On behalf of Erno James, this is assignment 44: Sticks

I know, a bit different. The subject of this assignment is quite broad and there really are no restrictions, so we'll leave it up to the clever minds of those here on The-Digital-Picture to conjure up their own interpretations of STICKS. Some ideas to get us jumpstarted include:

fences
branches
drumsticks
chopsticks
sticks and stones
out in the sticks
sticky situations

....whatever you feel fit.

Well, I have to say all entries were worthy of making the Top 5, so thanks for all who submitted entries to the STICKS assignment. In random order are the chosen finalists:

Name: ddt0725
Motivation: A great take on STICKS, really pushing the creativity button on this assignment. Lovely color whirl.

Name: conropl
Motivation: Leading lines, pastels, and a silky smooth long exposure Lake Michigan all make for a great shot.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8060/8193219640_558fc74355_c.jpg

Name: Dr Croubie
Motication: A great interpretation of STICKS. Nice lighting and what a subject.

Name: Jonathan Huyer
Motivation: This is fine art. Lovely shallow depth of field, great low angle natural light, and the sprinkles of snow in the right foreground are all the icing on the cake. The majestic owl is placed perfectly, and he seems to peer directly into the soul of the viewer.

Name: Steph
Motivation: Nice action, mood, and the perfect shutter speed. This image tells a story.

Best of luck to all and thanks again partaking in the assignment. Regards, Erno James

The poll will be open for 3 days
Good luck!

ok, eww@that last photo.

I was going to ask if photos of "out in the sticks" counts (because technically, it should be "out in the Styx"). I thought that was just as Aussie saying (like the US saying is, i believe, "in BF, Nowhere"), but seeing as it's mentioned in the post then maybe other people do know the expression too.
Given that I live out in the Sticks as it is (I'm sure Steve can make an Adelaide joke now), I should have plenty of fodder to choose from...

Agreed...Enro sets a high bar.....

I am not saying that these are better, but I don't think I'll be able to get out to shoot something original before the deadline. So, here are a few from my archive....from Muir Woods just north of San Francisco earlier this year. The first is my entry:

I cannot always get out and shoot something specifically for an assignment, but I actually left work before the sunset yesterday so I was able to get out to shoot something I had in mind for this assignment (although the sun was already down before I got there). The first one will be my entery. This will replace the waterfall I entered earlier from my archives.

This is an old break wall along Lake Michigan used to control erosion. It has now weathered and worn into a bunch of sticks sticking up in the sunset over Lake Michigan.

http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8060/8193219640_558fc74355_c.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60479608@N05/8193219640/)

I also got a late start yesterday and was able to get a shot of the sunrise in the sticks on the way to work.

Thanks... I used a Grad ND filter, and then used a small LED flashlight to paint a little extra light on the "sticks";) during the 30 second shutter time.

2. this one is from the country side by my family farm. Sticks holding more prickly things. I recently dug out some old photos for a project and reworked them.

Like many others, I have too many things going on that will prevent me from going out on a specific shoot so this is my entry. An image from my trip to New Mexico to visit Bob Williams in January. It is a landscape from The Bosque Del Apache. I wanted to silhouette the "sticks" against a snow covered mountain.

This Saturday I finally got some spare time for photography. I did have the current assignment in mind when I went for a drive into the woods nearby. The "sticks" subject made me think of the common (at least in Sweden) countryside roundpole fences.

Well, to continue on with the theme of everyone interpreting this in a completely different manner (just to make the judging all the more difficult), I'll make my entry a Stick Insect (on the apparently dusty roof of my car):

http://croubie.smugmug.com/photos/i-9mrdH4g/0/L/i-9mrdH4g-L.jpg (http://croubie.smugmug.com/Shared/TDPAssignments/20910085_PRtm3T#!i=2243520510&k=9mrdH4g&lb=1&s=A)

It's unfortunately an old one, no time for much new these days. Seems I may have already entered a shot of this guy in a previous assignment, but not this exact shot, i took it from raw again tonight (if anyone cares enough to complain)
