Portrait Entry #1 "Mother-in-Law turns 94"

At 94 she is remarkable. If you ask her "How are you?" She invariably replies with a smile "I'm hangin' in there!"

She remains gracious and is still finding joy in the simple, everyday things that life has to offer. She especially likes my bird pictures:)

I'm a lucky man to have known her.

This is not even in the same league as Sean's fireworks picture a couple of weeks ago. It was my first attempt at fireworks while trying to capture both the show and some of the surrounding environment. I learned that I was too close without a wide enough lens and that long exposures to capture the trees don't lend themselves to fireworks shows that have multiple blasts per second. I chalk this up to a slow learning process that comes around once per year for me. Anyway, after a long day of hiking out from a backpacking trip, this was just the way to finish off the night with my wife and kids.

Portrait: The Lady and I
We went out to Fort Foster in Kittery Maine and she was begging for me to take a picture of us. Set up the tripod and the timer and jumped into the picture.

Somehow that is not the expression I would have come up with - something more akin to Hey! get off my rocks.... :)

Yes that would probably suit it better, given the expression! The marmot was actually letting out a piercing whistle, which was incredibly loud. But it wasn't annoyed by my being there... it sat down and sunned itself shortly thereafter.

David thanks for your comment! Your church shot is awesome... The lighting is very dramatic, especially with the moon. You were obviously up late!

Yessir, I got out of work at 230am and had my camera gear on me because I was at the beach prior. That church is spotlighted throughout the night and it was on my route home so I figured, "Why not?" I was just lucky to catch the moon when I did. There was barely any breaks in the clouds.

Sometimes it pays off to always have your gear with you. My stuff might qualify for having done the most trips (to and from work) without seeing any use, but there were these few occasions where I was glad I had it with me :-)

Great shots everyone! The "Fairway Fiend" is great - what a subject.

I think we'll call it a week here and let Denise sort out her two finalists.

Everyone's entries are all winners IMO so choosing only one for each category is not easy! I have it narrowed down some at least and will post the finalists shortly.

It was tough deciding, especially when you throw a puppy into the mix!

For this week's finalists I choose, for the Portrait Category, Joel's "Mother-In-Law turns 94". IMO, portrait photography is all about capturing those important memories, and this is a wonderful portrait to be cherished forever.

For the Landscape Category, David's "North Church". This is a phenomenal nighttime shot. Composition, lighting and detail is really superb! Congrats to both finalists and thank you for having me as this weeks judge.

Thank you Denise, wasn't quite expecting that. I thought Joel had the landscape category locked down with his entry. Fantastic entries by everyone though! I'm sure this week was hard to judge. Congratulations to Joel as well!

While I did really like both of Joel's landscape pictures (especially the second), yours is special and really deserve to be this week pick. Congrats on a great shot.
