I don't get to do much landscape photography anymore but since it snowed and it wasn't just ice that fell from the sky I thought I'd trek outside and try to capture something unique.

+1....I really like that picture. Although, someday, I hope we have enough dynamic range so that can be captured with 1 picture. For now, I gotta learn more about HDR.

Even though scenes like this take the right equipment, time, planing plus the hiking I always get bored quickly after looking at them. Its a landscape, basically all you can say is wow , that's awesome or pretty. God really did all the work. I guess that's why I'm more of a action type photographer or someone who likes to capture changing elements. It requires more from the photographer in some aspects and I think that these added things/elements say more about the photographer then the picture. One thing about landscape stuff is its all been done many times before. I like to do stuff that's never been done before or that I have not seen at least. When it comes to HDR images that term makes my stomach turn where I guess its because so many people have distorted it and taken it beyond a photographic level. The use of subtle blending using layers is a must without the halo's around objects. That is the only way that I can get myself to look at a so called HDR image. The high definition stuff can still be considered a photograph and not a CG image if you don't over do it and in addition don't add other elements that weren't in the original photograph. Back in the film days folks would dodge and burn to bring light up and down on the photographic paper similar to the technique I'm trying to achieve. I took photography back in high school during the mid to late 80's and it did not sink in then because I guess I had no patience for the process.

Well to answer your question the best that I can "highlight tone priority" function allows the camera to capture more detail in the white areas where its easy to lose detail. The down side of this feature is it can usually create more noise in the darker areas plus its only available at a range of ISO settings which starts at 200. Can

A second image I shot which I like better. Did not combine any images for the final outcome where I like it better. It ended up leaving more of the reflections out of the water where I like the darker look.

Both are really nice, But I like the second one a lot more. The branch adds a lot IMO, it gives you more of a sense of being there.

Michigan is a great place to be during winter. There are so many photo oppertunities. I hope you do not mind if I share one, and I hope it is not boring.[;)]

Lets start a Winter Landscape thread. Seems like there's enough interest. I updated the title where it already looks like it was under the assignments section I think. I missed correctly identifying that area when I made the post.

Great thread! This is one of my favourite topics. But that's not a surprise, because as they say, up here we get 8 months of winter and 4 months of bad skiing. [;)]

Jonathan, what a wonderful image you captured. The foreground, midground, and background elements are so well composed. That sunrise has got me inspired to wake up early (one of these days)!

Joel, no need to apologize. Your image is just as inspiring.

Great job fellas, erno.

Thanks very much Damian and Erno. Yes, that's Mt. Rundle. The drive would be more like 1.5 hours from Calgary, but fortunately I started in Canmore so it was only 30 minutes away. Sunrise around the winter solstice is not until 8:45, so it's a very easy wake-up call.

Thinking of the thread, "The Story Behind the Shot", here's a wild story that goes with this photo: I nearly missed getting this shot, because I had to stop on the highway when I came across a pickup truck that was on fire. Actually, it was the cargo that was burning, and the cargo happened to be a load of wrapped Christmas presents (!). I have no idea what could have sparked the fire. I called 911 while the owners were frantically throwing burning presents out of the truck into the snow. Fortunately, they got the fire out, and everyone was okay, but the presents were a write-off. I then carried on to the lake, quickly composed this view, and had only about 5 minutes left to get the shot.

By the way Damian, your profile is great. Love it!

Alan where were those pictures taken? Geysers? Foutains? very cool

Alan

Southern Wisconsin. This guy sets up a huge area to display these sculptures. Water is pumped to the individual locations with above ground PVC piping. The larger piping brings water from a well pump, and the pressure from the pump squirts it out the top of several, narrow vertical tubes. Just a little spray comes up through the top of the narrow pipe. With the sub zero temps, this spray begins to freeze and forms these sculptures.

So the 8-16mm does work on 1.3 crop cameras, but wouldn't you be better off with the 12-24mm? It goes to 12mm; hasless vigeneting and less distortion.

I didn't know that the Sigma 8-16mm was a fish-eye on a 1.3 crop camera, that makes a lot more sense now. I thought the 8-16mm would just have a littlemore barrel distortion, but so much distortion to have a fish-eye effect.

I would be interested to see how much input you get in another thread. The process looks interesting, but I have had to buy similar products for projects I have constructed, I would think these prints would be rather expensive. They do offer a sample, maybe its worth ordering.

Edit: Min pricing for a 12 x 20 was $181 US
