On behalf of our previous assignment winner Adrian Mandea: this assignment is all about color!

The idea is that we would like to see images where the color can be a subject by itself, something dramatic and powerful! A specific color, multiple colors, colorfulness, you name it! Good luck!

Here's a small example(a green one) to get the creative flow moving: 38 shades of green ("http://totallycoolpix.com/2011/09/38-shades-of-green/)

The following finalists have been selected:

Your 38 shades link doesn't appear to be working, but I'll assume it's the same as this page. ("http://nexusimages.blogspot.com/2011/09/38-shades-of-green.html)

It works for me. It is a pop-up though. Can that be the cause? And yes, different website but it's the same as your link. Thanks :)

Mmm, interesting topic. So many brightly coloured birds, butterflies, a few years' worth of dutch flowers, and a whole stack of orchids in Singapore Airport to choose from.

But in the end i've settled on this one, I can't go past the subtle different blues offset by the very iridescent-looking jellysquish. Taken at Blijdorp Zoo in Rotterdam (which translates as HappyTown Zoo, how quaint) earlier this year.

50mm f/1.8 ii @ f/1.8, iso200, 1/60s. Not much PP except for RAW conversion, colour saturation even at -1 because it looked too weird at default, and a bit of cloning specs of dust off the glass.

I finally have something I can enter that doesn't get put to shame by all of the great images in these contests!

First one is my entry.

I've decided to make this one my submission instead of the red corvette. Although, this one looks lots better IMO when viewed with flickr's black background ...

An assignment themed "color" this time of year fits perfectly - when I look around outside the colors of nature are really beautiful. My original idea was to find an autumn leaf against clear sky to get a red, green and blue composition (maybe it's a bad sign when RGB is the first that pops up in your head when you think of color). Last week I took a walk with my camera near my house but didn't really find any fitting leaf. Most leaves were either yellow or green - I wanted a red and green one. Some maples had these leaves but they couldn't be isolated to a blue sky background. (Who is this weird guy running around aiming his camera to the tree tops?) After a while the sun set and I gave up looking for leaves. Instead I was hooked by a spectacular show that took place over the sea - the post sunset colors of the sky shifted in various hues of pink/purple and of course I made sure to capture some photos. Actually I like this first one quite a lot and it will be my entry in this assignment.

(Still, I had the idea of the red and green leaf, and this Saturday I found one that was pretty much what I had in mind. The result is also similar to the picture I had in mind but I like the first one better. However, this is what my entry could have looked like.)

The smaller skink lizards come this way in the southern direction. To catch them takes extra special care because they will drop their tails at the slightest touch when scared. A tailless lizard is not as cool as one with its tail.

It was not really any effort. The software does it all, and does it well, if you want a large image with hundreds of input images. I had downloaded the trial a few days ago, because someone wanted me to make a collage. I tested it with a few hundred images, making collages that were big (like 2K, 4K and 8K wide) and thought it did a pretty good job, so it was fresh in mind. The collage software is only $25 ($45 commercial) and works great if you add tons of images. I thought it could make a nice large poster.

When I found out what collage I was actually being asked to make, just 6 images, I opted to do it manually in GIMP instead. Since Photoshop likely has the same options with different names, I'll repeat the steps here:

1. "Open as layers". Lets you choose a bunch of files, each opened on a new layer.
2. For each layer, resize layer, move
3. Move layers up and down to achieve wanted sorting.
4. Once vaguely laid out, for each layer rotate a bit.
5. Choose a nice border color as my background color, increase each layer's size by a few pixels (6 in my case), and offset by 3 (to center the images).
6. Choose each layer and filter/drop shadow, next layer, repeat filter.
7. Add a background layer with a gradient, and voila.

It was more work than pressing 'make collage', but you sort of need control of placement when dealing with just a few images.

That's my puppy, top center, surrounded by her brothers, all turning 1 next week.
