Aliasing problems....help please?

Hi everyone. Need some help please.

I noticed the other day a funny thing: I exported a version of a .CR2 file (picture of bare tree branches against the post-sunset sky) from LR3 to a folder on my desktop that I use for my Wallpapers. Upon display, I noticed "jaggies" along the edges of the tree branches. I exported in 100% quality JPEG (aroung 7 MB I think). I tried several version, first changing the output dpi, then zeroing the sharpening in the "Detail" panel, exporting TIF (no compression). Nothing seemed to help. The weird thing was, that when I used Windows Media Viewer (or whatever its called) to view the pic (jpeg), there were no jaggies (even zooming waaaay in) - only when I display to the desktop.

Any help would be appreciated.

That's probably your problem. The software that Windows uses to display images on the desktop does a very poor job of resizing images. First use a good resizing program (or at least a mediocre one, like Lightroom) to resize the image down to the size of your desktop. Then set the resized image as your desktop background.

I thought he said he did resize it in LR..? Anyway, if you did, make sure and go through the rest of the panel and see if something was accidentally checked on.

Well, maybe I didn't because I don't really specify what dimension I want - just "100% Jpeg" and 300 dpi.....I'll fiddle around some more tonight....after the child decides she wants to sleep :p

Right on. How many stops are you getting at each end? Do you mainly shoot "Faithful"?

I haven't measured yet, but my feeling is that it's at least three stops more highlight headroom than on my 5D2.

I shoot "Neutral", slightly customized, but it only affects the video clips since I don't use Nikon conversion software.

Thanks Daniel and andnowimbroke. I resized in LR to match my screen pixel dimensions, exported as 100% jpeg and the jaggies are gone. LEarn something every day :)
