First lets compare their control details.


The 24-105mm is fairly detailed. It has fake screws, fake switches, an actual window. Aside from slight text placement changes, and the missing red mounting dot, it looks quite real.

The 70-200mm lacks any details. The focus distance windows is a bubbly sticker than was peeling off when it arrived. You would never mistake this for a lens.

The 24-105mm lens cap looks genuine.

The 24-105mm cap however is fairly thin, making it hard to grasp. It's also significantly enough narrower than the cup's lip to make taking it off a royal pain. It lacks a "weather seal" to keep your drink safely inside.

The 70-200mm cap is bulky and easy to remove. The "weather seal" will help keep your drink inside. The sliding sipping window however has no resistance or seal, and just flops about, helping to keep your drink outside.

The caps are a different diameter, and cannot be swapped. The 70-200mm is 14oz, while the 24-105mm is 11oz, and also available in a lens hood version. Neither cup is compatible with an extender to increase volume.

It would seem to me that the the 24-105 would be better suited to use at outdoor weddings, or gatherings where alcohol is served.


While the 70-200 would better for sporting events or outdoor adventures where you would take water or some other type of refreshing drink.


But I may be wrong and someone can correct me if they know better.

The 24-105 does come in another configuration, with a larger hood/cap. That is the one that I bought and it is very easy to drink out of. I wanted the 70-200 but they had none, so I bought what I could at the time.


Having lived with the 24-105 for a few weeks, I have found it suits my coffee style better. I drink either a flat white or a machiato, both drinks suited to a smaller container for a stronger caffeine hit. It has become my travel mug of choice.


But I see where Rick is coming from and there could be time where a larger volume beverage is what is needed.

I have the 24-105 and i must say the build quality is excellent, weather sealing is an issue, but i mainly drink in the office so its ok.


BEWARE, there are cheap copies out there, i got mine from HongKong on ebay and it genuine, but they did alert me to the black market copies, not sure if Canon know about these, I have informed trading standards, i dont think the copies have the flourite coating, which makes coffee stains more prevalent and harder to remove
