Tried 1.4x extender III, sending it back
I bought the 1.4x III a week ago to give it a try. While it seems that at stationary objects it may do as well, and only a hair slightly better than 1.4x II, it is not enough of a difference to matter or really even noticeable.
However, on BIF it performed sadly. I have taken it out three times now just to make sure it wasn

Rick, thanks for the first hand information . it certainly makes me happy with the TC II.
how about the speed of the AF, does it track and lock the object easier and faster?

I'll do the same thing if I were you.

There was no noticable diffrence in this respect.

I've read on Canon's website that these new extenders are designed for use with the new MII lenses (300 to 600 prime MII) and as such I'm not sure if anyone would notice any difference on a non-MII lens.
Edit:
As taken from Canon's website...

"Extenders EF 1.4X III and EF 2X III have been newly developed in conjunction with the new Series II Image Stabilizer EF super-telephoto lenses. They can also be used with all previously announced extender-compatible EF lenses, but maximum performance is achieved when they are used with the new 300mm, 400mm, 500mm and 600mm lenses."

I didn't expect a huge bump in Image Quality with the new extender, although the charts show there might be a little. I expected it to perform at least as well as the 1.4x II with the 500mm F4L, but it didn't.
I bought it because I intend to upgrade to the new II series lenses, but it appears I should have just waited.

yes, that's why I'v said it's too early to call since all the tests Bryan has made were with those non version III lenses, if the results are good with the new lenses(I mean really good), then the crazy prices will not seem that crazy because we are talking about some really nice 700mm-1200mm f5.6-8 lenses, if you are not sure, think how much the 1200mm 5.6L will cost you?

Either one of the extenders would be considered sluggish if you have never used one. I think that if you wanted to buy it for the 70-200mm F2.8L II the 1.4x III might be the better choice since both are new technology. I have read alot of good things about that combination.
However, for me I could care less about putting an extender on my 70-200mm F2.8L II. I am getting the RMA from B&H and shipping it back today, until the II series tele's come out then I will rebuy one.
