Really Right Stuff or Kirk Enterprises L-plate for 40D and 50D without grips?

The RRS looks nice, but I have a couple of Kirk QR mounts for the two heads I'm using, and the Kirk looks fine, too. The RRS seems to be intended to be adjusted depending upon whether you are using a Canon release or not, allowing a lower side profile if you aren't using the remote release. The Kirk will work with the release without moving the mount, but it seems like the side is thicker to accomodate, and I'm not sure I'd like that. They are both the same price. Which one should I get?

can't say much about the kirk, but as for RRS , for having one on my 5d2 its sturdy and work very well.and its nyce to be able to use the release if i need to. hope you be happy with wenever choice you made.

I haven't used the kirk, But I love the RRS. High quality, good finish, smooth edges, rock sold mount (No Sliding) and you can get to the remote connection without removing the l plate.

I've used RRS grip-less L-plates on three bodies, now (Rebel XT, 40D, and 5DII), and I've loved having them on my cameras. I actually like the adjustability for the remote release. It's pretty easy to use, as long as you remember the allen wrench in your bag! The only issue, if you can even call it that, is that you have to push the rubber port covers out of the way within the cutout at the end of the plate. Other than that necessary bit of fiddling, the RRS L-plates work great, with and without remote release.

I have been giving this some more thought, including whether or not I should hold off for another body before I buy any plate, and I think for now I am going to hang onto my 40D and go with the RRS L-plate.

For what it's worth (more future reference than your current situation, I suppose), if you're ever looking for a universal plate, the Wimberly P-5 does a pretty nice job. I needed a plate for my 5DII before the RRS L-plate was released, so I ordered one (the person I spoke with at Wimberly was great, by the way, as have been the folks I've dealt with at RRS). It's not an L-plate, but it's relatively inexpensive and might be able to patch a between-cameras/L-plates gap.
