Didn't get the 24-105 nor the 17-55
In relation to my post "Please share your thoughts on this: 1000D to 2nd-hand 50D", I was pondering in getting the 24-105 until the 17-55 suggestion came up. I've gone crazy over the past few days on which one to get. I just want to thank everyone for their input in helping me out pick the lens that I would get. After considering Daniel, Braden, Jan, John, and David's suggestions and alternative options, I swallowed my pride and got myself a Sigma 17-50 2.8 to upgrade my defective kit lens (AF broke down and been using it for awhile in manual focus mode) and also got the Canon 85mm 1.8 (to fill-in my hunger for extra reach and for portraiture sessions).
Passed up in getting the 50D too and retained my bond with my beloved 1000D/XS body. The Sigma 17-50 seems to par with Canon's 17-55 in reviews and it's about a third cheaper though 5mm shorter which I think is quite insignificant. I just got the two lens tonight and I can't wait to test and try it on in actual shooting tomorrow. [:)]
By the way, I still got some change on my budget for initially planning to get the 24-105, and also got myself a better camera bag -- Lowepro's Fastpack 200.
Thank you again everyone for all the input and suggestions.

Sounds like you got a lot for your money, AnGelo. I hope that you get a lot of enjoyment out of your new toys! I am still after an 85 1.8. So post some shots to make me jealous.
Cheers,
Dave.

You're probably not in Italy — I've got an 85 f/1.8 that I really loved for portraits on the 500D, but, since upgrading to FF, I have few uses for it ... and am pondering a 135 f/2.
Anyhow, happy shooting — getting two lenses instead of one must mean twice the fun (?) ;-)
Ciao, Colin

Exciting! Breaking in new lenses is always so much fun.

Indeed! It sounds like a good decision! I've got the Fastpack 350 I think and I really like it [Y] I'm prettu sure the Fastpack 200 is pretty similar.
I hope you'll enjoy your new gear. Please show us some results when you are used to them. I'm actually pretty interested to see how the Sigma works. And the 85mm is a lens on my wish list as well [;)]
Have fun Angelo!

Hi Dave, I indeed did get a lot from what I've initially planned to do with the cash I had... [:)] And I think it's a good decision that I have made. I'll be posting some photos as soon as I can get them out of RAW conversion and stuff.

Hi Colin! Movin' to FF really changes the FOV and the 85mm on a crop body is similar to having the 135mm on a FF, right? [:)]

This is indeed fun but I had only the chance to break-in the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 today. I have to try and check out the 85mm on a different occasion.

Thanks Jan! Yep, I do love my Fastpack 200! I was able to stow away my gear in a very decent package. [:)] I was able to break-in the Sigma today and will be posting some photos soon.

Nice thing: you really don't have to crop much afterwards! I do have to back up some inside to get a particular shot sometimes, but that's okay. What I've heard about the 50 1.4's focusing makes me happy I got the 85/1.8. Looking forward to using it for more outdoor events once the weather gets nice!
