Thanks Pat. It is the same frame and same chair. You start out with the youngest and then print each picture and put it in the same frame for each successive shot with each person sitting in the same chair against the same background. Took us about 1 hour to complete the whole process.

Joel, I love the idea. I did something like this on a Xmas card a couple years ago and just used photoshop to put the picture in the picture. It worked out pretty well, but not as good as this shot. Great work.

Bob, good looking little guy! As for the dual catch lights I wouldn't have seen any problem keeping them in there. If you look at most of the photos around, you can see all types of catchlights. Maybe I am lazy, but I hate cloning out other catchlights so I just leave them. A note on the Apollo that I learned the hard way. Make sure it doesn't tumble because it does break really easily (personal experience here). Other than that, excellent softbox...especially if you use some form of Sean's extender arm to get the thing to tilt.

Don't do a lot of portraiture, but here's a few I took this weekend. Thankfully my son finally let me shoot him in his "cool" hat.

The colour version of the shot of my gf getting ready that I posted in the B&W Thread. When girls take so long to get ready, they can't really complain when we shoot them can they?

you would think that she actually was co-operating, however, that is impossible for a 1.5 year old. that is where the 8 FPS of the 7d comes in handy

Ham, great idea and funny anecdote. You and your gf should go out more often if the leads to more portraits.
Btw when are we going to see some landscapes? Didn't you move out of the city?

ham

Out of the city, into the suburbs. I've taken landscapes before, but they're always lacking something so I don't tend to share them.

Even though I have the big lights now, I still remember that the REALLY big lights still shouldn't be neglected. Large window behind me, camera right. Bounced flash off of the wall camera left.

I really like how you lit this Rocco. It draws my attention to the banjo more than the musician though (which is both fine and/or your intent :)). Did you use any different setups? Einsteins are hard to beat. Talk about bang for your buck!

Did you use any different setups?

I didn't. Just shot the one look. Didn't have very much time with him. For the most part it stayed pretty much like this. Boomed the speedlight to illuminate the hat though.

http://www.vierimagestudios.com/img/s8/v85/p1453299722-4.jpg

Towards the end I did feather the two einsteins behind him for a more edgy look. Kind of sinister. Was pleased with that one too.

Been unbelievably busy ever since I got these lights. Amazing how it put me back in creative mode.

Here are a couple from a session I'm editing right now. Taking a quick break. Two light setup, cross light, with my speedlight gelled with red, yellow, and cto in the fireplace to add the fire glow. flames were photoshopped in. Used the large soft box and 64" PLM with diffusion cloth.

Rocco - loving the new setup, superb shots mate.

We're well and truly into our world tour now, currently in New York before heading across to France. Had a couple of sneaky beers today and a brilliant little pub called McSorley's Old Ale House. This is Pepe and he pretty much epitomises New York for me, really lovely guy and he was nice enough to allow me to take his photo before we left the pub. Anyway, click the photo and read the flickr description for a bit more info.

Lighting is natural from the front window of the pub, it has been an overcast day so the light was nice and soft. I'm really enjoying the 35L, such a versatile little lens.

Take care everyone.

Thanks! There are two used. I had my 64" PLM with diffusion cloth set up for fill. I don't remember ratios or anything, but there wasn't much coming out of it. Main light had the white 22" beauty dish.

Thanks! His mom and me went back and forth on to remove it or not. We ended up deciding to leave it alone because its part of his character and it will probably be there for a while since it took sutures to close up.

@Marco

I like the shots. Studio lighting can be a lot of fun to work with.

For the lowkey shot I may have added a reflector on the far side to add a little of light to fill in the shadow across the face. Wouldn't be much but just enough to lighten up the eye and cheek bone a bit.

Here is one from a shoot I did last weekend. The Marine is getting shipped off to Afghanistan next month for his first tour of duty. They haven't actually had a wedding ceremony yet but they did get married at the court house. They plan to do that when he gets back.

This was shot with 6D, 1/100 sec, f/8, ISO 250 at 84mm on the 70-200 f/4. A 600EX-RT was camera left in an umbrella controlled via the ST-E3-RT on manual mode. I want to say it was 1/2 power but I don't remember exactly.

First try at newborn portraits, and what better subject than our new baby? :D

This is Sulien, born April 25th, 2013. He was 6 lbs 12 oz and 19.5" at birth...hard to believe he's already two weeks old! His first portrait shoot (of many) was on Tuesday, in an owl-patterned sleep sack and hat that my wife knitted.

Here are two shots from last week-end. I'm pretty happy but I'd be glad to get some comments :D

For the background, I put a white collapsible background with two speedlites on each side. Both in manual but at different power during the shoot.
For the foreground, I had a reflective umbrella with a single speedlite with 1/4 CTO just to add a tiny bit of warmth.

Both shots are 1/100s, f/5.6 @ 105mm (using the 24-105)

I'd guess you get more than 10 months summer, or atleast less than two months of winter. Perhaps 2 weeks winter, and 3 weeks each of fall and spring. Maybe it's colder up where you are than where my dad is.

My dad is near McAllen, TX, fairly south, near the Mexican border. One winter we visited him around Late Jan-Early Feb. We took a trip out to South Padre Island. It was 25C/77F, and we came home sunburned. I'm sure all the native Texans were in their warmest winter gear, but I consider that a warm summer day, despite it being in the middle of winter. In the mornings we could go out to the porch swing with a blanket, as it was like 14C/57F... I'd say that's a warm spring/fall day.

It sounds nice until you remember how hot the summer days are. ;)

Cool concept Jayson.

#1 seems a little washed out. For example, there is very little detail to her nose. Regarding the words, if you think she will be able to understand the meaning by looking at it, great. But the source of the words doesn't jump out at me.

#2...the vertical lines are a little "The Matrix" esque. I would do something to break up the vertical pattern and give definition to her chin.

Of course, not trying to be critical, just suggestions, as I think the idea is great...and a lot better than what I had planned....which...ahhh...thanks for the reminder...I need to work on something. ;)
