interesting choice that added to the image presentation.

/resized-image.ashx/__size/550x0/__key/CommunityServer-Discussions-Components-Files/26/4555._5F00_MG_5F00_4060.jpg

Andy Stringer

Because of the precision to capture a wild tiger with a fast enough shutter to capture the head but still blur the body to show movement.

a completely still image would be boring. Could use some contrast and saturation which would make it more eye popping.

Awesome photo, freelanceshots!! Would you mind posting your EXIF data for that example. Usually in flickr that is available but not on this one.

Thanks!

Any fair makes for some interesting photos because of all the lights and action. Can't find the original photo to get the exif data. I believe it was shot with a 30D and maybe the 17-55 IS lens with a tripod. Shutter would have been slow like 1 sec and the f-stop maybe around f/8 with a low ISO.

There are all kinds of neat and creative things that can be done with what I've explained so everybody have fun with it where I can't wait to see what everybody comes up with.

This was after the 4th of July fireworks display. I was stuck on top of a parking garage with traffic backed up trying to leave so I decide to take some pics of the downtown area. If you look a little below the center, you can see where a kid with a giant glow/light stick walked through the frame [:D]

In retrospect the f/10 was a bad idea, but this was one of the first times I used panning.

Why do you say that? f/10 allowed you to use a pretty slow shutter speed (that provided a nice effect) at your lowest possible ISO setting. Any wider an aperture would have caused you to have to use a faster shutter speed - If this is what you wanted, ignore my post. In my opinion 1/40 sec. works nicely for your shot. Also, f/10 (on the Xsi) shouldn't affect your image quality due to diffraction.

Some simple shot of an afternoon summer storm, this week. The rain putting streaks across the image. We've had rain for a week and a half, totally over it.

<p style="text-align: left;"]I often have problem to understand modern art. I tried to represent it in this picture, where somebody is passing quickly, somebody is watching carefully to the objects, trying to understand them or contemplating. Other stays in groups and one gives comments. I liked the man with the hand in his head,I think he express my thinking: boh? [:^)]

**Small update**

Yesterday I contacted Freelanceshots about this and he already send me his list of favorites, so in theory we're good to go.

Unfortunately I had no time left to mail Dan Fleming, so I will do that now. Hopefully we'll hear back from him as soon as possible and hopefully he can make the poll himself.

Since the time-difference is present (it's almost 9 in the morning here and my college is about to start ;) ) it might take some time before the poll is online. Please be patient.

If Dan shouldn't be able to adjust the assignment for what reason possible, I will contact any of the other admins to do so. (starting with David [A])

Hopefully this update is of some use. You'll all be updated as soon as I know more.

Because of the precision to capture a wild tiger with a fast enough shutter to capture the head but still blur the body to show movement. A completely still image would be boring. Could use some contrast and saturation which would make it more eye popping.

I'm flattered that the judges included my shot, which was my first ever post here at TDP. Just to clarify, though, I have never seen a tiger in the wild. My subject was a lioness.

Thanks for the comments on contrast and saturation, Dan. The photography "expert" on the safari hated any sort of post-processing, and I was ridiculed at the time for saying that I sometimes increase saturation, so I left the image alone apart from a crop. Maybe the lesson here is to trust my own instincts. Just remember, folks, you're voting for the motion blur not the post processing!

Congratulations to the other finalists too, they are all excellent shots in different ways. It's great to see the different interpretations of the theme.

I too am flattered to have a shot selected as a finalist. The shot of the boy (my son) in the swing has no PP other than a curves adjustment. The almost impressionistic blurred background, I believe, is the result of shooting at 17mm from such close range to the subject. I was not expecting such a cool effect when I took the shot.

Congrats to the other finalists too. Fun assignment.

I'm sure the assignment will still be open when you get it back. In the meantime, consider it a great chance to work on your pre-visualization skills. [;)]

I remember sending my 5D Mark II in for warranty work, somthing internal had broken. I lasted 4 days before I broke down and bought a back up copy 5D Mark II I just couldn't be without.

Will you be able to make it Denise. Or have you already got the 5D Mark II in your basket at B&H?

Would it be wrong of us to start taking bets? I'd put the over/under at 5 days. [:P]

Nah, surely its not wrong. After all if it were us we would be in the same shape. You have to figure if she works this week it will help keep withdrawls at bay. As the weekend gets close not having a camera in hand will cause the shakes to start. I would take7 days, breaking down and ordering it sometime this comingweekend. I would havetaken 6 days, but B&H doesn't take orders on Saturday.

HA! HA! HA!

The 135L tapped me out for quite awhile so nope, no 5d mk II in my near future! [:(] Instead I have a lens that doesn't focus worth a darn! [:'(]

One thing I did do though ...this morning the sun was shining, the birds were singing so I ripped open a very well sealed box, took my 7d back out & thru on my 100-400mm & went outside to take photos ...& all the birds flew away! [:(]

I better get to the UPS store quick & then come home and re-new my appreciation for my Canon P&S!
