Infinity Compensation Mark

Any thoughts on how to use the infinity compensation mark on a Canon 100-400 lens?The manual indicatesthat it is used to compensate for temperature, but I am still not 100% clear how to use it. Thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I think what they're trying to say is that the mechanical focus setting might shift, so they allow you to focus 'beyond infinity', but the mark is where it will be most of the time.
