UV Filters...... are they really useful???
UV Filters..... aside from the fact that they offer some sort of protection from scratches and are a requirement for some lens to complete the wtaer sealing..... Do we really get better pictures when we use them??? [presuming of course every other aspect of the shot was done right] Does it really cut glare???
Re: UV Filters...... are they really useful???
Not with a dSLR, no. Film is sensitive to UV wavelengths, but digital camera sensors are not. When used on a dSLR lens, a UV filter is equivalent to a clear protection filter. However, UV filters of the same diameter are often slightly cheaper (supply and demand and also somewhat due to production costs), and they are also more available - so they're more commonly used than clear filters for those reasons, but not due to image capture.
It is important to note that while a UV filter does not make pictures better, it can make them worse - so if you're going to use them, use high quality ones (B+W MRC, the high end of the Hoya line).
Personally, I use B+W MRC UV filters on all my lenses. In addition to added protection, a filter is easier to clean than the lens, and if you inadvertently leave a dust spec on there when you rub, a scratch costs you filter and not a front element.

oh so UV filters are more in the line of protection rather than better picture quality...
yes I use B+W they are quite expensive [ thats why I am asking.... hehehe:] compared to the tons of cheap stuff out there but like you said filters don
