Yup, maybe I hurried to make a comment when I saw the counter at 999...;-)

I also decided to celebrate with posting a photo from the weekend. It's current, it's a bird and it's B/W. It's also kind of a portrait, but since I made the 1000th postinthis thread I decided to post it here.

I'm no good at post processing but I'm trying to learn. Last week I picked up a simple process for a softfocus effect that looks quite good on some older portraits. The problem is I've gothooked up on this look and apply it on lots of photos that would probably be better off without it. In this case I added just a little that I think goes well with the thoughtful swan.

I thought it was neat how the swiirling sand and pebbles in the water bore out these round holes in the rock, and then makes for some neat looking water falls.

Today was my first outing with my new 16-35mm zoom, but I spent most of the time dodging showers and waiting for the sun to come out, so not too many keepers. This was my favourite shot with the new lens.

Actually Joel, I like this shot---It has a tranquil feel to it.

Which reminds me---I have a little story that us nature photogs (and probably others) can appreciate----This is also a little teaser for Joel.

This last Saturday, Norma (my wife) and I decided to go to the Bosque del Apache on on a whim (3:00 pm). By the time we got there, it was 5:15pm with onlyabout anhour of light left. Well, we started our slow trek trek arounda 12 mile loop keeping a watchfull eye for the birds and wildlife. During that hour, we came upon several deer, canadian geese, snow geese, lots of ducks, pheasant, a few sandies, coyotes, hawks, and one very rude tourist and his family (i have evidence)---Now, I didn't get pics of all of the wildlife that we saw, but here are a few not-so-good shots of some of the wildlife and the very rude tourist.

Her is one that isn't great, but I really liked the light---the sun was just out of frame and there was a haze in the air (probably dust from the rude tourist)

http://rwilliamsimaging.com/img/s11/v29/p58242548-4.jpg

and one of a Canadian strutting his stuff

http://rwilliamsimaging.com/img/s11/v30/p194875616-4.jpg

and one that had potential---but the effort was short lived

http://rwilliamsimaging.com/img/s11/v31/p530993148-4.jpg

As I said---Short lived, because a rude tourist failed to respect the fact that I was leaning over the hood of my truck with a big white lens trying to work a shot of this herd of deer and decided to blow past me at about 30 MPH.........and this isthe rest of the story:

http://rwilliamsimaging.com/img/s11/v28/p404069795-4.jpg

To explain: most people who go to the Bosque del Apache, go there to observe or photograph wildlife and as such are normally very polite and very patient and willing to wait if they see someone stopped in the middle of the road looking at or photographing wildlife---But occasionally you have to deal with people like this. Needless to say, my time with the buck mule deer was short lived.

I'm still down with it .... will try firm up dates within the next 2-3 weeks if that's cool?

Thanks, Mark! So far, I am very happy. I haven't done any micro-adjusting with it yet but it doesn't appear it will need much, if any. I do want to do more continuous shooting with it today to make sure it will focus accurately 99% of the time.

From what I saw shooting outside with it yesterday, vignetting was pretty non-existent and chromatic aberration and purple fringing was really well controlled, or I should say better than some I have shot with. With that on the plus side, I like it much better than the Canon 50mm 1.4 I had. I did notice in post when using Camera Raw that it does have some significant distortion but Camera Raw does a good job with correcting it.

Went for a driveyesterday eveningchasing this storm. There was lightning bloody everywhere! There's been a heap of electrical storms around this week as we've had both dust storms and bush fires so the lightning's been amazing. It's a bit earlier in the year than normal for the storms to start so it looks like we're in for a big wet season. Will have another look and see what happens over the weekend.

The lighting in the foreground here was from a floodlight I have in the tray of my 4WD. I used the Canon 17-40mm here - needed quite a bit of distortion correction to get the post next to the gate reasonably straight so I lost a little of the image but I like how it came out. So far I'm enjoying the 17-40mm. I'm still craving something even wider though but until I can save up for a fast prime normal lens (possibly Canon 50mm f/1.2L or Sigma 85mm f/1.4) and the Canon 14mm f/2.8L I'll stick with this one.

Canon 5D Mark II, Canon 17-40mm f/4L @ ISO 400, 13sec exposure, f/5.0. Tripod mounted on Really Right Stuff TVC 34L. That reminds me - I'm supposed to do a review of that tripod for you. See what happens today.

Planted my first daylilies in the garden. I don't know much about them, but at $25 a pop, they better be special. This is the first flower of the first one, there are about 6 buds under this flower so it should look pretty impressive once they all come out. The colours certainly are very vibrant.

