On behalf of Colin500, this is assignment 49: Fire

On various occasions my pictures used fire as (main) light source and/or as (part of the) main subject. Of course the fire doesn't have to be so obvious as in the examples, perhaps you show us a past or a future fire, or ... well, that's the fun part, I'm curious to see what people come up with :-)

The following photos have been selected as finalists:

Name: DavidWare
Motivation: Minimalistic and quiet and a bit abstract (which I like)

http://i.minus.com/isGjiGnDHibhe.jpg

Name: Steph
Motivation: Nightly action scene where the fire really stands out!

http://photos.deghaye.com/photos/i-h8SNGtx/0/L/i-h8SNGtx-L.jpg

Name: Sheiky
Motivation: Great shape of the "woman" plus some nice swirls, and again abstract ;-)

Name: Jayson
Motivation: Nice contrast of colours, and I've been trying something similar for a while

The poll will be opened for 3 days. Good luck!

A big CONGRATS Colin and what a hot topic! I too am looking forward to the huge variety of images that will be posted in the next two weeks. Regards, erno

My kid thought this photo of the Peter Iredale shipwreck in the northernmost part of Oregon looked like a dragon with fire in his belly.

I've not posted anything in a long time -- but this shot seems appropriate. Taken during the Epiphany festivities, Girona, Spain, 1-6-2013. 5DMIII, EF17-40 F4.0L.

And -- since I haven't posted in a while -- How do I get the image full size in the post?

Everyone mentioning having an image laying around reminded me that I have something too.

Here is my burning entry!

Not taken recently though (Crete 2011)

And three others, also with fire, that I like quite a bit. Although I've got camera shake blur (38mm @ 1/5 sec), one can see how they were "fighting" with the fire swords.

This was taken back in 2011. The combination of waves and clouds on the horizon created a look of flames moving up and down and across the horizon as the sun was setting. It was the strangest sight.

Not really fire, but it sure looked like it.

Very cool (or hot?) Jan! The lady on fire looks like a winning shot to me. Maybe you could share the setup/recipe for this shot in a week or so?

Thanks guys!

Well actually I could have called it Hot Woman on Cocain :p To be fair I didn't have any control over the shape of the flame and the figure in it is just a lucky shot. I made a small fingersize bowl of tinfoil in which I poored some (I think you'd call it:) white spirit. In my younger years I knew the powdered milk stuff some people throw into their coffee gives quite nice bursts of flames when you poor it over a small fire. Well I didn't find any of that, but after some expirimenting with salt and pepper and stuff...powdered sugar seemed to work as well. So that's what you're seeing here.

Settings: 100mm macro(don't think I used extension rings here), ISO 100, f10, 1/200s. One 430 EX2 flash on the left side in the back, about 1ft away at 1/64 power. A cardboard box with some tinfoil on the right front next to the lens to reflect the flash. Background was a simple piece of paper.

Anyway, there are probably still a lot more and a lot better shots of fire...keep em coming!

Hi everybody, and sorry for the delay -- was mainly due to the snow and ice which disrupted my two week trip around central Europe a bit.

I've now chosen the finalists and informed Sheiky, as usual it wasn't easy and I could equally well have chosen a few other ones, but ...

Anyhow, nice round of showing and sharing, now let's vote and on towards the next one ;-)

Haha thanks guys! Actually I'm surprised how much good can come out of 2 hours of having fun with flames, I'd recommend it to anyone(at your own risk);)

As for the simplicity of arranging the next assignment...well I really got to think about that. It's assignment 50 and I think that should be something special. Also I'm still working on ideas to improve the style of the assignments. Will work on it as fast as I can:o

Thanks again and I must say that I think there were a lot of great shots in this assignment.

PS: I got some great ideas from some of you already, but if you've got any ideas for the improvement of the assignments, please mail or PM me:D
