Around this timeevery year the Great Blue Herons of Bolsa Chica Ecological Reservestart to pair up and build their nest. There are many nesting sites in the erea but this couple builds their nest out in the open and gives photographers a great opportunity to photograph the courtship and eventually the chicks.[:)]

Great capture!

Not sure if that is love in their eyes though. Maybe a Fatal Attraction type thing.

Very nice.

I tend to use negative exposure compensation on sky to make it look bluer, but I notice you adjusted +2/3 stop, and it looks perfect.

Did you use a polarizer?

Great shot overall! any crops?

I will probably have used a narrower aperture (F8) forthis shot for absolute image quality (as it doesn't require background blur) and change down the ISO a little bit since there is still room for shutter to get slower. But this difference could behard to see even at 100% as the 400/5.6L is just good wide open.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Jon, no polarizer was used. When shooting against bright sky I usually adjust the compensation to +2/3 or 1 to have better exposure on the subject.[:D]

Ben, I cropped for artistic reason, this is 80% of original image. I don't see any difference regarding sharpness between f/5.6 and f/8.

As always, your bird shots are the best lol.

Can we see a tighter crop please?
