Should have cropped that right hand corner, didn't look as bad on black.

Here is my entry. I was getting out my gear when my son wanted to help out taking a few shots. after I was done I setup my stuff so he could take some portraits of his monkey.

My son was taking a picture of his monkey with the 6D and 50mm f/1.4. I took the behind the scenes shot with a 60D and 40mm f/2.8 pancake.

This is also the first image I've tried the VSCO film affects on and I think I like it. I was hesitant to try it out but so far I'm liking the results. This is one of the classic film effects but I don't recall which one.

i noticed a little creek at the bottom of a gulley while driving so i pulled over and snaped a few pics at the bottom. it was nice and quiet , all you could hear was water trickling.

Virtually all my shots are landscapes, so I should start balancing that off a bit with a portrait once in a while. Here's one of me and my smarter half, a little ways north of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, a few days ago. This shot was a group effort --- I set it up, another person clicked the shutter, and a third person operated the flashlight.

Here's my, what else but a shot of one of my grand kids, playing on the beach which looks like a muddy affair.

I attended a Beach Wedding couple years ago, and the boys obviously had enough of the all the hustle and bustle and decided to escape. They were unaware that it was an out going Tide...

Wally I really like the "long wait" shot a lot. It definitely tells a story! And the fact that there's a sailboat out in the distance makes us complete the dream in the boy's mind.

Thanks! I saw a tour guide doing this for his clients on an earlier night, and I thought I'd give it a try. It took several trials and errors, but fortunately the aurora was long lasting and we had the time to play. I returned the favour to the people who helped me out, by taking their pictures too. This is a very good time to travel to Yellowknife, since the lakes aren't frozen yet and the aurora is quite active. Another good time would be March/April next year... but bring your woolies!

Ha....I remember your post last March...I think September is the best time to go.... For night photography, do you usually use the 24 f/1.4 II or can you get by with other lenses? I've tried it a couple of times and haven't been too happy yet.

Part of the crazy weather that has been going on in the US, Wednesday was 96 F with humidity and today is expected to be 70 F and dry. In the transition we picked up 3.5 inches of rain and had a number of thunderstorms roll through....granted, nothing like what Colorado has seen...

Hey Brant -- great lightning shots! I rented the 14 mm f/2.8 last March and used it a bit alongside the 24 f/1.4. It worked well and it's definitely on my long-term wish list. I liked the fact that it doesn't warp the horizon when you tilt it up, like some other ultra-wide angle lenses do. The 24 f/1.4 is great at f/2.0 but you'll get noticeable coma wide open at the corners (on a full-frame). The big advantage is faster shutter speeds for aurora (which can move pretty fast). But for straightforward star photos, you can probably do perfectly well with a 16-35 zoom lens at f/2.8, or something equivalent.

Today I got out of bed way too early for a Sunday and left home at 5.30 a.m. for some dawn shooting. The results were rather poor but I had a good time and got a few keepers. I like this one and decided to post it to this week's landscape category - I think it kind of describes the upcoming autumn mood. (I only wish they had used another rope.)