Thanks, the squirrel was around 60-70 feet away and the image is cropped probably 50% or so but with the 500mm + 1.4 TC on a 1.6 crop factor body you have 1120mm focal length effectively!

Ah great! Since you're mentioning this. My girlfriend and I were digging through the pile of holiday photos yesterday and here's two that I'd like to share. The intention is that we're done digging through all of them by the end of the week...fingers crossed, but it's about time ;)

These two photos were shot at the Vøringsfossen, a big waterfall in Norway. Well it's actually one very big waterfall which falls so hard that it's pushing another smaller waterfall on the other side back up again, which creates a huge amount of waterdroplets, which in order can create a nice rainbow.

My girlfriend is sitting half a meter off the edge were there's a 180m drop down. I also took a shot holding my camera over the edge and it was sketchy ;) Later that day we hiked down towards the waterfall, which was also great. Perhaps I'll share that later on ;)

It was still early enough in the fall season that the leaves were still staying on the trees. There are no leaves left around here anymore though.

I was wondering when we would be treated to some more of your shots from this trip, Jan. I love the composition of #1 with your 'pot of gold' at the end of the rainbow.
Thanks Andy. Today me and my girlfriend finished our album for the trip and we're done sorting all the photos finally ;) I don't mind adding a few random shots, but I can also make a small travel report. Not sure yet:rolleyes: I'm going to post on Flickr anyways;)

Sheiky - Love that sky. That is one of those skies that you see and you try to rush somewhere to egt a decent foreground before it disappears. Beautiful shot. Fall has been over around here for some time now... I just still have not gotten to all the pic's I took on my vacation at the end of Sept.

Thank you all for the nice comments.

A lot of my waterfall shots are pretty washed out because I did not get to a lot of them unit late morning or mid-day (there were other things I wanted to shot at sunrise and sunset). I only had a few days to get pictures before it started pouring rain out - that kind of ended things early for me this year. I do not mind rain... in fact, I kind of prefer a light rain or heavy overcast for the waterfalls, but this was to much.

Wow, nice rainbow. It's weird how the colours are different in, out, and between the rainbows (i noticed on a shot I took a while ago, thought my camera was being weird).

Meanwhile, I went for a walk yesterday, and this girl was just behind a tree about 3m from the path (these are uncropped 300mm and 207mm, 7D shots).
I've never seen a wild roo this close up before, normally they just run away (she had a huge joey in her pouch so probably couldn't jump).
(Domesticated roos don't count, that one I rode to school every day wasn't exactly 'wild').

I never noticed that. The color layering on the outer rainbow is inversed of the inner bow.

Pat, you've inspired me to post some water-blur shots of my own....thank you.

Shot on the mid-north coast of BC in Bella Coola. There was a huge flood there in Sept 2010 and out company was dispatched to oversee the flood clean-up works. I was lucky enough to have some time to shoot in this BEAUTIFUL part of BC.

This was one of the first water-blur shots I ever attempted. Comments and critiques welcome, of course. The tight shot was intentional.

5DII with 50 f/1.4 @f/11, 0.8s, ISO 50. I think I put my touque on a rock, set the camera down and set mirror lock up and 2 sec timer
Post processing in LR3 (warmed it up quite a bit). I have to say, I am quite addicted to water-blur. I love the contrast between motion and stillness (if that's a word..lol)

Damian - Looks really good. That must have been fast moving water to get that much blur at 0.8 sec exposure. I like that you improvised with no tripod... you have to make due with what you have. I was in Japan this fall and did not bring a tripod, and had to do the same thing to get some sunrise and waterfall shots.

I do like long exposures - the detail really comes out, and if you can get moving water in the shot, I think it just enhances things. I probably over do it, but I enjoy it.

Thanks for sharing.

Lancer - Nice beach shot. How high up were you when you took that shot?

Thanks Pat! Yes, compared to other streams i've shot this one was fast - water velocity about a meter per sec. Its a high-gradient straight-shot out of a very steep watershed. The surrounding mountains are ~3000m in elevation and feel like they right on top of you. Beautiful place.

Here are some from the DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge. I think these qualify as nature???? Little story behind these...the refuge where these were taken was under 10 feet of water last summer from the Missouri River flooding. Where there use to be miles of vegetation and wildlife, there is now a muddy mess. For example, I didn't notice most of the poison ivy hanging from some of the trees since they weren't covered with vegetation and were just the vines themselves. My friend pointed them out before I did any real damage to myself. Apparently the vines, even dead, still can give you a nasty case of the itchy scratchies for up to 5 years.

