Hi all,

I'm interested in getting the tripod mount for my beloved 70-200 f4 IS. Unfortunately, it's damn expensive for what it is. Are there any reasonable third party alternatives?

Thanks,

Tony

I heard good things about Opteka tripod mounts, not sure if they make them for f4 IS, but they're supposed to be reliable and cost only 1/4-1/3 of the Canon's price.

Good luck

Take a metalworking glass at the local City College and construct your own

Ebay have loads on for around £5 upwards. I bought a cheap one. Its not quite as firm fit as the canon but it does the job.

This seems to be one of the alternatives: Opteka Tripod Collar ("http://www.amazon.com/Opteka-Tripod-Collar-70-200mm-Lenses/dp/B001D07YUK/ref=pd_cp_e_0?pf_rd_p=413863501&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00009XVAG&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIK X0DER&pf_rd_r=1RSDG6W3NT2WSZFG759W)

I use the 70-200/4L IS with a genuine Canon tripod collar. It locks the lens pretty solid and it gives me a good sense of security when used on anything (lock solid on tripod head vs rotate frequently on my monopod). I personally haven't tried any 3rd party rings, they may turns out to be as usable but once if something goes wrong you're putting your lens along with the camera body at risk. The tripod ring is rather delicate so you may want to get one with good strength.
