I just recently got into DSLRphotography and was wondering if anyone knows of a good magazine to subscribe to?

Is there an obvious best?

Thanks,

Rodger

I subscribe to :

Popular Photography
American Photography
Shutterbug

I will only renew the subscription to Popular Photography. I find that it has the most interesting and informative articles. It's full of practical advise that photographers of all skill levels can apply.

Shutterbug is good mag for information. I use to work for them. Editor George Shaub is a very knowledgeable and super good guy.

They were kind of at the forefront too. They use to have a magazine called eDigital before digital took over the industry.

The design of the book leaves a little to be desired but the info is great.

This months American Photo is a special Annie Leibovitz issue and it get some great insight on and of her.

I subscribe to Pop Photo because it's only around 25 cents per issue. The technical content is plagued by many misconceptions and gross inaccuracies, but the creative part is useful.

I agree. I have borrowed a couple issues and I found the same. Recently, for example, there was a comparison of full frame to crop sensors with their judgement being that it is a wash what you choose and that full-frame will soon fade away. They ignored the issue completely of how full frame gives you shallower depth of field for same framing, etc., which is why I like it. Good creative stuff, though, as you said.

Well, if a mag is full of inaccurate technical information, that's not something I'm interested in. I want to learn more about techniques, but also general photographical knowledge, too, and if it's full of wrong information.....no thanks.

I, too, am looking for a photo mag to subscribe to. My parents gave me a Digital Camera World for Christmas, and I loved it. Lots of great information, great techniques, tutorials, etc. But it's EXPENSIVE. Like over $100 for one year. I assume its high price is at least partly because it's based in the UK.

Anyone know of a magazine here in the States that may be a little like Digital Camera World?

I recently got the May issue of shutterbug and I really liked it.

What about Digital Camera World? I picked them up at a book store and they looked legit. (I cant judge technical information that well because I don't know much about it) Is the only drawback the high price?

One more I picked up was "Photographic" It seemed to deal more with basic tips and such. But it looked good too.

Opinions, thoughts?

I don't subscribe to any mags, butusuallygo to Barnes and Noble or Borders, see what they haveand pick 1-2 most interesting magazines that month.

I enjoy reading British magazines, like Photography Monthly, Practical Photography, Digital Camera World, What Digital Camera. The former 3go forabout $10, the latter - $6-7. They are more pricey than the domestic ones but often worth the extra few bucks.

well shoot, that one's even more expensive than Digital Camera World! It seems there aren't any decent publications based in the US anymore.

CPN Magazine :)

Most mainstream photo rags are paid off by the manufactuers for positive reviews. They also tend to be more ads than content.

Does anyone have any sugestions for a magazine 'portfolio' style with large semigloss images? If photographyserved.com were a magazine thats what I would want.

It's specific to B&W, but I really like LensWork.

Photo Plus:

Well holy Bat poop, Bat man. I could fly to Manila[ip] on the back of an albatros for the price of that subscription.[:O] A $116.65. Gee, it better be printed in gold leaf for that price.

I'd like to see a copy before I lay out that kind of bread on a mag rag. Whew, shudder, shudder.

It's a good mag, with very good essays about the creativity and "seeing." I haven't pulled the trigger on a subscription myself yet, but when you compare it to the price of photography class, it starts to look worth it.

molovamark:

I understand your reasoning for the mag in price over a class. Last night when I talked it over with my wife she made it very clear that she thought that a class/classes would be more beinficial than a magazine. Her point was you usually get what you pay for and she felt it was more worth while to spend money on classes that on a mag rag for $116.65, 13 issues per year. I would feel safe to venture that that mag will not venture into my mail box anytime soon.
