Another Nikon Camera Issue?!?

Good God, can they release a camera that doesn't have a quality issue? I'm far from a Canon fanboy, but let's see:

D600 - Oil spot issue
D800 - Autofocus issue
D750 - Flare issue

My Canon 6D has an archaic autofocus system, but I knew that going in. At least there are no major issues with the camera and it does what it is designed to do.

Nikon is using a great sensor, but can't seem to design a body to put it in that doesn't have quality issues.

My first 5D II mirror broke and canon replaced it under warranty. The second developed a half dozen dead pixels at about 1.5 years. The third never downloads the last picture taken, until you take more pics then it will download it as the first pic of the next series.
I went through 4 - 24-70 II's before I found a keeper. I am still waiting on the 36mp 1Ds IV that was rumored. My 16-35mm can't withstand being dropped 4' without breaking.

On a side note I am debating, would the 5D III be a better wildlife camera (not BIF) than the 1D x. I am upgrading lenses to.

And the measure of a company IMO is do they stand behind their products. I am not sure how Nikon arrived at this point but it looks like they are passing the stand behind their product test.

And it took me 9 copies of the 24-70II to find one that I felt was good enough. Most of the issue was the "clicking" sound when operating the zoom lens (btw, this is quiet compared to a couple that I received). And, of course, Nikon fanboys will point to the light leak issue with the Canon 5DIII. But, those are my only issue(s) with Canon. Otherwise, they have been remarkable, IMO.

I had a similar response to Dave when I saw that news link. Kind of a "here we go again" feel. Granted, we do not really know how significant of an issue this is.

I evaluated going with the D800 when I upgraded to the 5DIII. This was before any of the issues Dave mentioned. But I remember being concerned with the Lensrental data on average repair cost (Nikon is the highest; granted, Canon was 4th from the top) and days needed by Nikon to make a repair (Nikon was the second highest at 24 days, Canon at 5 days). Just sayin, in terms of standing behind their gear, if I was a working photography professional, combining that with the issues with the latest releases would give me at least some pause.

Yes, but then once you see the superior DR all of these other issues are so insignificant that they are not worth mentioning.:rolleyes:

I like fishing off the back of a boat, but with group on this forum no one takes the bait. The best fishing is under bridges.

Still, I am debating, I sold my 300mm f/2.8. Should I replace it with the new version or go a different direction and buy a Zeiss 55mm Otus.

Rick...seems like the perfect time for you to jump ship and go Sony......or, better yet, Samsung....

Someday, mirrorless will be so good that cameras with mirrors will stop working.....;)

I don't own any of the real high end Canon equipment, but of the cameras and lenses I've had there haven't been any that have had a manufacturing or durability issue. I haven't had to send anything to Canon to be repaired.

Maybe I'm lucky or terribly non-perceptive!

Get the Otus. You can always stack three 2X-III's (may need to put a extension tubes between them). Then you could cover the 55-330 mm range with some great glass. You will not be able to AF, but you were going to buy an Otus without AF anyway... so AF was not an important consideration. As for the loss of a half a dozen stops of light - You do not have to worry about that with all the DR and high ISO performance you will be getting out of that new camera of yours.

For a summary, you can look at post #58 in this thread. Half the issues where with the clicking while zooming issue. Which is too bad, as I tested a couple of those lenses and they were optically excellent.

I have never found reason to have issue with another Canon product. Overall, I am very happy with their quality. And I am really enjoying the 24-70II.

Brilliant...a 55 mm f/1.4 lens.....or....a 330 mm f/11.....

I think you are covered......

But, get it in a Nikon mount......it'll have better low ISO noise.

I am going to wait on buying a new body and believe the rumor of the day. Wait for the new 52mp 5D IV.

With almost twice the pixels of other bodies Canon makes. Of course it will be twice as sharp. Pair it with the Otus and it will be so sharp it cuts your eye looking through the view finder.
