I believe that it's an "optical illusion". I believe the coin is very shiny and is just reflecting the black material he used for the photo. I could be wrong though and am interested to read what others think as well.
James is correct. "Proof" coins are extremely reflective - mirror-like. The shots were very simple to take. The coin is sitting (angled toward me) on black velor fabric. A speedlite fired into a small softbox provided the light. Reflections of darkness took care of the rest.
