P&S recommendation for 12 yr. old?

At the last few family gatherings my niece has followed me around just watching me.


This past wkend she expressed an interest in taking pics....so I'm wondering what would be a good beginner's P&S.......thoughts?

Is it going to be a Canon or doesn't matter?

My brother (12 years) is using the Canon SD1100 IS. In fact, I was using one until my parents got their Xti. It's a pretty cool camera - Does what it's supposed to, and has some pretty cool features, like Photostitch, which helps when making panoramas. They recently discontinued the SD1100 and B&H is now selling the SD1200 IS. Check it out.


At $200, it might be just a bit out of your price range, though.

Oops I was going to say Powershot D10 because it's waterproof, dust resistant and can handle a shock or two (seeing as this will be in the hands of a kid). But that is nearly twice the price. So that is no option I guess? I think something like that would rock for a 12 year old.

Going back to alex's post, if the SD1200 IS is out of the price range, you ought to be able to find a SD1100 IS on ebay from a legit seller for less. I know that kind of goes without saying but I said it anyways.

Haha my best friend has a Nikon.. we have alot of brand superiority discussions and whenever someone comes to either of us with questions on what gear to buy, they get completely different answers.
