I would recommend at least a 50D since you may need the AF microadjust feature that starts with the 50D model. The 40D is a great body, but if it is not in complete sync with you 50mm f/1.4 any OOF will be very noticeable with that shallow depth of field. I realize it is @ twice your stated budget, but it may be worth it in saved aggravation.

Not quite twice. Ebay was running $500-550 for the 50d. The 50mm is sometimes hit and miss reguardless:)
