View Full Version : Image of the Week.....Week#1

Steve U
06-12-2013, 09:31 PM
Thought I would try and start something here to get some more images for us to look at.
I would like to try and keep it casual and keep it fun. Entry period will be from Sunday to Sunday, with this first one closing on the 23 June.
Only two categories; Portrait and Landscape
Portrait- People, animals
Landscape- Country, town, city, sea, abstract, things (water drops, smoke, flowers, candles and so on)

Each category will have a winner each week, voted by the thread starter for that week. Then a poll to sort out monthly winners.

Please supply a title for your image and what category you are entering in. Enter as many times as like, old or new images.

Let's see how this goes, have fun and good luck.

Just read the story attached Sean, that's very funny. He's not smiling and it doesn't look like he's been sleeping very much either. His eyes look sore.
Great shot.

Steve, you always come up with cool ideas. Agreed that more images could be shared here; seems like there's been a noticable drop off in the Assigments of late.

I have learnt a lot from this site over the years and thought it might increase a bit of participation and generate a bit of interest. The least we will end up with is a nice portfolio of shots to look at. :)

I don't think you need to bracket the BBCode with [img]. I have seen others explain the procedure the same, but I have never done that. I just copy the BBCode and paste it directly or paste the pict as you describe. So far it has always work for me, and I do not think it is actually doing anything if the "[img]" shows up as text as it does.

Is the [img] bracketing something that has to be done for other brousers maybe?

Finally went to do some night shots. I actually tried to catch the golden hour on Mount Hamilton, but arrived too late, so I thought I might as well stay a bit and see what the night brings. The moon was too bright for starscapes, but it illuminated the 120inch telescope nicely. And I did not have a flashlight, so I accepted it gladly :)

I agree Mark, it's a little hot on the right side, but I guess I shouldn't expect much different as it was shot with high key in mind and a goal of sort of fading out the right side of her face into the background. Instead, I looked at it and then added the contrast back in post.

bgood, I love the first daughter shot. Perhaps dial down the saturation on the second one's eyes? The sudden saturation coupled with the enormous pupil doesn't work to my eye.

There was a writeup a while back on how to do a quick and dirty version of this in Lightroom. I'd link to it, but I can't seem to find it. (Maybe someone can help me find it.) The PP on this one took me like 90 seconds. Not nearly as good as bgood's images, but it was quick!

It's a Bluejay and somewhat ordinary but what struck me about this frame is that I saw a ghostly face in the trees immediately when I saw the image on the back of my camera. Does anyone else see the weird face in the background? It gave me the creeps!

I finally had some time to go hiking last saturday. It was the first weekend with a nice weather since what looked like an eternity. As you can see there is still a lot of snow on the mountaintops. It was the first time I carried my tripod all the way up there. The little villages you can see in the valley is the place I'm coming from. Every picture I posted on the forum this Winter came from this valley.

Taken with my 6D and 17-40.

You might have to be geographically banned from image assignments Pierre, it's just not fair...... :)

Several great contributions to this thread!

Mine may not do too well in the tough competition but still I choose to add this shot from yesterday evening. The idea was to try to use the rising full moon in some way. I played around with the moon and the navigation mark differently placed in the frame, and when this boat drove by it sort of improved the balance.

CLS - Great wall hanger. Yesterday was a great day to get a moon shot. Well done.

Tounis - That is a great shot, and the wild flowers in the forground really threw it over the top... great composition.

Well, without this little advantage I don't think I would be able to post much here, as I can't really compete in terms of skills. On the other hand, I'm not cheating as much as I could. The Matterhorn, for example, is just an hour away from my place, and I still haven't posted any pictures of it :p .

Thanks a lot for your comment Pat.
