Is it just the camera angle or is that horse quite, um, emaciated? His ribcage looks to be fully visible with a serious lack of meat on his haunches. Or maybe it's just the shadows.

You are right M Six, he is rather thin and he is little drawn at the withers and loin, he seems to move very well and gets up some speed along the main street and they do rest him in the shade, you have a keen eye for noticing considering my focusing and DOF.

@Steve, nice shot ... Agree the head looks like a Clydesdale, but the body frame (skinny as it is) doesn't, so he's probably a mix. Maybe a Shire/Clydesdale mix

The snow has mostly melted over the last couple of weeks, and today is a nice sunny day. I like the snow and usually enjoy winter, but I am not missing it to much this year... winter last year was just way to long, and I am ready for a short one. But am sure we will get hit soon.

will have to read up how to make the black 'pop' more

This is the easiest thing you can do make B+W pictures look better:
If you shoot RAW, you can do it in DPP easily, otherwise you can do it in PS/GIMP.
Looking at a histogram with level curves, take the 'black point' up to the left side of the histogram, and take the 'white point' down to somewhere near the right side of the histogram. That way, your images is using the full range of greyscale available, from fully black, through every grey, to fully white, rather than just looking all grey and washed out.

(man, this is hard to explain without the aid of screenshots).
And normally a simple straight line on the curve doesn't look the best, try playing with the curve a bit until it looks good...

Kombi
03-16-2012, 08:24 AM
Thanks for the input- I am shooting RAW, but at this point post processing is a completely foreign concept to me. Some minor tweaks in Picassa, but I didn't even realize I had DPP until I was reading about it here in the forums. I tried doing what I think you said.. but lol well.. once I better familiarize myself with DPP I'll have to revisit the suggestions.
When I get back next week I'll start a new thread so as to not clutter the images in this thread.

Thats great Steve!

I have only seen one of these birds before and it was in an aviary in a small town near where I went to school. I remember there being a little kid trying to make the call of the bird and eventually the real thing let out its characteristic call. Very neat little critter.

Just curious, are most people taking picture on Camera in B&W or converting in post?

I do all mine in post and use Nik, I find it very user friendly.

I'm trying to steer away from doing too much in B&W though, I found I was ignoring colours when out shooting.

I'm still steering towards a bit of B&W.
Here is a busker down at Wellington Point. He was pretty cool, name a song, or an artist and he would start singing.

Went to a local heritage site this weekend (Fort Edmonton Park), thought I'd come out with a bunch of pictures suitable for black and white, however Rain kept the 'interpreters' (period costumed staff) inside. So ended up taking pictures of my nieces for 90% of the shots.

Anyway here is a shot I dashed outside to get while no one was in the way and the rain paused..

Unfortunately I wasn't paying enough attention and severely overexposed it.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-YLj0S_bMuA0/T_SRCss2gcI/AAAAAAAAC3Q/wcKNZ0NOcpI/s640/IMG_8841-og.jpg
ISO: 100
Exposure: 1/15 sec
Aperture: 4.5
Focal Length: 10mm

Instead of deleting it I decided to see what I could do with it.
and here is the result

Thank you, Yes I now have camera set to just RAW.

Only the one shot before others dashed between buildings :)

I played with my free software goodies to see what I could do.

I took it into DPP adjusted brightness down, minimized highlights, maximized shadows. But picture still was washed out.
From there I went into picasa, straightend it slightly, changed to B+W - still kinda dull clicked edit in picnik (think it's for kids, you can add fake beards, tiaras, crowns, misc clip art, speech bubbles, etc..)
Brought the black back into the picture and added some contrast, then back to picasa to add the vignette.

Sure Steve, that sounds good. I do have this one test shot of this new CPL that I was trying out, but I'm not sure if she's a keeper or not?

CPL's can be a little tricky Rich, I think a number of tests would be a good investment towards better IQ in the long term.
Exposure can be a very subjective thing, to my eye, this looks pretty good, specially in consideration of the environment.