I love this shot! I wish I could find something other than the mama's and her babies but no luck yet!

I like baby shots, but it is still early in the year for those.

The best time to find the big ones is when they are wanting to make the babies. This fellow was in a Kansas field, and I walked fairly close to him. He would have never run at all and I could have gotten real close, except for one thing. The doe he was courting decided she wanted to run, he wouldn't budge as long as she didn't. The rut has already passed and the antlers are going to be falling off soon. But...later in the spring when the antlers are in velvet we can get some good pics. This guy is probably a 1/1000 deer, even in Kansas you don't see them this big that often.

This time of year once the antlers fall off, it gets hard to get interesting shots. Our next big chance will be spotted babies in a few months.

Good day for finding some difficult to shot animals. I was headed out to go do some walking around a local pond and found a Snow Owl just down the road from my house. Then I found a beaver in the pond.

Later in the day I found the Owl on a much more photogenic perch (same place I saw him yesterday), but he was to far away... I need to go talk to the owner of the property and see if I can get a better pic in the future.

....it was so close I could not get it all in the frame with the 500mm lens I had been using for birds!

Oh you poor thing! It must be terrible having such a long lens. I'll tell you what, I'm willing to swap your 500mm for my 17-40mm to make life easier for you because I'm such a nice guy ;)

Yeah too little use, too much weight in the bag and I needed the money to help fund my other hobby...a new mountainbike:o To be honest we have had very bad macro seasons the last two years so it had been used very little. I am currently looking if extension tubes are a good option. Otherwise I might be looking at a used 100mm (non-L) macro.

As for your kit-lens. It works pretty good. For fun(experimenting) you could take it off the camera, hold it reversed to your camera and take a shot. You can get very magnified pictures that way. You would need to have good light I think. A (pop-up)flash helps. There are even adapters on the market to attach your lens reversed to your camera. I would say, just try it out:o

Brant;

Great shots of the howler monkees. Love the one of the mother and her baby, really great to get a shot like that.

The Cano Negro area is great isn't it? We went there a couple years ago. It's great that you can see alot of wildlife in a small area. It's not like that in most other areas. We found that in the amazon basin, there are still alot of animals, but they have alot more space to hide...so it's sometimes harder to find the same diversity of wildlife as in smaller areas like Cano Negro.

Thanks Pat. It was a great trip. I'd recommend Costa Rica to anyone...as long as they can tolerate the roads....

Stephen. Cano Negro was great. I wish I had more time. I went there expecting to see a ton of birds, but only saw a few (but a lot of other wildlife). I don't think our boat tour made it very far into the refuge and I have a feeling there is a lot more to see. Next time I will go with one of the more specialized tours that are out longer. I enjoyed all of the parks I went to as we had good luck in Carara and Manuel Antonio National parks as well. That is interesting about the Amazon, but makes sense. The farmland around each of Costa Rica's parks/refuges likely does consolidate the wildlife.

Still processing photos :).

Great stuff on this thread too. Here is a little addition from me.
Weather was kind of gray but I still got some okay shots of deer and a first for me: a fox! :)
The first one is very heavily processed as it was very dark and I saw them when I was walking to the field but it makes for an interesting photo nevertheless.

Thanks Jan. I've seen one before a few times.Even quite near my home here in the city since we have a large park and some small forest and hill patches around here. But this was the first time I had my camera ready and was prepared for one. It was so great that he came back near the hunting tower where I was sitting since I thought I was late and wouldn't see him again after the early morning encounter.

While out hiking yesterday I spotted a herd of red deer grazing in a clearing in the forest. I think the snow at higher levels had driven them down the hill. I have often got shots of the backside of a deer running away from me, but this time I think they had safety in numbers as they kept a watchful eye on me. It's a shame that the longest lens I had with me was 200mm, so this is cropped to about a quarter of the frame.

Very nice shot Sean especially since this isn't really in your usual realm of subject matters! Also, the Kenko seems to work really well for you! I've been wondering how one would perform on my Sigma zoom.

Well, now that the baby robins have flown the nest a bit too soon and survived the hunting instincts of my dogs, I now find that I have a bunny nest in my yard! Being the city slicker that I am, I didn't know that is what this was at first. My daughter started to remove it from my flower garden for me & something moved from underneath it and we both bolted into the house! I looked it up online and sure enough that is what it is!

Could someone please tell me how long this little guys tend to stick around the nest before existing on their merry way!? I have no clue what I am going to do with my 3 dogs until they are gone!

