On behalf of Steve U the assignment is: A Stranger in Black & White

"Some people may find that a little confronting, but I hope not. Generally when I shoot an event and I take some candid shots of people I don't know, or posed shots in some cases, I leave feeling a little bit more like a "photographer" each time. So these photos can come from a parade, a festival, a sporting event, a street or in a park. It would be too easy for members just to convert a shot of your partner, child or pet to a B&W, hence the term "stranger". As we know candid shots of strangers can have an edgy quality to them and connection to the viewer that makes them even more poignant."

"Thank you to all that participated and embraced the subject of this assignment."

The following photos have been selected as finalists:

Name: ddt0725
Motivation: An intriguing portrait of an interesting subject, processed with Denise's professional artistic flair.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7106/6983484136_196d12f6b8_z.jpg

Name: w349
Motivation: This type of image unfortunately is a common scene in many places, w349 has captured the feel of this genre with incongruent class and elegance.

Name: cls
Motivation: This guy would be a walking story that we may not want to hear and this image hints at the chapters of his life, great capture.

http://community.the-digital-picture.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=982&d=1336075432

Name: nvitalephotography
Motivation: This one while a tiny bit voyeuristic I could see on a gallery wall, the processing is classy and we are invited, unseen, into this young ladies world.

Name: btaylor
Motivation: Technically a great shot, nails the brief, train stations are a haven for strangers and good B&W's.

All these were at a parade and just in a park, sporting events are very good for interesting images as well, as Jan said have fun with it.

But i'll have to try find someone new...

Fantastic choice for an assignment, Steve!!

It is suppose to rain here for about the next month so I don't know how much street shooting I will be doing. So, this will be my entry for now. I took it from my archives of Renaissance Fair photos and never did anything with it until now. I thought it may work well for this assignment after alittle B&W processing.

I don't believe she is an employee of the faire but a visitor

Hi, usually I prefer to submit new photos to the assignments (taken particularly for the assignment), but this time I have one in the archive that I think fits the assignment too well to be overlooked:

During a holiday trip last summer I was just walking around for some street photography when this man suddenly walked up to me and asked me to take a photo of him. This was the first (and so far only) time an adult stranger asked me to take a photo, and of course I did. I showed him the result on the LCD and he just did a thumbs up sign and left without a word (so I suppose he liked it). Maybe he disappointedly looked for his portrait in the local newspapers afterwards, but until now it has never been seen anywhere else than on my monitor.

I got the impression he was a friendly and happy dude, but most of all I think he has a very characteristic look that may not be categorized as beautiful, but still sort of photogenic.

I am useless at picking one image. Absolutely rubbish.

I'm going to go with THE SECOND one.

I'll edit this post to say otherwise if I've changed my mind.

But I'd also like to add this one to the thread:

Which would have been my selection, but I don't feel it's got enough about the stranger in it.

Great entries so far guys. Here's mine for this assignment.

Taken at Notting Hill Gate train station in London during December last year while waiting for the tube. I stopped down to f/11 with ISO 100 to try and get the shutter speed long enough to show the movement of the train coming in while still making it short enough for me to handhold and get a reasonable result.

I only learnt this a little while ago myself.
After you have selected and loaded your file from your computer, before you hit "reply", double click on the postage stamp sized image and another list of options come up.
You can then select the size that you want the image to appear at and then hit the reply button.
This process doesn't apply when uploading from Flickr as you size that as you go.

My entry remains the same above but I just wanted to share this one. Somewhat strange posting this photo on Mother's Day but I saw this man and his children having a picnic in the park yesterday. He twirled the two children around and around as they smiled and laughed with such delight! Personally, I was wondering how he managed to still be standing since he went around so many times! I was getting dizzy just watching!
As I look at this photo, the song "Dance with my Father" plays in my head!

Here is my entry. This is from my film days when I lived in Okinawa Japan. I loved to walk the streets and take photos of people. This little girl was scared:eek: of me and climbed on top a car. I shot this with my Yashica Matt 124G on Kodak Verichrome Pan 120, printed it on Ilford paper, bleached it, then died it with sepia the old fashioned way. My crummy scanner does not do this justice at all:(

I still feel not too confident pointing cameras at strangers, especially in Taipei people were so friendly and I did not want to harrass anyone. But it is fun.

The picture had even more going on uncropped, this is only 6.2MB out of 18.

I shot this one during our weekend camping in Luxembourg. By accident we drove by the start of the European Hill Race Eschdorf. I saw shiny and colorful cars and I had to check it out;) I had planned to shoot some street shots in Luxembourg city for this assignment, but we didn't end up there so now this is the most of strangers I have.

More fantastic shots - I love these assignments, they get me out to try things I never considered- Would love to replicate the train shot, might have to wait for Fringe festival to recreate Denise's shot.

When not behind the keyboard I'm deeply introverted so random pictures of strangers is out there for me- so no entry - but I will try and get some as a challenge

I have the same problem. Busy streets and hipshots are my saviour. That and walking with others who "have my back" if anyone got aggressive, because whilst I know self-defence, that doesn't help you talk your way out of a situation :D
