View Full Version : Assignment 26 - Sharpness
Sheiky
10-22-2011, 05:45 PM
For this assignment John (neuroanatomist) has selected the following subject: Sharpness!
Assignment description by John:
"No, not that kind (even though I don't mind staring at ISO 12233
charts!). The subject of this assignment is, literally, things that are
sharp. Subjects must have an edge or point that is able to cut or
pierce something. A few small examples below, one each from animal
(broad-winged hawk), vegetable (rose bush in the garden), and mineral
(Wüsthof bread knife)."
The following photos have been selected as favorites, it's now up to you to vote for the best!

Motivation: I like the colors and the use of negative space

Ok, I'll Start this one off with
Splitting hair (the blade is a Japanese Katana crafted between 1480 and 1500 and will still shave the hair on my arm)

I thought I was going to have to double-check the AFMA for all my lenses when I saw the subject, but I like your interpretation of sharpness, Neuro.
Good start, Bob. How big is that blade? Looks like it's sharp enough to cut your arm off, not just your hairs.
I'll try my luck with this prickly pear cactus from South Plaza island in the Galpagos.

I didn't want to go with the route of a macro shot for this assignment so how about a jet cutting through the air?

How big is that blade? Looks like it's sharp enough to cut your arm off, not just your hairs.
Andy, Its total length is 39 inches, exposed blade length is 27.5 inches and yes it would probably cut anything off of a human that you wanted to cut off---it probably already has:)

This is my first submittal on any website. I just started pursuing photography and thought these assignments will get the creative juices flowing.
<p sizset="0" sizcache="15"]Hi, this assignment made me remember a kind of strange period of tableware photography I had a couple of years ago. I went through the archives but didn't find anything I liked, so I took a new shot at it yesterday.

Lol, yeah Erno James was definitely going to win this assignment.
I'll try to fancy up the starting post and look into how the poll works on this one. I say let's give it a few days to settle down, I will contact Erno James(or he could contact me) for the next assignment, and we should be able to start fresh with a well deserved winner very soon. :D

That's correct. Most of the photos were hosted on this site. But with the new forum upgrade those photos are removed I think and so they do not show anymore in this thread.
Photos that are posted externally(like Flickr or own site) still do appear.
Before the forum migration Erno James was definitely the favorite in the poll, so in the next assignment we'll make things alright.

Well THAT was exciting! it took me almost a whole day to figure out how to reset my password to make this post. I think reading my Canon DSLR manual cover to cover was an easier task.
Hey, thanks for the kind comments on my shot taken of the sand dunes at Death Valley. Morning light made those dunes memorable for sure. As for the NEXT assignment, the topic will be.....GLASS. This one is open to interpretation; I am amazed at the creative minds that browse this site. To get us started, things like FAST glass, a BEER glass, or STAINED glass are but a sample of ideas. Happy shooting everyone! -Erno James

Hey, no your settings are ok. This is an old thread. Most of the pictures were hosted locally on the old forums. Since the forums were migrated to new software all those files have been removed. Unfortunately that's the case for a lot of photos on this forum now, not only on this thread.
The photos that were hosted elsewhere (Flickr, Picasa, own website etc) are still available.
Hope I informed you well enough.