I had one literally in the middle of my front lawn a few years back and even mowed around it. I can't remember exactly how long they were there -- a week or so? I also think a hawk found them...

If it is in fact a rabbit nest (looks kind of small to me) then the babies are weaned after about three weeks and can leave the nest at any point after that, but could stick around for longer.

Not sure if farm animals count as 'nature', but this sheep is on a tiny island off the west coast of Scotland. The hill beyond is on a neighbouring island.

I finally managed to get some shots of deer from close range in good light. I prefer the backlit one myself.

Fawn in the neighbor's front yard. It stayed put while we were all several feet away, but the cat scared it away.

Love the Fawn Cowmao--the angle and the fawn peering through the grass just make the shot.

Here are a few from the weekend taken at The Bosque Del Apache in NM.

Just a turkey, But I liked the colors:

Denise, your butterfly bush looks great in your shots. I shot those with my 300mm f4L IS at MFD, so I still had quite a few feet between them and I. I was lucky because this place doesn't get any water and the only things that were alive were clover patches. I believe that helped with the DOF more than anything.

You caught some good action there, Brant. Great shots.

Not much action in this shot, from a hike in the Cairngorm mountains last weekend. I came across these reindeer browsing on the short grass high up near the summit of Cairn Gorm. At this altitude, the snow can lie all year round. These three beasts are part of a herd of about 120 that roam these hills, but it's still quite rare to see them as they tend to avoid the most frequented areas. They are very docile and were unconcerned as I approached them.

Good to see you posting Andy. Beasts? These three beasts? For beasts they look very cute, furry and cuddly. No red noses???

I just checked my dictionary and it says a beast is "Any animal other than man, esp. a large wild quadruped." The term is often used in Scotland to refer to deer.

What's a dictionary?
We call cattle beasts, so I think you are right, deers definitely qualify as beasts.

Thanks Bob, Jayson, and Steph. Always fun to get out and hike a little.

Steph, I edited the post to include exposure settings. On the first, I probably should have used the 6 stop ND and stopped down. But it started off brighter and as I was shooting clouds rolled in, it got dark so I quickly tried to adjust, dropping down to f/5.6. The posted shot was the last one I could get before the rain.

Brant - Your waterfalls just keep getting better. One question... why ISO 800 on the first one? It turned out good, but I was wondering why not go ISO 100 and less ND? In any case it turned out really nice.

Brant - Your waterfalls just keep getting better. One question... why ISO 800 on the first one? It turned out good, but I was wondering why not go ISO 100 and less ND? In any case it turned out really nice.

Pat, first off, thanks. The reasons for ISO 800 were actually time and weather. When I first checked the exposure of the scene, I needed the 10 stop filter for a 30 sec exposure at ~ ISO 200 (which is hardly distinguishable to ISO 100, IMO). But, darker clouds moved in as I finished setting up and the first two shots were too dark. Rain start to fall during the second shot, so I bumped to ISO 800 and got the 3rd shot. By the time I got the camera back in the bag it was pouring rain.

So, if the rain hadn't started to fall in the second, I may have adjusted to the 6-stop ND. But I had little time and it was faster to adjust ISO. I do know what you are saying as noise starts to creep in pretty quick on the 7D, especially compared to the new models. There was noise in the shot that I smoothed out in post.

Thanks for the explination. Your shot looks good and clean, and I wanted to make sure I was not missing some great waterfall trick that I was not aware of. I hate getting my 7D up to ISO 400, and seldom get to 800 (how I wish for a 5D). I agree with you regarding the difference between ISO 100 and 200.

Well this is kind of nature at it's worst I suppose. It's been so dry out here, we have had one or two showers since February. The bush fires are starting to kick into gear at a rapid rate. I saw the glow from this one from my house this evening so I went for a drive to have a sticky beak. It was massive. Luckily the wind is taking it away from town.

Yes everyone is fine, we've got a fair amount of spare space out here so nobody has been exposed at this stage. Although the highway out of town has been closed for the last few days.

I think it will be a good thing provided nobody is hurt etc in the process. It's a natural part of the yearly cycle out here. It gets dry for most of the year, the spinifex grass and weeds flourish (which none of the livestock or native animals can eat), a giant fire comes through just as spring hits and kills it all off. Everything grows again and the place is beautiful for a few months, only to dry out again when the rain stops.

I think the difference this year is that we really didn't have many bush fires last year, so there was a lot more fuel and hence the fires have been larger.

Great shots of the bucks Nick.
