Beautiful shots of a really cute pooch, Brant! I love the lighting from the window! I don't know much about the breed but seems to be very quiet and laid back ...I could use one like that around here!

I am still very new and inexperienced at grooming my dogs myself but here are a few shots just after going under the clippers ...

Went to visit my mother for Easter. She wanted me to get shots of her bulldog that was recently diagnosed with leukemia. Was a rather poor day to take pictures and I only had a 1DIII, 70-200, and a flash. This was about as good as I could do. Anyways, she died yesterday at 3 years of age. Below is my mother's new puppy...a little French bulldog.

I'm so sorry to hear about the 3 year old pup. We lost our 7 year old cat from chronic renal failure a year ago November. Often times life is not fair...

Here are a couple of my father and mother inlaw's cat Cooper. Both are with the 6D and Zeiss 50mm f/1.4 Planar wide open. I'm loving the Zeiss rendering.

I just picked up a Canon 600EX-RT, as they are having a massive sale in Canada ($150 off!). My furry test subjects can be seen below.

All the images are from the 1Ds2, on camera, bounced. All the light is from a single flash, with no ambient contribution. Shooting without the flash results in a black frame.

Also, as I thought I'd read somewhere that the 600EX-RT can only be radio triggered, so I'd like to point out you can choose radio or optical trigger. My 7D was able to fire it off-camera just fine with it's built-in popup flash. The exposures on the 7D seemed darker than when used on the 1Ds2. I haven't dug into that mystery yet.

A friend wanted "professional" pictures of her dogs, but I said I'd do it for free (practice). The main goal was running towards the camera, but I also managed to capture a "moment" (almost on purpose).

Looks pretty good. I'd try to boost the brightness of the shadow range a bit, to help define the eye in the black fur.

Also I find a lot of dogs eyes come out very, very dark, and it doesn't look good. You should be able to do a masked brightness change to the eyes in just about everything (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, GIMP, Lightroom, but not DPP). In Elements I do this as an adjustment layer. First I crank it up really bright so I can see where I'm painting the mask, then I can just drag the slider around until I feel it looks good.

But, yeah, overall, good job!

Looks pretty good. I'd try to boost the brightness of the shadow range a bit, to help define the eye in the black fur.

I normally don't process pictures more than white balance/exposure. I saw the catch lights from the sun/sky in his eyes and said, "good enough."

However, I do see what you're saying. I tried what you suggested using Elements 10 to boost the brightness of the eyes until I could make out the pupils. I think I might have overdone it, but it looks better after walking away from it for a while. To see everything in his eyes, I had to move the brightness slider all the way to max, but he started looking more like a zombie-dog.

Here's the result using the adjustment layer on his eyes for brightness -- set to 135/150.
http://www.jimslamepics.com/Public/TDP/i-6tr8hS7/0/L/img_5460_dpp-5dii%20copy-L.jpg

Most of my processing is just with DPP, so I wondered how it would look in HDR. Fur looks overly processed, but it brought out the eyes just enough. Well, maybe the fur distracts from the eyes more than the eyes themselves. This is HDR, Art Standard, Saturation down to 40 from 50.
http://www.jimslamepics.com/Public/TDP/i-QSDppZj/0/L/IMG_5460-DPP-HDR-5DII-L.jpg

Thanks for the suggestion. Good tip.

DavidEccleston

Nice. I prefer the adjustment layer over the HDR. Actually being able to see the shape/shading on the eyeball is a huge improvement over the original. Glad to have been helpful.

Did you take some with a tighter framing as well?

Poik
11-19-2013, 03:22 PM
Thanks! Didn't take any tighter than that. Most of the shots I took were 20-30" exposures of the city to try out my tripod. I just decided to try a few shots with him in there and play around with some light painting with my flashlight. It was hard enough to get him to look at the camera and stay still while I shined a light in his eyes :). It was an LED flashlight so you can tell that the foreground is quite a bit cooler.

Now for some shots while the sun was up... it's tricky to shoot a black dog after sunset! I have decided that the 10-18mm is actually an awesome puppy lens, assuming you have enough light ... I got the cheap-o ultra-wide expecting it to be a hard to use, niche lens. That was my experience with the 16-35mm on full-frame with a hyperactive Aussie. But, the lighter lens, on a lighter body, with a subject that likes to stick close by, and isn't yet afraid of things being stuck in it's face... it's a winning combo. (first is 1Ds2, 85mm, remainder are 7D, 10-18mm)

I didn't realize that no one else had posted about pets since last fall. I never explained the above post. Roxy passed in October of last year. She was 16 years old, which is doing well for a pug. Last October, the above post was my small quiet acknowledgement of that fact.

In May, we got a new pug puppy....meet Etta James:

:( Sorry to hear about Roxy, but it sounds like she lived a long life.

Congrats on welcoming Etta James into your lives. Keep your eye on Etta though... puppies like to chew things. Our previous wireless router can attest to that (thanks Bran! ;) )

I completely agree! Those ears are something! He is a very gentle, quiet and adorable little boy who is fast as lightening and knows lots of tricks ...even knows how to bow his head between his paws to pray. Now if I can get my other two cranky boys to accept his existence!

Scrolling through this thread, I think Buddy grew up here on TDP!

I need to work on my technique. But we recently fenced in our side yard which has made Etta pretty darn happy.

Fenced yards are great for the little ones. Gives them a sense of territory. Great shot!
