@dslegel5151:

Very nice!

Glad to see that someone else gets good use of the 300mm f4L! I got one after my 100-400mm was stolen, as the 100-400mm was just too expensive. (Eventually, I got a Sigma 120-400mm OS lens.) I was very pleased with the color, sharpness, & IS. WIth the Caon 1.4x extender, it goes as far as the 100-400mm and looks at least as good. (The 100-400mm will go further with the extender, of course, but it doesn

When we adopted him we knew he had heartworm and would need treatment over a 6 month period.....well yesterday we rec'd great news....he's heartworm free!!

Pardon the electrical box in the background....he doesn't like his pic taken and wouldn't hold still in a good area of our backyard....he's concentrating on a squirrel and was ignoring me when I took this pic.

Thanks Denise and Steve....he's a great dog and he deserved a chance. I'll stop here before I get up on my soap box.

In the 25 years we've been adopting (5) Chows Steve, it's been the (2) females that required the attention, i.e. being near you for some scratchings. Whereas the males just need to be in the same room and you go to them to scratch them....but we know they enjoy our fussing. [:)]

Nice shots, David! They are two awesome looking dogs but if I ever own another, I would love to have one that looks just like Zuni!

DavidEccleston
05-22-2011, 12:59 AM
Not sure how well everyone knows their breeds, so I'll just mention what she is. She's an Australian Shepherd. The mixed coloring pattern is referred to as a Blue Merle. There are also Red Merles. The merle coloring is genetic, and it's dangerous to breed two merles together. So, you'll breed a merle and a non-merle, and hope that some puppies will be merles. I think there are two or three breeds that get merle patterns, so you may be able to find something more sedate than an Aussie.

In the first week we had her, atleast a half-dozen people ask us where we found a breeder that would let us keep the tail. Most breeders will clip the tails off of Aussies, and in many countries you can't show an Aussie that doesn't have a clipped tail, but we don't care about showing her. So where did we get her? My wife's best friend happens to breed them. She's in Poland, and we're in Canada. Over the New Year's Holidays, my wife flew over to pick up Zuni's brother, changed her mind, and came home with Zuni.

I'll be the first to admit that this isn't a good photo by any means but that's not the point of this one. Getting all three of my dogs in the same photo is a rare occasion but having them all looking at me at the same time when I have a camera in my hand instead of a treat is something that never happens!

Most of you know I'm VERY new to using photoshop. I used this photo and another to practice merging two together and I was pretty proud that I was able to do it and have it actually work!! Granted, if I would have used a tripod, it would have worked out better. But at least now I know I don't have to throw the photos away anymore when they don't all look at the camera!

They are Speckled King snakes. Not venomous. These little guys will strike at you but its kind of funny. They are all about to shed their first skin so they are on the grumpy side. After they shed I can hopefully give them their first meal. Might let them go back into the wild after the first feeding. May hang onto one as a pet.

Not my dog, belonged to a friend of my dad's cousin i met last weekend at their housewarming. Came from Holland, spent a month or two in aussie customs quarantine to get her into the country, but the friendliest little thing i'd ever seen (i normally prefer big dogs, but i'll make an exception for this one).

Apparently she'd just won a 'cutest dog' competition run by the local newspaper, not hard to see why...

Thanks. It is tough to get the exposure right with him. Luckily, he didn't move too much. (He turned around after too many flashes.) I figured the separation flash would definehis outline -- power is too high. And, I got lucky with the key flash (tweaked with DPP) for just enough fur detail while the rest is blurred.

I usually have to overexpose the background to get good dur detail, like this one.

Hi Denise,

Here's a link to what Dave is trying to describe:http://www.caninecrib.com/dog/training/standard-jump.asp ("http://www.caninecrib.com/dog/training/standard-jump.asp)

You can find lots of other cheap and easy ideas on the web if you google for home-made agility equipment or pvc agility if you choose to use pvc pipes to make it.

In order to keep this post true to the topic I'm adding a photo of our crazy Zuni over a home-made jump set at a "baby" height. ;-)

Thank you David & Madga for the link! I printed it out and will be putting someone to work on it soon!

My little lap dog is a puppy mill survivor and was pretty much afraid of his own shadow when he was a pup. The only time he came out of his shell was during agility classes! So Sammy & I thank you very much!

