Dear Photographers with Canon lenses - about Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM II compared to Canon EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM?
Dear Photographers with Canon lenses - about Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM II compared to Canon EF 70-200 f/4L IS USM?
I purchased both lenses but I am quite sad to say that my expectations for the performance in IQ with the new 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM II-version COMPARED with my excellent 4L IS USM is in experience a great disappointment to me!
Is it possible that my lens is so called "soft" one?
I find it hard to get sharpness. Has anyone here on this excellent forum experiencing this kind of disappointment.
I read somewhere on Internet that the 4L IS USM version has one FLOURITE lens element! Is that really true? and that I could not find that the version II of the 2.8L IS USM had one?
Last week I went to the Canon service with my lens and told them that I can not achieve true sharpness with the lens. So I have to wait if they will find anything wrong with this one - but for me - I find my self not really trusting Canon well known quality anymore - should not we expect perfect items when we buy a new lens?
I would very much appreciate your experiences in comparison between these two lenses above!

Charl

I used to own the Canon 70-200mm f/4L IS and it was sharp as a tack. I really was a fantastic lens.
I bought the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II as I needed the extra stop (i.e. f/4 vs f/2.8). My experience so far has been that the f/2.8L IS II is as sharp at f/2.8 as the f/4L IS was at f/4. Stopped down to f/4 it is much sharper again. I really enjoy using the new f/2.8L IS II.
It is possible that you

The 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II should be very sharp - slightly sharper than the excellent 70-200mmm f/4L IS. Assuming you're using autofocus, most likely you need to perform an AF micro adjustment on the 70-200mm f/2.L IS II (hopefully, your body has that capability!).

The 70-200mm f/4L IS has one fluorite and two ultra-low dispersion (UD) elements. The 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II has one fluorite and five UD elements.

Thank you so very much sir btaylor for your very good answers!
Yes that could be the case because I was expecting this later version to be the top-of-line lens in its own category! So now when the lens is - hopefully in good hands for checking the alignment of the lens elements and also the focus accurateness - I am in some hopefully anticipation to be helped! Thank you once again!
This forum is really nice!
