Gatorland - Orlando, FL

I just got back from a family trip to Disney et al, and fortunately we took a half day at Orlando's oldest attraction: Gatorland. I don't care much for the gators, but the grounds have become a significant bird sanctuary, complete with a few rookeries. You can get pretty close such that a 500mm lens is not necessary in many cases. These shots were with a 7D and the EF 70-300L.

One poor bird didn't read the sign and got a little too close to a hungry gator. I missed the actual "chomp" but managed to capture a couple shots just afterwards. I can't figure out what kind of bird it was. Maybe a juvenile something? Anyone?

The bird looks like it is an Anhinga chick.

Aha! That makes sense. There are many Anhingas at Gatorland, and I have some other shots that show parts of the wing, which is black and white streaked. Thanks!

Great shots, that 70-300L looks as though it is working very well for you. How much does the 4 stop IS help when it gets a little gloomy? Have you pushed it tp those limits yet?

The IS is the best I have used and I am very happy with the lens. I get many keepers at 300mm and 1/30s if the subject is still. Sometimes even 1/15s.
