Canon Speedlite 430EX II, version I is another good choice, if you can find it.
Elaborate more on what kind of events you're shooting. The 580EX II can show some significant advantages over the 430s if recycle time is an issue, and the 430 can be limiting if you do much vertical ("portrait orientation") shooting of subjects lower than you and you like bounce flash.
I say go 580EX II. If you can wait for the rebates to come back around it will only be $100 or so more.
Besides being more powerful and all the obvious reasons, my biggest reason...I've dropped both. 580EX II = Fine. 430EX = Pieces. :(