Kudos to you for taking in a little survivor Denise! Our first two dogs were rescues with all sorts of issues and agility was their only happy time, too. We were never particularly successful but we sure enjoyed playing together. ;-)

Good luck to you and Sammy! :-)

My gf's sister's dog. Normally I really hate little dogs (this guy's body is the size of my auntie's dog's head), but Chico is so well behaved and cute and actually smart for something with a brain the size of a walnut (beats some humans I know). And he was named after candy.

This one was kinda blurry because it was indoors and he was running, but I quite like the effect with the streaming hair (and it looks a lot better shrunk down this size).

Agreed, one of the best shots and cutest dogs i've seen...

Here's one of mine from this morning, 4 new 'pets' in on photo!
2 chooks, and the EF 85/1.8 and Speedlite I used to take the shot.
The chooks were a day old or so when we got them on monday, I think they've nearly doubled in size since then. So far they're living in a cardboard box, and they've almost mastered jumping up to the perch I set up for them.
75

(I'll say "almost" mastered getting up onto the perch, this is what normally happens...)

With times being as tight as they are I had to pick up an extra gig on the weekends hopefully just for the holidays. I'm the pet photographer at Petco for the Pets Unleashed photo company. Things I said I would never do have come to light. I haven't worked an eight hour day like the ones I did last week in a long time. At least I don't have to use my own equipment.

Dr Croubie
11-19-2011, 11:00 PM
What's that rule about not working with children or pets?
Set up the whole thing properly beforehand, with the camera on the tripod with the cable-release, manual focussed. With the speedlite on the side pointing at the exact-right spot on the ceiling, with the right ratio of onboard:speedlite. With the aperture perfect to get the right DOF on the subject and blurry-enough background. Even with a bit of food hidden to keep her occupied and interested while I snapped away.

...

and then the stupid thing just wouldn't hold still in the pose I wanted.

edit: and that really does look a lot fuzzier than on my comp, even the shrunk version. Guess i'm going to have to figure out how to get a flickr...

Not sure if it counts, but it's certainly not fair, you get a much wider range of potential subjects :P
I've got no dog, my favourite one is on the other side of the world (my auntie's 65kg st bernard, 6-year-old puppy).
There's a dedicated dog-park around the corner from me, I was going to try copy Denise's idea and go there with my camera, maybe try take some shots to sell to the owners. But now it's full of earthmoving machinery, not sure what's going on there, but no dogs.

ps, Denise, love the spaniel. Has anyone else seen the movie 'Fluppy Dogs'?

It sure doesn't stop him from enjoying playing in the snow! He is such a tough little guy!

We have a new addition. His name is Bo, a ragdoll kitten. Very inetresting times as the 4 dogs try to get to know him.
This one taken very hastily on the bedroom floor, ISO 3200, but you get the idea.

And the equally handsome Leroy Brown who went to the vet two days before this and had 17 teeth removed. Shouldn't have let it go that long, but had no idea it was that bad. He still has plenty of teeth and will make a full recovery and apparantly his gums will harden up very quickly and he will be chewing the hard stuff soon.

@Steve - Bo has the most beautiful eyes I have ever seen on a kitty! Poor Leroy Brown :( I'm in the same situation with my Cocker ...he doesn't like chewing on hard nylabones or anything so his teeth are not in the best of shape! Now I'm headed over to flickr to see what you used for these sharp shots!!

@Kombi - Welcome to the forums!! Love the captions with the photos! These are very sharp also! What combo did you use?

Nice B&W and perfect focus on the eye. I don't know whether the bokeh makes it look angelic, or confused. LOL, you know like those stars above the coyotes head when the roadrunner drops an anvil on him.

Steve, Yeah, at first I really didn't like the photo. Those are actually lights from a christmas tree in the background. After I B&W'd it I liked it more. I still find the lights distracting, but not as much as when they were multi-colored. I'm still torn between whether or not the lights are too distracting or add to the overall picture in a positive way...

I really like this shot. Did you do anything in PP to bring out the black?

Thank you! And yes I did. I shot in raw and ramped up the exposure and set the blacks to 0 (I probably did some other stuff too, but those were the most important) to give the black cat some sort of discernible texture, this resulted in the rest of the image becoming overexposed and washed out. I then opened the image as a smart object (hold Alt in Adobe camera raw), made a copy via smart object, then re-opened the copy in camera raw and adjusted it the way I wanted it. I rasterized both layers and then used a mask to lightly brush shadow detail into the black cat.

It sounds like a lot of effort for very little visible effect... and you'd be right! But black fur is such a pain to shoot.