Having just viewed the Lightbox example, I see what you mean.
While your images of birds on poles are truly captivating and good tools to evaluate tele lenses, my personal interests probably lean more towards your example above.
I'll add some more shots from the weekend.

This happened to me a couple times. They are taking a delayed honeymoon but did go away for a couple days. They were on their way back early last week when she emailed me that they were excited to see them & would look at them when they got home and let me know which photos to order for their package by the end of last week. A windy day at Cleveland point. I usually go against it, but this time i went with the grain.

@Dave, great tone and texture in that garden shot mate, nice contrast.
@Edd, some of the programs allow you to slip in a gradutaed filter in the post processing, that may just cancel out the blown out lights in this one Edd, because they tend to detract a little from the building. But I do like the leading lines that the lights form and take the viewers eye into the shot.

Interesting shapes, Pat. I've seen this before in the Antarctic. According to my notes, the small balls are called "shuga" and the large chunks are known as "pancakes". Apparently, they go with the floe (thought I'd get the pun in before Steve):)

You suspect well for the second image, but somehow the other colors weren't so great. I prefer the B&W version by far.

I did my yearly visit to the Buckley Old Engine Show. It is one of my favorite things to do, and look forward to it every year (sad life, aye). I tried to make everything look vintage, but baseball hats kind of messes that up.

Here are a few from last week (if anyone has any comments on how to improve the B&W antique picture look, please comment... I have LR3 to process, but I do not have PS):
Edit: After posting, I see #2 could use some cropping... the horizon is too centered.

Joel:

Thanks for the feedback... it really is appreciated. And I totally agree with you.

I do not have Photo Shop (but will some day). My processing is through Light Room 3. They do not have textures or any presets for film grain in LR3, but I will look to see if I can find some to down load. I will check out the grain sliders to see if I can find a combination of settings that will do the trick. The grainy look is something I have to work on more because I think that will work better as long as I do not get to heavy handed with it.

Thanks.

Since I take the liberty to comment other's pictures, I might as well post some myself. Here are two from this summer. I tried to think B/W when I chose the motives, although they were quite nice in colour as well.

Feedback is wellcomed.

I'll post another B&W landscape here, since it had some success on Flickr.

One of the most impressive mountain in the Mont Blanc massif, the Grandes Jorasses (4208m). The north face of this mountain is the most famous, but the east face isn't bad either.

I couldn't post more than a few pictures lately, mainly because the weather has been so bad that's it was even difficult to go out for a short walk. In my region, we had up to 2.5 times the average amount of rain in July. In fact, the only thing that avoided terrible floods in the Alps was that it was cold enough for a lot of this rain to fall as snow on the top of the mountains.
Fortunately, we had a little break on the national Day, the 1st of August, with a somewhat clear weather. Well, at least it didn't rain for most of the day. I took advantage of this to go for a hike to see one of the famous "cabanes" (little cabins in the mountains for alpinists and climbers to spend the night before going higher the next day) in Switzerland, the "cabane d'Orny". Being usually built in very spectacular places, these cabins have become a goal on their own for a lot of less skilled people like me. For most of the day we were literally covered in fog, but we had a few moments when we could see a bit farther.
This mountain, the "Petit clocher du Portalet", is known as a little climber's paradise, as you can imagine from the picture. It emerged from the fog for about 2 minutes before disappearing again. I decided to convert the picture to B&W.

Tounis - Thanks for the effort and for sharing with use. The mist coming off the peak is a great catch and converting to B&W was a good choice.

Pierre, that is a stunning picture. I think BW conversion is perfect for this one. Glad to hear that you are able to get out and enjoy the sun!

The color version works nicely too, but I like the black and white.

I'm primarily going for an abstract and geometric type of effect here -- this is a light fixture from Stronghold Castle in Oregon, IL.

Lots of comments about black and white, but not many images posted!

I took this one about a month ago. It has a split tone effect applied, highlights are yellow and shadows are blue.

Nice to see other folks' work. Some great shots in there! For this one the layer transparency was turned down as the scene naturally had a split toning effect going on that I didn't want to lose entirely.

Cool pic, there's a nice natural texture working here.
